This movie does have one of my all time favorite unironic Stephen Seagal tough guy lines. When that one guy (who he straight up murders at 11:00) says he can't shoot all of them, he says, "Maybe not, but I'll get an A for effort." I have no idea why, but I absolutely love that line.

Is this the only Seagal movie where he actually takes a beating? You know, that narrative device used in all good action films because it exposes the protagonist's vulnerabilities and makes their eventual triumph more meaningful?

It is fascinating how their early films had a similar aesthetic and ideology... though I like the fact that JCVD is willing to have his character beat up in his films- it makes the triumph all the more satisfying. Seagal playing someone who is nigh invincible in universe gets a bit boring after a while.

14:23 I’ve watched a lot of Seagal’s early films and I think this is the only time his character got hit and the vibe wasn’t, “I let him hit me so that I could shrug it off and show what a badass I am.” Makes we wonder if Seagal actually did get hit in this scene and it rocked his world so badly that he decided, “that’s it!! No one is ever allowed to hit me in one of my movies EVER again!”

A great 80's flick! Seagal started out of the gate in the genre stronger than Stallone, Arnold and Van Damme with Above the Law, Marked for Death Out for Justice and Under Siege. All headlining actioners, without needing any smaller roles in other gigs. Sad he just didn't have that longevity of the others and tapered to the straight-to-video section so quickly.

If Seagal wasn't such an all-purpose tool, his run would be kind of endearing. He's like an eggbeater with legs! 10:50 - Wait, did that portly guy just call Seagal "Fatass"? Maybe he had a time machine? Pam Grier is awesome in any decade - I remember she was on "Knots Landing" (cheesy '80s nighttime soap) - still awesome.

It has be said. We can fill a pre-internet phonebook with jokes about Steven Seagal, but he was a huge breath of fresh air when he first entered the action scene. The only other martial arts movie actor i can think of who was known for horribly maiming and killing his opponents was Sonny Chiba.

Trivia: The man responsible for Seagal's big break was agent and businessman Michael Ovitz who was his Aikido student. Ovitz was well-connected and got Seagal gigs like making television appearances, providing martial arts training for movie stars, then eventually this starring role. Ovitz also knew ex-special forces and CIA guys, which during film production Seagal was able to hangout with. So when Seagal did interviews to promote this movie, he took the stories of these special forces guy and passed it at his own. He even overly exaggerated them. One of his claims is that before being involved in movies, he was actually part of the team that extracted the Shah of Iran and his family to London and Paris. It was all over the papers. Fortunately for Seagal, the internet practically did not exist yet at the time. Seagal would have a falling out with Ovitz, and he would sell his ass out later on

The skinny Seagal voice was great so don't worry about it.

Then a few years later, the director, Andrew Davis, reworked the script a little, brought back a lot of the same actors, used the same music, hired Chuck Norris, and made a movie called Code of Silence.

Code of Silence was decent, but it didn't hit nearly as hard as Above The Law. Chuck -- in my opinion -- does better with more black-and-white hero/villain roles, as a clean-cut hero taking on clear-cut bad guys. Firewalker is still one of my all-time favourite adventure films because Chuck was made for stuff like that... oh, and Invasion USA, which is still my opinion his best film, along with Delta Force 2.

@@Billy-bc8pk My favorites from Chuck are The Octagon, A Force of One, and Lone Wolf McQuade. I'd throw Code of Silence in there as well. I haven't seen Delta Force 2 since it first came to home video. If I remember correctly it was the 90s and there was also a laserdisc release of the movie along with VHS.

@@batman.darthmaul I don't think I've actually seen A Force Of One? I will need to check that out. You're right that The OCtagon and Lone Wolf McQuade are definitely two awesome films. And yeah, Delta Force 2 was a favourite of mine on VHS, used to rewatch it a lot back in the day. Well paced, awesome fight scenes, and great action framing, especially the third act.

@@Billy-bc8pk Back in the day when The Octagon was in theaters, A Force of One usually played before it. I actually saw it at a drive-in.

@@Billy-bc8pk Oh, and don't expect A Force of One to be as good as Lone Wolf or Octagon. It's not, but I still really like it. I think it's the movie he did after Good Guys Wear Black.
