when putting tire/rim back on the drive unit, you can put the bike in gear to prevent the splines from turning.that way you can turn the wheel to align the splines.do not tighten the lock down on the axle until axle nut is tight.the hole in the brake side of the axle is to put a punch or screw driver to hold axle still while tightening the nut.once the nut is tightened, then lock down axle on brake side.afterwards you can torque the nut.the lock down is to help prevent axle from moving but you need movement when nut is pulling axle to it.the end of axle that has the hole will only pull in so far then the torque is used to tighten the nut which locks the whole rear end together.the lock down is to prevent axle from turning/spinning..good vid..thanks.

Do you have links or part numbers for any of it? I need to do my 85 700 and I’m assuming they’re the same? When looking up bearings on JPC I only found one set (a 3pack), am I to assume the front and rear bearings are the same?

CMSL. have a decent array of parts for classic Yamahas. My 1980 XJ650 4KO model has benefitted from this company. If they have part, they have the relevant part number for reference.

Put your bearings in the freezer and they'll tap in a lot easier.
