So many bands claim ‘the best’ drummer, guitarist, bass player, keys player, but the truth is that they were all in one band.

This is part of a series of songs across a few albums written by Mike Portnoy collectively called the 12 step suite. He wrote it/them as part of his recovery.

This was Part 2 of the "12 Step suite" by Dream Theater... This performance was from 2004 in Japan's Nippon Budokan Hall, released in '04 as a triple live CD & concert DVD 'Live at Budokan' w/ James LaBrie (vocals), John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), Jordan Rudess (keyboards) and Mike Portnoy (drums)... They did record Part 3 ('The root of all evil') live for the 2006 live album/ DVD 'Score'.

One of my absolute favourite bands of all time. I'm going to see them for the 12th time on November 8th in Stockholm, Sweden. This is after the return of Mike Portnoy and the 5th time I see him with Dream Theater. Can't wait!

Dear Readhededneighbor, brilliant that you went into the lyrics and meaning in this song - the complexities of life, when people are struggling with addictions. Dream Theater all kinds of problems in our lives, experiences in our lives into music and lyrics. Also the different issues with mental disturbances. This sets them apart from most other bands

Dream theater is just an ufo in the planet Metal, virtuosity, genious and so so cretiv and influent! This guys since 1985 invented the Prog metal. This song is a pure delight and alos such powerfull. It's a part of the history of the drummer Mike Portnoy who suffers like me of alchoholism.

Really great reaction!!! This is my favorite song in the 12-step suite, and the song that really grabbed me and made me a fan for the rest of my life. Some fun Rush-related facts: The band came up with their first band name, "Majesty", while waiting in line to get Rush tickets and talking about how some of Rush's music was so majestic. When making decisions or seeking direction, Dream Theater's motto has always been WWRD - "What Would Rush Do?" Rush's influence is really pervasive in their music. Some of the most Rushy songs are "The Looking Glass" and "The Best of Times". They have covered Rush songs (mostly live), but here is a studio cover of Xanadu: kzbin.info/www/bejne/goGTemyCm8iHoq8

Both Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci (the guitar player, not to be confused with John Myung the bassist) are both the backup vocalists. When Mike left the band, John was the only one left to sing the background vocals. Dream Theater are the most talented, polished, tight progressive metal band in existence. Hands down. Cheers 🇨🇦.

And another great reaction. I was just waiting to see your gorgeous head explode... Thank God that didn't happen. But it's really sad to see that your follow-up reaction to "The Root of all Evil" seems to be blocked nearly world-wide. At least I couldn't find any VPN server where it wasn't blocked. If I were in your position, I would try and contact fellow reactor Doug Helvering (The Daily Doug). He seems to have quite a good contact with Jordan Rudess. Maybe they can help you to get your stuff unblocked... With love from Germany, Prog O'Holic PS.: I strongly hope that these block won't discourage you...

My favorite Dream Theater stuff was always when they sounded a lot like Pink Floyd, like this one : Dream Theater - The Spirit Carries On (Metropolis Pt. 2, Live at New York, 2000) kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6ikZ2iKit-hpc0 Oh, and then they even did that, a complete life version of the whole"Dark Side of the Moon" album, and it quite great : kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYbShpyjbLx6rdE And then there is "Best of Times", i just love love love the guitar solos from that one,

I was waiting to see when you'd get to some Dream Theater. I know that you've already reviewed some of their stuff. There is no way to be a RUSH fan and not check out Dream Theater. I've been a RUSH fan for 40 years now and I have seen them Live 11 times. GBOAT! Dream Theater is Great too but I like the original Band and Drummer Mike Portnoy, not to say that Mike Mangini isn't good, he's just not Portnoy. Check out "The Count of Tuscany" with Mike Portnoy playing You'll love it.

Nope, they (or rather their drummer Mike Portnoy, as he wrote the lyrics) talk about struggle with alcoholism. This song essentially covers steps 4 and 5 of Alcoholics Anonymous program, and is second in series of five songs (called "12 step suite"), centered around the entire 12-step program and Portnoy's alcoholism battle
