New to your page. Great content. Can I ask why you didn’t use pea gravel before doing final fill of deck mud around drain? Isn’t that clogging up the weap holes and not letting water get through?

have you done these on a wooden subfloor? i dont see a problem on a concrete slab but on a wood slab im just not sure if the filled in divot mud would hold. after a few years its possible that mud in the divot area might loosen and what you might see is a circular crack in the tile. im almost thinking that after you fill in the divot, more fabric is needed on top to bridge the 2 muds together. this wont stop the divot mud from loosening because its on a wood sub floor, but perhaps stop it from cracking if it does

Would it be a good idea to put pebbles and before packing the mud? To prevent the deck mud from covering the weeping holes?

@@egformula with the waterproofing membrane why is there a concern with the weep holes? The weep holes will never have water coming in right? I thought you had to use a drain designed for membrane install such as wonder cap or flo fx or similar?
@egformula Жыл бұрын
@@chadr00 well let's say a Grout joint goes bad or tile cracks or whatever over the surface, then water will go down to the waterproofing and slide down to the weep holes.

Awesome idea. I already did pre-slope, pan liner, and final mud slap. Then I did a water test and my mud pack was wet for almost 4 days until fully dry( I live in AZ in a dry climate). Which I hated. Watched your video, and now I will take off a little bit around the drain and will do the same as you did, that way my mud will be fully dry. Im not worrying about the moisture sandwich as water should not even get there to the layer where I have the pan liner now installed. I saw ppl just covering the top layer with Redgard without the divot method like yours but I like that some water will drain through those holes at the bottom of the drain with your method. Awesome work. Time will tell how it will perform 🎭

What’s a divot area? That’s not standard practice. How the hell do you tile that bowl? Why not a standard slope from corner to drain?
@egformula2 жыл бұрын
Divot area is a substitute for a preslope, all showers require preslope before any final mud is done, even if your using a rubber pan. Standard practice is preslope, Liner, then final mud. Divot Method is final mud, & liner Basically you can skip a step. However the main reason for Divot Method is to avoid moisture under Mud-Pan which could create mold or the smell of mold etc.. Divot Method actually goes way back it usto be standard practice we just don't see it as much now in days. Btw after waterproofing you fill the Divot area with mud before tiling to be flush with drain. End of video I show how its looks filled & complete. @ 18:00

18:22 I'm a DIY Dad trying to start a shower mortar pan over a subfloor. I didn't see the pea gravel at the weep holes I keep reading about. Can you explain? Is the mortar porous enough to not need the gravel?
@egformula2 ай бұрын
The motar is definitely porous so water will definitely get through however pea gravel is common practice it helps accumulate the water so it drips into weap hole and I wish I wouldn't of forgotten it for this video but believe me iv done tile 20yrs + if I forget to use pea gravel wouldn't harm it at all just would be preferable to use.

@inkfusiontattooempire9172 actually if you dont know, its not a dumb question because you may be thinking how would thinset bond to something rubbery etc.. but yes as long as it's (Modified) Thinset then it's all good.

Technically you shouldn't tbh, if so you may end up trapping water in between which could also cause it to take longer to dry and its just suppose to drain out properly.

I like the method but why wouldn't you just swap out to a bonded drain ? By keeping this type of drain , it seems you have to go thru to many steps, especially doing the mud divot. What do you think the advantages are with a 3 piece drain and this system compared to a bonded drain and that system? Is it simply the price? Because this is definitely cheaper. Two more question, how is your durock fastened to the 2x4s , Do you screw then redgaurd? And no pebbles on weep holes? Thanks
@egformula2 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean by a bonded drian im assuming you mean the traditional where first you do a preslope, Waterproof then mud pack it directly to the drain? If so one of its benefits and probably the most important one would be to avoid moisture/water to the mudpack vs the other way which water would have to travel to through the mud before reaching the preslope & the waterproof and causing the mud to hold water for a long time. I think I have a clip of the installer that did this same shower before I did and the mud was holding tons of water. I will upload a short video showing it, i will be under a YT Shorts after this message. The durock yes your correct screw, & fill with thinset and then Waterproof. And your 100% correct must use pebble for weap holes or broken small pieces of tile for substitute.
@vapdivrr56562 жыл бұрын
@@egformula one example of a bonded drain is a schlueter drain and they don't require a pre slope (single float) these are used normally with the schluter system with a membrane sort of how you used the fabric but also can be used exactly as you did, the only difference between your method and one used with a bonded drain is the divot. With a bonded drain you do not need to do the divot because the drain is different, so you just mud flat. I like the flo fx drains instead of schlueter. So the only difference is you have to install this drain then everything else is the same and this drain adapts right to the 3 piece drain like in your video. The 3 piece drains are really for pan liners not single float systems but the bonded drains are specifically made for single float...in the end im sure your system works just as good but perhaps an extra step , not sure but look into the flo fx drains....
@PlumbNutz2 жыл бұрын
@@vapdivrr5656 with a bonded drain there is fabric that is glued to the plastic body of the drain and I have seen this fail at this point.
