Arte is a german-french collaboration (every 20th century brits nightmare). And this one was clearly aired in France, hence all the french subtitles.

Her German's really good. Certainly puts mine to shame. I can't even speak French at all, although I'd like to learn it.

I am spanish, when we want to write a laugh, instead of writing "hahaha" we do write "jajaja". That tends to confuse people, but i keep forgetting that.

I think Butler is a real hero; a profound thinker. Her work has certainly helped me develop my understanding of the world. Isn't there a strange irony in her response to the young woman in the 'no pants' demo? Odd how the pants is historically so gender specific and how uncomfortable Butler seems in the young woman's presence.

no she's just arguing that if a person is given their gender based on their sexuality then a lesbian is not in fact a woman. what constitutes being a 'woman' isn't something you feel, it's a lived experience which is fluid and in constantly in flux. plus, i do not like the use of the word 'normal'. it's loaded with assumptions and never holds a place in social theory. i think butler's arguments surrounding sex as much a social construction as gender is interesting and worth thought.

i like judith but this doc was a real snooze lol. also it needed subtitles
@ryanjavierortega85137 жыл бұрын
feeltheillinois I grateful that it exists, but the doc on Derrida, Bloom, and The Examined Life doc all share the same problems,in that they seem unable to decide whether they are works of Cinema or Encyclopedia entries.... I mean, the tremendous documentary that could be made of Paul de Man and the National reaction to Yale (as well as Cornell, Hopkins, and, later and to a lesser extant, Irvine) and the manner of pedagogy employed in such a citadel, would be amazing! Right now, the ramifications are being felt, as those whom have obtained educations at such institutions during the period Theory came to America are now running Academic Institutions of high standing, ranking-wise, and, because of General Requirements, the manner of thinking that de Man brought into fashion is responsible for altering the way in which we all (both those who agree and disagree) think. I mean, everywhere I go, all I hear is talk, talk, talk about Marxism.

@SToyaholic gud language is just anuva jargon. if u put ur words in the least winning form possible then u make any sense in dem shine thru like a beacon. quotin Rabelais, "It was upbraided to Demosthenes by an envious surly knave, that his Orations did smell like the sarpler or wrapper of a foul and filthy oil-vessel." its about honesty. if u dress everyfing up fancy wiv jargon people will think they understand and agree wen theres nuthing there at all.

@newfan7 You mean she has "trouble" with her sexuality? Or trouble with her gender?? :) Actualy yes, because that is the whole point: not being regulated by the compulsive heterosexuality and refuzing its regulative power WILL get one in trouble, But the goal should be to create cultural and linguistic enviroment where ownsexuality will not get one in trouble.

what is with this music over her "Jewish background" part? perhaps a French understanding of being Jewish? It's not that I'm offended, but it's kind of unnecessary.
@Spriggan8315 жыл бұрын
Yeah..well i don't exactly see documentaries which are about say Christian(Roman Catholic/Protestant/ etc.) subjects like myself and having to point out and depict their own personal faith and justifying points regarding faith. I find this totally unnecessary. Stop using the Religion card. You're not getting any extra points for being a Jew, Muslim, Christian, or what not.

@Underground906 I was going to comment on the body dysmorphia too. Do you think she goes with the "ambiguous" look to prove a point in what she "believes" or "teaches" or do you think it's an act and she just doesn't want to come out as transgender and make everything she preaches a sham? :)
@shackleton1214 жыл бұрын
@newfan7 the point iz gender is a intelectul idea. u have a problem with butlers sexuality, she cant, her sexuality is herself - ur anxious she isnt normative values r nonsense 4 fascist ideologues

This is a tremendously boring docco, I couldn't watch past this segment. If you can't say anything interesting 20 minutes in, you're doing something wrong. Maybe the french dialogue had some substance.
