Redfern Station was transformed when the new southern aerial concourse and 2 new entrances opened on Sunday 8th October 2023.
And it was quite an occasion with NSW premier Chris Minns and NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen officially opening these new bits!
I start with the new entrance on Little Eveleigh Street which has been built within a heritage warehouse building that is almost 100 years old.
I'll then give you a tour of the new Southern Aerial Concourse and explain some of the architectural and design features used.
You'll then see the new stairways and 6 new lifts, along with a special skyway that goes to the lift and stairs for platforms 8&9.
I'll then finish with a tour of the Marian Street entrance, and talk about future plans for lifts to platforms 11 & 12.
Within this video are short chats with phil‪@sydneytrainsvlogs‬, Sharath‪@BuildingBeautifully‬, Elliot‪@tsetstransport‬, and Matthew at‪@AheadMatthewawsome‬.
And I also interviewed a couple of people within Novo Rail, who are the principal contractors for this Redfern Station Upgrade
Also included is some construction footage of the Little Eveleigh Street entrance, the Marian Street entrance and the New Southern Aerial Concourse.

Accuracy
I do my best to make the commentary in these videos as accurate as possible by checking facts on the internet and other sources. However, sometimes the information isn't available, so I'll use my railway knowledge and insight to explain something to the best of my ability. If accuracy is important, do check the comments, as other viewers will often pick up on things I've missed or any mistakes made. Also note that for older videos, things may change over time, causing some of the information to become out of date.
Construction Sites, Maintenance Facilities and other Private Property
All footage of construction sites, maintenance facilities and other private property is taken from a public vantage point. The only exception is if it's an open day or I have special permission to access the site. The iPhone's small lens and zoom function makes it easier to film through small gaps in hoardings or fencing, so it may look like I'm on site when I'm not! If you would like to know the exact filming location, then ask me in the comments.

The old southern footbridge, constructed in 1913 and used by thousands of Sydney Uni students and staff for so many years, was demolished in 1994, so it's been a long wait - but the new bridge is really impressive, with clever ways to overcome problems such as the narrow platforms. The incorporation of historic and indigenous elements is impressive, along with just greater utility for everyone.

ah yes! used that 1983-87 - very basic stairs, one lonely guard collecting tickets in the exit. It cut back the walking time by the lengthen of a platform.

My memory of that footbridge is using it to access Paddy's Market while Haymarket was being redeveloped.

Yes it was a different time back then, when rail travel was on the decline, and I'm sure if the Rail Renaissance has happened in the 1990s, then this would have come much sooner. I think the need to find solutions, such as the slimmer lifts and moving the heritage platform 1 building probably also took some time as well.

I ofcourse refer to Elliot, Matthew, Max, Phil, and Shareth. I must eat my words with this project as I have referred to it as "boxy and ugly" in previous videos on other channels and it is anything but. I was quite impressed with this new Redfern extension - that overpass pedestrian bridge is amazing. I bet there will be a lot more transpotters there now catching glimpses of vintage trains enroute to and from Central Station ( which I also gond impressive now that most if it is open - can't wait until the metro train line extension from Chatswood or wherever it is being extended to/from opens! The worse part of catching a train at Redfern Station before this bridge was built was transferring between the Eastern suburbs line platform to say Northern line platform and getting to Little Eveleigh Street to get to Carriageworks. Now it's a lot more pleasant a walk. I have yet to explore the other side of Redfern Station entrance/exit on Marion Street , I have only seen it from the outside back in Sept when it was not open to the public yet. I did not know about platform one buildings and structures. And I didn't know there were toilets. ❤ your video and how you spotted and interviewed other train spotting & town planning enthusiasts KZbinrs as well as construction staff - I watch some of their KZbin channels as well! This former brick warehouse building in the 1980s/early 1990s had a huge graffiti visible to the train tracks: "People who like people are the luckiest people in the world", a one lyric variation of the 1964 Barbra Streisand song, 'People', written by Bob Merrill ('like' instead of 'need'). Platform 11-12 is still left in the stone ages in the underground. Imagine having to move through platform 10 all the way up north and then turn around and walk again. Would've been nice if there were at least stairs connecting directly to 11-12.

Thinking of improvements at Redfern, I notice that between platform 10 and the underground platforms 11 & 12 there is essentially a "pit" which I presume is the unfinished space originally intended for 13 and 14. At the northern end of platform 11 you can see daylight peeking through between the boards forming the wall, and evidence of some greenery (weeds) growing there. It struck me that it would be a great thing to open up that space, which could be maintained as a small garden and allow air and natural light to flood in to 11 & 12 (at least at the northern end.) There could be a glass wall if too much fresh air would be a problem in winter... I am sure an architect could do something to turn that waste site into an amenity. Something for the powers-that-be to think about ...?

Hi Martin, yes I think that "pit" was for platforms 13 & 14. I totally agree. It would be lovely to open up platforms 11 & 12 to bring some natural light in. Let's see what happens over the next few years.

Going to Sydney University during the 1970s we walked between narrow walkways at track level then up to the footbridge ,crossing the other platforms and passing the ticket inspector who took delight in harressing the students who forgot their train pass. This footbridge also provided access to Eveleigh railway works for the thousands of workers

I honestly don't fully understand why, but since these are friends that don't know each other (in Australia and the US), and they've both said the same thing, it may be a pretty common view, and I'm sure you'll agree it takes little effort to speak about people who use wheelchairs in the way they prefer. Was there a reason as to why Transport For NSW failed to link the new bridge to Redfern platforms 11 & 12 (T4 Illawarra Line)? Since 1979, the T4 line has only been accessible via stairs and escalator from the Northern Concourse. This makes the T4 line an ongoing fire death trap as if a fire breaks out on the escalators or stairs, passengers on 11 & 12 have no method of escape, other than to possibly go into the train tunnels, risking life and limb by a train running the fleeing passengers down!

Hi Stephen, I didn't notice the lack of Opal top-up machines. I guess these can easily be added. Might be worth contacting Sydney Trains about this. As the Opal gates are right at the entrance, I guess these would need to be on the other side, and that may be the reason for the lack of them.

Redfern station is overrated. Commuters needing to make transfers are much better off doing so at either Central or Town Hall as this avoids the dreaded stairs on the northern end. This is especially true as Central station is now fully serviced with escalators and vertical lifts. This explains why commuters needing to make connections have traditionally overlooked Redfern.
@TransportVlog
@TransportVlog 8 ай бұрын
I don't think interchanges were the main reason for the upgrade. As Sydney's 5th busiest station, it needed more capacity and the new entrances and aerial concourse achieves that. Personally, I would continue to change at Central, especially to switch between the T2 and T1/T9, as its a cross platform connection. However, if you're coming from places like Sydenham, Hurstville etc, and want to go west to Strathfield, Parramatta etc, then it makes sense to change at Redfern.
@user-kc1tf7zm3b
@user-kc1tf7zm3b 8 ай бұрын
@@TransportVlog Yes, the much needed and deserved modernisation and expansion project of Redfern station is actually 20 years too late. However, as for commuters who do not live and work in the Redfern and Eveleigh areas, making train connections at Redfern is too bloody arduous as 2 sets of substantial stairs, up and down, have to be negotiated when making a connection. Making these connections at Central is far more easier. Moreover, a commuter is far more certain of securing a seat at Central, especially during the brutal evening peak hour. Again, this explains why many commuters ignore Redfern, even if this means they are travelling an extra stop. Switching platforms at Central is far more straightforward and easier as the subterranean stairs are more accessible. This is especially true for those needing to make a connection for the underground Eastern Suburbs, Illawarra and Cronulla Lines as there is less walking involved. Needless to say, there are a plethora of new and modern escalators and lifts at Central.
