Rediscovering the Midland Line Part 2

Continuing my journey of discovery on the old Midland Leicester to Rugby line I go south from Leire to Ullesthorpe where I am hoping to find my first forgotten station.. What I found was a difficult walk with some pleasant surprises...

I’m sure if you’d have contacted Ullesthorpe golf club prior to your visit then they’d have given you access to film the bridge. If I would have been playing then I’d have let you as long as there weren’t any golfers in the vicinity of the 8th which was the tees you originally encountered. Such a shame that these lines closed as they did. My father’s old farmland used to run from Brownsover Rd at Newbold to Cosford near the Rugby section. Thanks for posting these. They are certainly fascinating 👍🏼

Thank you for watching and your kind comments. I don't tend to plan visits too much as I just set off walking and filming! Perhaps that's something I should address in the future! Both the structures you found are relatively modern. The platelayers hut is brick built with a concrete roof and the second item is a concrete built ballast bin, which was used for fine stone ballast for the local gang to use to maintain the level of the track by jacking up the low spots to the correct height and packing fine ballast under the sleepers. Both items would be of either LMS or BR vintage and not original to the line which was built around 1840. I travelled the route many times as a boy in the late 1950s to go trainspotting at Rugby which was one of the nearest places on the West Coast Mainline. Some very good memories of days gone by! Thanks for the video which was well worth getting your feet wet for.

Great video. My local railway. My house backs on to the line. If you want to see Ullesthorpe Station go up on the Main Street bridge and look south. The northbound platform clan be clearly seen. In winter anyway. Summer tree foliage hides it. The station master’s house is still lived in down The Dell.
