I remember when I saw Marillion live for the first time, I came out of the theater floating on a cloud. They ended the show with Neverland and got the loudest standing ovation from the audience. They have so many great songs. That is a rabbit hole that goes on for a very long time. So underrated in America, but once you take the time to listen to them, you're hooked! Great reaction!

Thank you :) As a Rush fan since the late 70’s I can honestly say that Marillion are one of the best bands in the world, with a massive catalogue of amazing music. They are still producing superb cutting edge music, their last album, “An Hour Before It’s Dark” is stunning :)

Thanks for another great reaction, Red! Marillion has been one of my favorite bands since the early 80's, and the guitarist Steve Rothery is another one of my musical heroes, along with Steve Hackett of Genesis and Steve Howe of Yes. Not sure why all my favorite guitarists are named Steve 😀 Their original singer, Fish, is my favorite lyricist of any musical genre. I've been fortunate enough to meet the band members a few times over the years, and they are all incredibly nice and down to earth. Pete T, the bassist, is Bilbo Baggins masquerading as a rock star 😂

Idolized by their fans, underrated by the rest of the world. Marillion has 2 eras, the old skool Fish era, sounds most like old Genesis. The current H era, with a more Pink Floyd sound. I love both eras.

I lost track of these guys after the 80’s and they replaced original singer. Recently rediscovered this band a few years ago with the newer stuff. Was such a breath of fresh air for me in a dark time of music nothingness. Lots to discover with these guys. Thanks again!

Steve Hogart is a great singer, but a magnificent performer, too. The musicianship of Marillion is extremely high. I hope you react to Invisible Man, Great Escape, Out of This World and many more of their live performances. Can't wait the next Marillion Weekend!

Similar genres. Classed as Prog Rock but Marillion are less heavy and more melodic. Seen both Rush and Marillion many times live. This is one of my favourite Marillion songs and live versions. Steve Rothery on Guitar is an underrated genius. Steve Hogarth on vocals is such a great live performer. Embodies what he sings. Another rabbit hole of great songs!

Whenever possible, Marillion should always be experienced live. On cd or album, they're brilliant, but on stage they are on a completely different level. Still making brilliant music today, and still sounding absolutely fantastic. Try The Great Escape, Gaza, Easter, Estonia or Care from their last album. You won't be disappointed

Marillion is worth checking out in more depth. For my money, "Afraid of Sunlight" is an especially good, intense next song. They also have a song "Estonia" inspired by the tragic sinking of the ferry by the same name that is worth hearing. I don't know if they're Rush adjacent--maybe more like Genesis; that's for others to say. But I do think they're one of the more accomplished progressive rock acts.

Ahhh thank you for responding to the email and reacting to that so quickly, that really surprised me! Glad you liked it. Be prepared for a fair few Marillion fans to leap into your comments, the fanbase is VERY passionate. If they start arguing over which lead singer was the best, slap 'em with a wet fish: it's Steve Hogarth, the guy you were just watching. A few extra recommendations for you, then: The Great Escape (Live 2013) kzbin.info/www/bejne/poKaZXatjcifn68si=cMSPhq_XG5AxU6fV The Crow And The Nightingale (Live 2023) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJO9pqqloaqAlaMsi=0p7esAs5SrSfNGKR The Space (Live at the Royal Albert Hall 2017) kzbin.info/www/bejne/joqxfoWOrcqkrM0si=kXeIgC0MUOVUbb6W Man Of A Thousand Faces (Live 2011) kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3S1g4WkpLNppLMsi=eqIYBJUYi23K6k2C Easter (Live at the Royal Albert Hall 2017) kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5_MdayEiqt5Y6csi=qLxt1f9dYsMsacqs

Marillion specializes in doing an end run around your rational mind and entering your heart when you might not be expecting it. Between Steve Hogarth's incredible voice, and Steve Rothery's emotive guitar playing, and the great playing of Mark Kelly on keyboards and Pete Trewavas on bass guitar, the music of the modern version of Marillion is the most emotional I've ever heard. It was very nice to see that you "got it" on a first listen. As you can tell by now, reacting to Marillion won't get you a lot of clicks or comments. Their fan base isn't big enough, so it you decide to react to another one of their songs, that choice is going to be pretty much a labor of love on your part. I suggest one of the following two songs, with links to a live version: 1. The Great Escape - this is the true final song from a concept album, "Brave", released in 1993. It is basically a girl's suicide note sung by Hogarth in the first person. kzbin.info/www/bejne/poKaZXatjcifn68 2. Ocean Cloud - Prog is famous for long form songs. This is an 18 minute epic about Sir Donald Allum, the first man to power a one-man rowboat across the Atlantic Ocean, then back to Europe. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGPKhI2OptWlaMk

I preferred Fish's era, but they're still good. I was at the show they did for the Seasons End tour in Barcelona in 89, I think. They played Moving pictures twice over while we waited for the band to come out, that's how I discovered Rush.

I'm beginning to see a dawning in you as you discover wonderful new bands. Marillion are a top of the tree prog band especially in the Fish era whose solo albums are all excellent. It's perhaps time you moved off your Rush love in and embraced Yes the greatest band that has graced this planet then Gabriel's Genesis then you'll understand where Rush got their influences and inspirations from.

Soundscape would sum up what you were saying at the end I think. I haven't heard them in years. They had a couple of chart hits in the eighties with their former lead singer. Not sure if they were hits there but there's a couple you might recognise if they did. Kayleigh and Lavender. They both came off an album called Misplaced Childhood which I have kicking about somewhere! Heart of Lothian was a good one too. Fun fact: My first ever manager at work knew the original lead singer.

Marillion's name is inspired by Tolkien's work, more precisely the Silmarillion book. I never heard them referred as Rush like but Genesis, hell yeah. This song is post Fish era. Fish is in my book a far better singer and front man with theatrical similarities to Peter Gabriel. When they started in the early 80's with their first album Script for a Jester's Tear, they we're highly popular in a short time, they were all over rock radios. Listen to the song Garden Party from that first album and you'll see why, not my favorite though. I had the pleasure to see them live in 87, what a great show it was. The third album is my favorite, Misplaced Childhood.
