Hey Jeremy, thanks for doing these videos. I've got an OP-1 again after being without one for several years, and I have to say it's definitely an essential instrument for me, despite its flaws. There's nothing else like it, and I have never had more fun making music than I have had with the OP-1. Quick note: the "envelope" in the drum engine is not an envelope, but a compressor. Took me forever to figure that one out, but yeah. The blue knob adjusts the attack portion of the compressor, the green knob adjusts the threshold, the white controls the decay/release, and the red controls the ratio.

for those who didn't understand at 4:28 about "shift and the envelope" I didn't understand what envelope was. it is when you have the blue curve you can edit (pressing 2 after choosing the synth) then shift by itself brings up that PlayMode and Portamento window. I don't really unerstand playmode yet, but protamento is how long you want the sliding to be between notes.

Thank you for this playlist, I finally got one second hand and for a decent price. I really like the form factor, the portability and the intuitive work flow. My biggest concern, on the other side, was that I could not export my songs as midi files to my "serious" DAW... Now maybe I found a solution and I want to share it with anyone interested. With the latest firmware you can finally export each track as single audio files, so you can import directly in ableton live as audio tracks. At this point simply right click a on the resulting audio clips and select "convert to" midi". You can choose "convert armony to midi", "convert melody to midi" and "convert drums to midi" according to the type of source material. Obviously, the cleaner the original sound is the better the results.

I had to do the same because of the same reason. Then cracked Ableton and my music production took a huge leap in quality and complexity. Keep in mind even if your labtop sucks you can still freeze tracks in Ableton to keep CPU usage low. Also if you are a student you can get Live 10 Suite for 350 Euros. There is really no benefit of the OP-1 besides its portability. The whole "limitations spark your creativity" thing is just a huge marketing sceem imo (i think the opposite is true). Also ceep in mind that your op-1 wouldve broken at some point especially if you take it with you very often. Electronics will always break, the battery and buttons will suffer after some time. Also vibrations from transport will always fuck it up.

I built a mixing deck that uses the philosophy of a virtual tape system to function and record. The idea has its "flaws", but most of those are more just differences when compared to modern DAWs that make changing and editing a track on the fly easier. I got started building a studio room and booth when I had the resources and used an 8 track setup to record my random bits of synth, drums, etc. When I designed and built my digital version I tried to keep within the bounds of that 8 track system while adding in a lot of features the OP-1 aims for. I like the mix of limitations and possibilities this way of mixing promotes.

If you’re an artist who doesn’t have a lot of money, go for something more reliable and cheaper. Yeah rich you tubers can afford this equipment and afford to have it malfunction, but recently since teenage engineering became popular I believe their build quality and quality control has went wayyyy down. I love these videos, thank you for keeping me inspired as well as for helping me to keep my interest high toward saving up for one of my own. Excellent video of what appears to be an excellent instrument.
