Looks very nice!! The clear lower parts not only got grime in them over the years but they also all turned a horrid reddish color. The car looks much cleaner and modern with all the lamps being new shiny and the lower clear parts having that nice silver/clear look to them. When I got my 97 S500 this was the very first thing i did the same day I bought it. The 97-99 model years also did away with the amber colored blinker tops and went to the white/silver look to better match the bottoms. W140 was and still is my favorite car ever. But after just over 300,000 miles on the clock I traded it in for 2013 S550.

Yep, freshening the lamps definitely makes a big difference. The original lights in these cars were actually tinted the pinkish hue from factory according to most of the parts sources I've consulted - interesting choice by MB. The W140 is quite the car, though I am on the hunt for a later model S65 to complement this old one myself. Thanks for watching!

redonKiLaus what’s funny though is in all the old mb promos and photos the lights didn’t have that red hue at all. Where the red count came from had always been one of the great wonders of Mercedes Benz lol. It’s like there was some odd ball thing that happened. ULO was always the supplier for the w140 from the beginning. But yes so many have wondered did they come that way or was there something in the plastic that discolored that way. But we can all agree the silver bottom looks way way better! I wish I still had my old Benz. But when you get the s65 get a vid posted up! That’s a beast of a car!

@@garrettdodson6110 Yep, I have the original sales documentation and most shows clear. There are some pics in the sales brochure (actually, hardcover book for the '95 S-Class) that look pinkish, but who knows. IIRC I came across two P/Ns in the MB parts catalog that defined the coloring, hence why I delved deeper into the origin. The S65 will definitely make an appearance once purchased. It's a matter of finding a good one local to me that I can easily inspect myself. Thankfully, there are a reasonable number of them in my locale.

redonKiLaus there’s a book just for the 95 s class !! Wow would love to see it? Wonder if it’s still around anywhere to be found.

Any idea why the license plate light doesn't turn on? Really weird thing was I played around with some leds for the brake lights and the license plate lights would turn on when I pressed the brakes! But I switched the brake lights back to the correct ones and the license plate doesn't come on at all. Fuses are all good bulbs are all good...

Sounds like something is plugged into the wrong spot, or you may have some wiring harness funkiness going on (which happens on these with the biodegradable insulation Mercedes used on the wire insulation back then). Hope that helps narrow it down some!

Why do you need to pull the bulbs out from back plate? Can it be pulled all together with bulbs in place?
@redonKiLaus3 жыл бұрын
I think it can, but makes alignment more difficult. It's been so long since I took this apart I don't remember off the top of my head. Thanks for watching!

Hello, You can just remove the back plate with the bulbs and holders. I just did it earlier today. When replacing it, take care to make sure that the mounting studs are all poking fully through to the inside.

The center light is THE MOST DIFFICULT thing to remove.......for some reason Mercedes thought it pertinent to place the chassis around the bolts and place access holes that barely any common tool can get too, what was I thinking assuming this would be any easy replacement, each tail light.....super easy.....center tail light can suck my nuts

It's not the easiest thing in the world, but I didn't find it to be too terrible - once I figured everything out it took about 15 minutes to swap with the proper tools. Thanks for watching!
