Ive never removed the filter first before draining the pan. By draining the pan first, removes a lot of the oil from the filter at the same time.

I loosen the oil filter on my 2007 GV with a filter wrench and then wrap it in an old rag and loosen it off. The rag absorbs most of the oil. I've had a 1991 Suzuki Sidekick, a 1997 Tracker and then this vehicle. They progressively got harder to work on... Wonderfully reliable though!

hey, how long did your vehicles last KM's wise. just bought a 2008 GV luxury trim with 312,000 kms. seeing how much work goes into an oil change just curious to know its potential life. thanks

Hi; As I haven't been able to change my own oil on my cars for years now (due to physical problems), so I have had to rely on the local "quick oil change" shop to do it. Well, to make a long story short, they messed up /cross threaded the threads on the oil pan of my '08 Suzuki Grand Vitara. The oil plug is in place and it holds oil, but they told me I would have to get the "problem repaired". It now needs a new oil change and I decided to take it to a local dealer that used to sell Suzukis. They informed me that replacing the oil pan would be a $865 job. What I would like to ask you is, since you have actually been under your Suzuki numerous times to change the oil, would replacing the oil pan be so difficult as to warrant charging $865 for the job? Is there a lot of parts to be moved out of the way, such as parts of the 4 wheel drive mechanism? I really love this car and it has been the best auto I have ever owned so I want to keep it running. Thanks in advance for your answer, which I would truly appreciate!

Changing the oil pan is definitely a fairly involved process on these, as I believe it does involve dropping the front differential and axles (the front portion of the 4WD system) in order to remove the oil pan. My GV was totalled a few years ago so I haven't been under one in some time, but $865 doesn't sound awful for the job. You can always get a repair quote from a Japanese auto specialist as well if you have one in your area and want a second opinion. The part itself is listed at around $80 for the lower pan and $215 for the upper, but that is before import or dealer markup, just for reference. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly; I really do appreciate it! I am sorry to learn that your GV was totaled. It looked really well cared for in your video. I also wanted to let you know that I am relieved to see that you believe $865 doesn't sound too bad for the job. I suspected that major parts would have to be moved to get at the pan, but thought it would be good to get this confirmed by someone like yourself who would be familiar with that vehicle.

@@curtisnorman2190 What ever happened to this situation? I rounded off the edges of the plug on my ram once. I took it to the dealership and they punched a hole in the pan. Cost me like 600 if I remember correctly.

The engine bay on the 3.2L is bloody tight, this looks like the 2.7L. My Toyota Starlet GT 1.3L engine was a dream to work on compared to this thing. Just about to do the filter on my GV and I think I need snake arms to get in there.

I used a strap wrench, but if worst comes to worst, you can stick a long screwdriver through the filter - not recommended, but if you have to.

Changing oil on this car is like taking a trip down to hades and then back, it never gets better, no matter how much you think it will. One tip i found is to pre oil my arm as I reach up, I kid you not. Having faith helps.

I'll try that next time. I used to drain the oil before removing the filter, but with some new vehicles, the filters are so hard to get to that I'm afraid I may drop the filter into the oil drain pan as I work.

redonKiLaus you don’t need the oil filter even if it doesn’t fall into the pan. You have to install a new one with every oil change.

You can get synthetic oil in pretty much any weight. I run Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5W30 in my Suzuki here in Arizona, but in Canada, I would definitely run something a bit thinner. I believe I used to run 0W30 during winter when I lived in a colder climate. For you, I would probably recommend 0W30 for winter and 5W30 for summer. Thanks for watching!

@redonKiLaus10 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, since Suzuki exited the North American market, these parts are unobtainable. For the drain plug gaskets, you can simply purchase metric ones at an auto parts store, since they are just copper washers on this vehicle. The clips that hold the skid plates on can also be found at auto parts stores, but you can purchase variety packs on Amazon as well that include numerous sizes and both interior and exterior types, at very attractive prices. Thanks for watching!

Yep, other vehicles I own have drain plugs at slight angles, but never completely sideways like this. I've only seen this orientation on dry-sump oil systems in supercars and race cars, never a normal road car, let alone a stock SUV. Thanks for watching!
