Fun story about this movie: i went to see it in theaters with my gf and it was release day and we were a little early. Bought the tickets, went to the door, went to walk in and a group of what I can only describe as Oz fanatics stopped us and said "uh, there's a line!" And it was probably about 5 people all in Wizard of Oz clothes just hanging out near the door. So we apologized and stood behind them until an usher led us all in. When the movie began, the only people in the audience were the 5 Oz superfans and us. They appeared dejected when the movie ended. I still think about that frequently.

When this movie was being made, there was a big push in Michigan for film studio incentives, and there was all this hype around it, like Michigan could be the next big thing in film making. So they built this huge studio in Pontiac, MI, and that's where this was filmed. During filming, they invited some state representatives to come and visit the set, to try and gain their support. I happen to be related to one of those representatives (first cousin once removed lol), and knowing that I was a big fan of film and animation, he reached out to see if I wanted to go with him. So I got to tour the whole place, walking right on to some of the sets. I was in a throne room with gold scattered everywhere, a dark forest with ten foot tall mushrooms, and a huge open warehouse like space, where they had the air balloon suspended on a wire that could "fly" across the set. At one point, we were standing just outside one of the sets, with around ten of the film-crew. A door opens, and Rachel Weisz walks out. She had just finished a scene, so she's in full wardrobe, looks incredible, and of course, everyone just turns to stare at her.. She gave us an awkward, "Hey, guys!" 🙂 We responded, "Hi..." 🥴 Then she was swiftly taken away by golf cart. All in all, it was really fun experiencing something like that happening right here in my home state. Unfortunately, the incentives were cut when Snyder took office (same guy that was at least partially responsible for the Flint water crisis - great guy), and the Michigan film industry pretty much died after that.

With regard to Oz the Great and Powerful - The Thing is one of my favorite movies. It has probably the best dog actor i’ve ever seen. It walks down a hallway, pauses and looks in each door - like an alien trying to figure things out. Basically, displaying uncharacteristically somber behavior for a dog.
@amityislandchum2 ай бұрын
Time for The Trivia! That's because it was a wolf-dog hybrid. The crew and actors all raved about how much better it was as an actor than a regular dog, because it would hit its marks and complete its directions so perfectly as to almost be robotic. The fact that it was a wolf-dog also caused all of the other dogs in the film (who were Siberian Huskies) to be naturally wary of it. In the scene where the ThingDog is first put into the kennel and lays down while the other dogs move away from it, looking terrified -- no training was given to the Huskies! They were actually just that uncomfortable with the wolf-dog. The wolf-dog's name was "Jed" and also starred in the "White Fang" movies! :)

It truly is a shame that whenever people talk about The Wizard of Oz, and other adjacent films, nobody EVER mentions The Wiz. And maybe I'm very attached to the movie because I'm African-American and it's a staple project within the Black community, but even aside from that, The Wiz was a technically impressive film within its own right. The music was incredible (which is to be expected when you have both Michael Jackson and Diana Ross playing the leads), the sets (especially the set piece under the Twin Towers which doubled for the Emerald City) were awe inspiring and the alternate take on the world is darkly beautiful with an urban twist. I wish KZbinrs would give more shine to The Wiz, because it truly deserves it (especially over films like Oz, the Great and Powerful). But I know they never will.

I have always liked this film up to this day, but I also saw it as a kid before seeing the Evil Dead films, and HOLY shit, Sam Raimi really just did Army of Darkness again!

Can I suggest a little run on Caravan of Garbage of "low-budget hidden gems"? For instance "Dave Made a Maze" would make for a cracking episode. :)

Oddly enough I just watched The Thing a few days ago (bought my first 4k blu-ray ever). I've been doing Wilford Brimley's Blair non-stop the last few days. Popping up outside my parents windows "I wanna come inside! I'm all better now!"

Loved this breakdown - I always enjoyed this film. It's very Raimi, and I'll always take more Raimi in the world (and ... he's sorta stretching his aesthetic a bit? Taking some interesting risks, having been given some good funds to play with for the effects and overall production design), And, it was a shame Franco died when he did, cos he does show some good range in this, more than I'd seen him do in any other of his films. You're so right about Williams being so deeply wholesome and GOOD - she makes it way more than just one note - her glowing goodness and powerful innocence is so deep it's actually scary! Kunis - great as always. I wish she was in more films. I even watch Jupiter Ascending because of her!

Even if there is another James and Maso in the other side of the world, I highly doubt they could construct a concept as deeply upsetting as the ‘dog-of-a-ratman, James Franco (RIP), rooting around creating Green Women’. There’s a certain kind of horror watching this channel and I wouldn’t trade it for a cigarette

Fun fact - Cadbury and Milka are both owned by Mondelez, so there is no issue, only endless cross overs between all of Mondelez snacks - oreo x milka, cadbury x lu, basically, its a team up

I remember when this movie came out, I was invited to a "gold carpet" première with a lot of celebs in Holland. Now, the peculiar thing is, I'm not a celebrity myself and for the love of me I can't remember what I was doing between all those hoity-toity famous people. It's a bizarre memory I have of this movie and the day it was released.

James&Maso probably won't read this but you mentioning not much Raimi in this movie but I say this movie is just Army of Darkness. A arrogant man gets transported to a far off place. Gets mistaken for the prophesied savior/chosen one. Uses his advanced knowledge gain an upper hand. Are set on a mission through a dark/spooky forest to get what they desire most (ash-go home/wiz-gold) which fails miserably. Both use lies/deception to get beautiful woman to bed only for that woman to transmorphers into hideous hags by the end who lament he found her beautiful once. Both grow as characters at the end to save the peasants using modern knowledge both utilizing black powder. And the mentioned armies amassing and the witch design
