Mike and Jay brought up ET in this, as a commentary of how children's movies used to be a lot darker, and I loved ET overall when I saw it at the drive-in when I was 7, though there were a few moments that scared the shit out of me, like when Elliot first discovers ET in the woods, or when they find ET dying in the creek, or the scene when the government scientists finally get a hold of ET and Elliot, and ET dies. But, during that same viewing of ET, I looked over at the neighboring drive-in screen, and the bloodtest scene in The Thing was playing, at the point when Palmer was revealed to be infected with The Thing, which FUCKED ME UP for years. Very weird night at the drive-in for a 7 year old lol. I loved Dark Crystal when I was a little kid too, but it also scared the living shit out of me. The Skeksis were and are still nightmare fuel to me. I don't find it surprising that I'm a horror buff now though. I was primed for it.

Loved Return to oz as a kid...was never scared by the wheelers though...because even then I thought...well...what the hell are they gonna do if they catch you? They got no hands! You could just push em over! Still...the lead wheeler did have a creepy laugh...but Mombi and the Gnome king...that's one helluva different story! Especially the f*cking gnome king! Whoever that actor was he really conveyed exactly the right level of affably sinister evil...lots of calm, calculating moments followed by terrifying rages! And of course his parallel is the Dr at the start who is supposed to treat Dorothy... as a kid I was thrown by the fact that he looked almost like father Christmas at times when he was more human, then he would turn into this amorphous enraged monster! Whilst not perhaps timeless, I have often thought Return to Oz was a worthy sequel to the 1939 version and also probably closer in spirit to the Frank L Baum books.

Especially the concept that everyone from Oz is someone from Dorothys life, expect the actress playing Glinda. So it’s great that Glinda is the same actress as her late mother! I felt similar with my following of Terry Gilliam and thinking when I saw his name on Brothers Grimm I thought well maybe it will be surprisingly good. No, it was not. Return To Oz I love, loved, and was terrified and amazed by as a kid!

Oz the Great and Powerful is basically a shot for shot remake of Army of Darkness.

Kids films and stories, in general, need the scary and tough times parts as it's not only exciting but it also teaches the important lesson that, yes things will happen in life you don't like and will scare or disturb you, but if you don't give up you will overcome it in the end. If you only have super happy nice stuff all the time it teaches the lesson, the world is full of candy of love and nothing bad will ever happen, so when something does happen in real life like that they are entirely unequipped to deal with it and fall apart. Which would probably explain why we have some kids these days who think we shouldn't teach about WW2 because it's upsetting them.

I don't know about this movie but you should re view return to oz. Weird movie that's underrated in my opinion

Funny they mention the thing about the Munchkins because just recently Peter Dinkledge made some remarks that got live action roles for dwarves removed from a live-action Snow White remake. And not unsurprisingly little people actors were freakin' pissed that he cost seven of them a job.

OMG! I can’t believe you guys reviewed ‘Return to Oz’! One my favourite movies when i was a kid. Hadn’t seen it in a long time. It’s true, they don’t make ‘em like that anymore.

"VHS technology dead for at least fifteen years"...? I remember my final VHS tape purchased was Dreamcatcher (Stephen King) at a walmart in 2005. Granted it was next to DVD copies of the movie, and VHS became unavailable to purchase from major retail stores not long after this date. But thats only 8 years from the date this Half in the Bag episode came out.

I've been trying to think of a James Franco movie where I enjoy James Franco's performance, but I got nothin. It always feels like I'm watching an SNL parody when he's on screen.

I vaguely remember seeing on some morning show news that James Franco was actually a replacement for Heath Ledger, who died during filming. I faintly recall seeing some shots of heath ledger in the role being shown. I could be entirely wrong and this could the sleep deprived memories of a teen from a decade ago.

That was The imaginary of Parnassus or something like that. Terry Gillian directed it, and they used Ledger's footage and then replaced him with Colin Farrell and other two actors who I can't remember. What I do remember is that these three actors donated their payment to Ledger's daughter.

I don't know, Coraline, Paranorman- several parts of Gravity Falls had me fucking speechless at its horrifying nature. I think dark stuff for kids is going okay.
@CaffeinatedKing8 жыл бұрын
The issue is that stuff feels so few and far between now, which admittedly makes it all the better when you finally find things like that. Gravity Falls feels like a long lost gem from the 90s. Adventure Time also has some pretty good stuff generally involving the liche and the nature of how that world came to be. But it would still be nice to see more movies in particular go that route of making happy/fun moments something to be valued and feel earned because they're surrounded by something unfortunate. Lion King is a pretty great example, you have a fun Disney movie with comedic moments and musicals and then everything goes horribly and dramatically wrong, but eventually it's okay again. You don't need to go out of your way to scar kids for life or anything for the sake of it or be deliberately "raw" towards kids. But I really do think they deserve to have more good stories and adventures in their own era from movies with proper ups and downs along the way.

Caffeinated King I think Laika is the king of that right now- (Just watched Kubo, and that's pretty horrifying in its own right) and Steven Universe is going strong as well, with its own scary moments. I still personally think it's going strong- if all films were kind of scary, it would lose its sting.

Land before Time (Spielberg, Don Bluth)...littelfoot's mother dying, after what i would say the best dinosaur fight combination earthquake scene ever animated. pretty powerful stuff for a kids movie, but is balanced out well with some genuine heart warming moments, one of the first times i ever saw the "circle" of life described without malice but just as what is, and makes up for all the hardship and sad parts with the big pay off in the end when the dinosaurs each the great valley and their surviving families.
