You can watch and learn or learn over time. Best thing I found was patience and getting myself right before entering, by simply breathing and saying to myself, "I love my mother. This is not about me, it's all about my lovely, beautiful mom". Then enter. And when I bring pictures, cards or memories about the past with me, it's the best way for her brain to warm up and clear up. Then we have a good time.

It takes skill and experienxe to practice this successfully in real life. It took me 2 years. It works!!!! You just have to practice to get better at it. I've been cursed so many times and even bullied by residents but when you lose cool or patience or take it personally, you lose.

I see alot of comments about persons saying the residents won't always calm down this easily. But the point of this video I'm sure is to show US the Caregivers how we should react in situations like these. The patience and insight of "Sandy" in the scenarios are golden. Definitely how our attitude should be.

It's easy for a CNA in skilled to be running 3 halls about 60 hr's alone! Cause a nurse didn't go to school to do aid work thats what poor people do

It's really difficult with my grannie cause she doesn't like ANY activity... There's barely anything that she enjoys doing (mind you she's 90 y.o) and it's really difficult to redirect her without her feeling useless because in the memories she has, she was a strong and independent woman and has never needed anyone's help to do anything. Her husband passed away when they were in their late 20s so she doesn't remember a lot about my grandpa... I just wish she'd be at peace and find something or some activity that soothes her and keeps her calm.

People who have had a strong Faith life may benefit from sharing in reading and prayers. When it was vital in someone's life before, with all of tools regularly available, guiding and leading them back to their Faith life and the bible is comforting. It worked over the phone with my former mother in law recently ❤. I didn't plan it but it came out and grace was able to get back in. I don't know if there are trained ministers but it seems most soothing with a family member or perhaps people who were regularly in contact helps more. There are many tools a person of Faith can use even with those who care for them in these facilities. I'm learning and hopefully can share with others whatever I learn. Although understand it isn't an experiment it is a ministry apparently ❤

I work with dementia. I truly understand. It’s pure unfair how they make the caregiver seem idiotic and unsympathetic to the persons needs. Not how it is in real life at all. I’m a human too. Especially if there is no ratio between caregivers and patients and that’s the truth, sorry. I care, I truly do. These people built our world and I respect that but they are gonna wanna do what they wanna do at the end of the day. We have to be more flexible and have more people on staff.

This is surprising that people need to be told these things. This isn't for just people with dementia. This aplies to everyone. Human beings also get agitated when hungry thirsty tired or need,to use the bathroom?? I agree that we need,to,learn to help those who have and to understand the process of Alzheimer's. Most aids in skilled are way under payed and have far to many residents. If I 60 residents on my 2 halls cause staffing issues I have no time for one on one, but boy do the owners and stock holders love it!!! More money in less money out!! Health care SHOULD NOT BE A FOR PROFIT Industry!!! Oh your sick and need help? How much money u got?profiting off no just others illness but by not ensuring their staff is payed bare minimum. I didn’t even get training in this I just intuitively did this, I knew they where upset because they where confused so changed that upsetness to curiosity and even joy by redirecting their thoughts. In our care home, that cat was the best redirection ever lol it was cute and fluffy they loved it 😂

These are helpful, but instead of having someone like Clara, it'd be more helpful to have someone well-meaning, but somewhat ignorant as to what to do (in these scenarios). Like someone who listened to the old man, but forgot to suggest an activity or something. I can't imagine anyone getting very far behaving as Clara actress was, and we in medical field should know better than to be that derogatory!

Today, I had to take the car keys and driver’s license, from my husband who’s getting forgetful. While I was out for my morning walk, he couldn’t find his wallet, so he drove to the store anyway, and had the cashier look up his credit card in order to pay for his purchase. We turned the the house and vehicles upside down before he found it under his chair. I’m worried, scared, and petrified of what’s coming ahead. I’m not good at asking for help at all.

I have had to deal with all of these issues.The frustrating thing about where I work is that there is very minimal training of the workers.That's why I have to educate myself by watching utube.Sometimes these techniques work but not always.

Explain how sometimes it works and show footage of a patient not taking at all to these methods and what is done at that point? this is fake and makes the care giver student believe it is this easy and honestly its not by any means

It's an introduction to elder care. You can get into the difficult situations later, but you obviously can't use images of actual patients having difficulties because family members would rightfully sue.

Wow, yea this is how it works smfh. Redirection is a great technique, but sum get s riled up that they are in redirect able. And then it's a domino effect. A quiet room or change of subject but if the also become manic. And at that point they just go around race track over and over and over again with each lap they get worse and worse and worse to the point that they start agitating my other residents. To the point that thay beging to act out. My only option was to remove all other residents from the situation. And that worked for a few weeks then when one day when I did this, which is not far to every other residents. She just stared going into rooms yelling waking other residents up telling them she wants to die, we won't let her see her kids, we won't let her call her parents to come get her (92 yr old?) We won't let her out (at 11pm to go get help?)..... So cool story bro. But old girl smart sandy is dealing with pleasantly confused one on one, lol I wish that was a real thing. Fast food workers make more money per hr than cnas . This is a joke. Great vid for best case non realistic rediction

Did you know that the word "idiot" was far from derogatory originally? You can't go back in time to change it to something that's more PC today, so you have to deal with reality and when you read it in old literature, repeat to yourself, "The author isn't being derogatory. The author used the term that was respectful in his own time." Anything else is denial of reality. And do you know why terms become "derogatory"? Because insecure people look for weaknesses to exploit to make others feel bad. Then instead of standing up to the bully, the nice people go find another term, which will be turned into an insult within 5 years max.
