I'd love to go. I'm an old American redhead. I remember many years ago going to a beach in the south of England. So many people were pale with red hair. I felt blissfully and very much at home. I've never experienced bullying because of my hair color. But it would be so cool to be surrounded by other redheads.

@@KeilaBevins Yes, technically...but if they were going for a completely original Ariel adaptation with Halle Bailey, why dye her hair red and not keep her natural hair colour instead, seeing as she wanted to also keep her natural hair texture/look? I think it would've been more representative of the mermaid legends from Africa that way. Her natural dark hair also suits her better and highlights her features.

@@KeilaBevins I already know Anne with an E is a natural blonde but they still kept it true enough not to change the character's hair colour, despite all the other changes they made to the story. Also, red hair suits her, probably because of her Irish ancestry. Yeah, 80s Anne of Green Gables was better but the show couldn't have been that bad if people protested the show being cancelled... It probably appealed to a younger, more modern audience and I think that's great because otherwise young people probably wouldn't care about older stories from the early 1900s. Disney rebooting their own live-action version of a story tells me they DID want to be original, especially since they cast Halle Bailey, which was a step in the right direction toward inclusivity and diversity. She's also got a great voice. Disney always take liberties with live-action versions anyway (Cinderella, Maleficent, Aladdin). I get they were paying homage to the cartoon version with the red hair but it really wasn't necessary either. If Ariel can be any ethnicity, why can't she also be a brunette? Halle even said she wanted to keep her natural hair texture and look, so why dye it (which is harsh on natural hair)? Ginger and redhead are the exact same thing, ginger is a nickname used to refer to redheads as a whole...

No one is left out, even dark haired people. Redhead Days Festival invites gingers and redheads, their families, and even fans of redheads. I went to the festival with my older ginger sister in August 2013. It was a planned trip to visit Netherlands. From that gorgeous and memorable 13 days trip we dedicated a three days to the festival and Breda city. There was a cardboard to show specific shades of redheads (e.g. classic red, auburn, cherry, coral and deep burgundy) to qualify for the big group photo, which I participated in. Initially I was there as a sister of a ginger, but they qualified me as a natural auburn (one of redhead shades). However, no one excluded from the rest of festival activities like the opening party, spoorpark, theatre, campfires, BBQ's, photo booths, kids area, and the end party. Anyone can buy a ticket and go in the last weekend of August of every year regardless of their hair colors. It's a three days of events for people to enjoy themselves, put their middle school bullied years behind them, and be proud of what they become. The big group photo event for gingers and "qualified" redheads occur only in the last day of the festival. My ginger sister got teased in school because of her red-hair, pale skin and freckles. I'm glad she didn't let that negative experience to define her. Now she's a confident woman, successful pediatrician, married to a surgeon, and have beautiful ginger twins. And I'm a proud aunt. Historically, redheads have been feared and vilified from the ancient Greece era, and medieval times, to renaissance period, which caused a saga of resentment and distrust of flame-haired people. Only in few occasions they were adored. In folklore, they were vampires, witches, the undead, and baby eaters. In present time, they are often seen as easy targets for mockery and bullying especially in middle and high schools. We all heard the stereotypes, slurs, and derogatory terms. No one is trying to play oppression olympics or arguing that redheads are more stigmatized than other groups, but this is one of the last socially accepted forms of prejudice against people for a trait they were born with. The truth is there would have been no need for the Redhead Days Festival in Netherlands or the Redhead Convention in Ireland if people view the red hair for Irish and Scottish in the same way they viewed the blonde hair for Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. There is an increase of bullying in our society but there is an increase in awareness too, which is a good thing. A simple search in google for "redheads" confirm the prejudice still exists.
