Hello! Today on Flat Tire Farm, we compare REDMOND REAL SALT with its livestock counterpart and consider whether we are comfortable using the Redmond livestock salt for our personal consumption.

I just wanted to let you know I bought some quite a few months back and just never had time to deal with it. Finally got a chance to play around with it and ran it though my Vitamix and you would never be able to tell the difference. It made perfect size salt with just 5-10 in the blender. 👍🏻 I’m sold!!

Hello friend! I’m so glad you found it useful, we’ve been using our little coffee grinder to grind it, but a vitamix is genius! How many cups are you putting in it at one time? I make big batches, but it’s a lot of work for my little coffee grinder. I think I’ll dig out the vitamix next time. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😊

@@FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska I probably did about 3-4 cups at a time. Tried doing a large batch at first and it just wasn’t getting it all the way through so I made them smaller. And that post above should have said 5-10 seconds in the blender. Like I said it worked perfectly. I won’t go back to using the pink Himalayan salt that’s for sure.

Hey Dianne, I’m glad you found this video iseful. I haven’t use it for canning yet because of the iodine content of the salt. Hey friend, I was able have an hour long conference with a gentleman that works on the livestock side of Redmond. The main differences are the processing equipment from the livestock salt are not held in a sanitary environment as the human consumption salt. And that, although the salt comes from exactly the same mine, the mining processes are different. The salt meant for human consumption , is scraped off the salt cave walls, and the livestock salt is blasted. Most people’s concerns are with the blasting methods of the livestock salt. I have a pin comment at the top of the comment section of this video for any people that are concerned about what contents of things might be left in the livestock salt after the blasting. It’s Redman’s position that all blasting material is consumed by the blast. In that pinned comment you’ll find a link to the trace analysis that Redmond has done on the livestock salt. You’ll see that no blasting material exist at the .02 ppm level. Given that information I feel comfortable eating the livestock salt and have done for the last year. I appreciate your input on this. I actually contacted Redmond twice, and the first representative told me that the livestock salt is never blasted. Then I was contacted by a man that has worked on the livestock side of Redmond for many many years. And he gave me an interview where I was able to ask all my questions , I hope that helps. Have a blessed week friend and thanks for watching.

That’s awesome that you got to see the mine. I’m kind of jealous. I spent a significant amount of time talking with a gentleman involved in the Redmond livestock salt. And you’re absolutely right. The equestrian and livestock salt is blasted. The question is whether there is blast material left in that salt or not, right? I had the same question so I did a little bit more research and in the pinned comment at the top of the comment section for this video is a link for the trace analysis for all the components in that salt. If there were any particulates left in that salt, it would show up there. So, I leave it there, so people can make their own decisions about whether they feel like this is a safe choice or not. That’s definitely true Miss Alice. All livestock salt is blasted and all human consumption salt is not blasted. The link pinned at the top of this this comment stream takes you to the trace analysts for this salt. It shows that at least to .04ppm, there are no blasting chemicals present. It is the understanding of the mine manager and the salesmen for the livestock side that the blasting chemicals are completely consumed in the blasting process. I had concerns also, so I contacted the livestock side of Redmond and spent some time getting my questions answered. Very lovely folks. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😊

Just mill it or grind by hand with pestle and mortar, etc.. feeding the live stock with what's left is an option.

I really like that song but do you know if it has any iodine at all in it?
@FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska
@FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska Жыл бұрын
Hey friend, great question. I looked it up and it looks like the iodine content is 10pm. So yes it has iodine. I have used this salt in canning and have had no issues with the iodine content in it turning things the wrong color. I guess they sell a high iodine content blend also. Who knew? Thanks for watching and commenting. 😊

So basically there is no difference except the grit if it were strained?
@FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska
@FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks for your question. Based on the simple observations that I did, it looked the same to me once you strain the grit out. The salt granules are slightly bigger even when strained. But I saw no other major difference. On the Redmond website, they specifically address their concerns about people eating the livestock salt. Their concerns were that the food safety is different between the real salt and livestock salt. I made the personal decision to not be concerned about that fact because salt will kill any germs or bacteria that I might have been concerned about. I hope that helps. 😊

Redmond Conditioner is a clay that is harvested at the same location. It is on top of the salt deposit.

That seems like quite a bit of aluminum. 215 ppm? Drinking water ppm is between .05-.2 ppm. Am I missing something?

Yeah, but what is the leftover chunks made of. Standards for livestock foods aren’t ever the same for animals as humans. If a little crap is mined with the salt, oh well. Salt just isn’t expensive enough to feed my family questionable crap. After all, they may not be clean “minerals” for human consumption.But, that’s just me.
@FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska

That’s a good perspective friend and you should only do what you feel. comfortable with for sure. The only difference between the livestock salt and the human consumption salt is the way that is collected. That’s usually the conflict that people have with eating the livestock salt. It’s actually mined from the exactly the exact same mine. In the pinned comment for this video, there is a link to the document from Redmond real salt about what’s actually in all the salt, a trace analysis report. Those chunks are just minerals. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate your perspective. 😊

To the people who wrote the chemical process there is no such thing with redmond. The grit she refers to is minerals. She needs to go to the mine in Redmond Utah get a mine tour and see for yourself. This is not the refined processed crap you buy in the store with sugar added. Redmond is full of trace minerals naturally. When you go down in the mine it's got black spots which is highly sought after because of the sweet brine it produces, it is saught after by world renowned cheifs.
