We went on it on one of those riverboat trips in February last year,with our guests over from Canada,and I can confirm we saw so much going from Westminter all the way out east to Greenwich and back. They couldn't stop posing for pictures with each other and the various sights behind them. We went under Tower Bridge,of course. Waterloo bridge is called the Ladies bridge because a lot of the work was done during the War when there were few male labourers available. It was not designed by a woman and it was not built only by women and it was not built underbudget and its completion was massively late because of the second world war, it was opened even though it was not yet finished in 1942, and it was completed by men returning after the war. The bridge building was started in 1937 and for the first 2 years there would be very few if any women working on it.

HI, love your videos! The present Waterloo Bridge was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and while many of the construction crew were women (it was rebuilt during WWII) they were not all women - some suggest up to 65%, but there seems to be no exact details on numbers of workers or male/female split.

Being a Londoner, I wouldn't go on a tourist boat. Until my old Mum came to visit, and us kids took her down the river. Grand it was. Even a glass of wine if you wanted. (Putney Bridge)
@mariahoulihan94839 күн бұрын
Yes it is wonderful. The trick used to be to get some nice Marks and Spencer sandwiches and buy a drink on board.. tea coffee soft drinks or alcohol. Very enjoyable trips. my old Mum loved it when visiting London. Once, I nearly lost her.. lol.. We were at Greenwich quay, I had bought the two tickets, sandwiches in the bag and went in front of Mum.. my mistake. She managed to turn right instead of left and joined a French school trip.. and got on the wrong boat.. lol. A french school mistress called me, Madame. Madame. Your mother has got tangled up with my class here. lol lol lol lol.lol. Two French school boys had helped her aboard. lol. she was all a flutter listening to the French accents. I retrieved her. lol. She was a devil for not following instructions and following the person in front and the school children had got between us. lol. She did it to me at Paddington Stn. twice and had to be retrieved from the Red Cross First aid post.. in there reading glossy magazines and drinking tea and nice biscuits. Meanwhile, I was frantic, calling my brother down the line to make sure he had put her on the train in the first place.. MUM IS MISSING.. the station staff were putting callings Newbury, Reading and Didcot stations increase she got off there and was with them. lol.. turns out instead of turning left.. she had a blind spot obviously, lol.. she had turned right following the man in front when they got off the train because, and I quote 'he seemed to know where he was going'. I pointed out he did know where HE was going just not where SHE was going and at no time did I say cross the footbridge to platform 1. she was found looking concerned by BTP. lol. I miss the little liability so much. lol.. After that, I had to drive to Gloucestershire and back with her for her stays with me. Trains were deemed out according to her. lol.

I remember seeing a video of two mid-west Americans visiting London a few years back. Just before Covid hit. The first thing they did was refer to the London Eye as being the 'biggest Ferris wheel" they had ever seen. Then they went into an M&M's chocolate store for ages. After they got lunch in McDonalds and did a massive segment of their video about the self-order machines in McDonalds. They also went into a Taco Bell restaurant as well. Pretty sure they complained about the Thames being the "dirtiest, smelliest river" they had ever seen and then when they went to Nelson's column they said "the Washington monument" is bigger and better. To top it off they were goofing around trying to speak to people in terrible British accents. The whole thing was very embarrassing. Well this video was the absolute opposite of that. Respectful and cultured, which shows the element of self awareness to how one is perceived.

In addition to the note earlier about HMS Belfast, we also don't say "the" when naming most bridges in London, so it's just "Waterloo Bridge", "Blackfriars Bridge", "Westminster Bridge", etc. (except for the Albert Bridge and the Millennium Bridge--there are always exceptions to confuse people). Just mentioning since you have been doing pretty well on place names so far (except for Southwark, but that's tricky if you don't know it).

Cody! A quick pronunciation tip from a lifelong Pedant: British warships have the prefix of "His (or Her) Majesty's Ship" which abbreviates to HMS. If you say, for example, "The HMS Belfast" that expands out as "The His Majesty's Ship Belfast". Which is plainly wrong ("The" AND "His"). Yes, it works for American warships as in "The United States Ship Nimitz" but it doesn't for British ones. Or Canadian ones (HMCS). Or Australian Ones (HMAS). Or New Zealand ones (HMNZS) ............. 😉
