Bergeron as a third line center behind Crosby and Malkin would have been a waste of his talent, he either wouldn’t have gotten enough ice time to develop or been traded to fill other roster needs once he needed to be paid what he’s worth. I’d still want Fleury if for nothing else than sentimental reasons.
@Swoop187OG1872 жыл бұрын
Usually even if I disagree with Shannon/THG I can understand his perspective - but I cant here with him taking Staal over Bergeron at #2, lol - that makes no sense to me - IMO, Bergeron is the more complete player and overall is way ahead of Staal in every aspect er attribute that makes or breaks a hockey player.... As far as Marc-Andre Fleury - I agree he should go First Overall but keep in mind - It took Fleury a while to really cement himself as worthy of that First Overall selection - I mean he was a late bloomer and looked like a bust early on in his career.. I mean obviously it takes goalies much longer to develop than skaters but for a while there it really looked like the Pens wasted that First Overall pick... Also, when Fleury was drafted it appeared that the Penguins were really trying to rush him instead of allowing him to develop at his own pace, but for the sake of Fleury (perhaps even with the firing of Eddie O) they stopped trying that and DID let Fleury develop slowly and progressively.... I mean I remember when Fleury was drafted - he did not look good at all, he was wet behind the hears, lol - but keep in mind the Pens were a terrible team back then too, but Fleury's lack of experience stuck out like a sore thumb, lol... Buy yea - all of these years later - I have no issue with Fleury being the top choice - but Staal at #2, yea I just don't agree with that at all - Bergeron is the better player and I don't think anyone could convince me otherwise - Bergeron is a complete player and a leader - he's the type of guy that can help any team win a Cup so Bergeron brings a lot to the table - he's one of his eras best 2-way players...
@jesseshore38732 жыл бұрын
I think I’m the rare Fleury naysayer, people go he has three cups, another finals, but literally every place he’s played he has been replaced as starter, 2 of those cups he was their backup behind Matt Murray, he at no point in his career was the best goalie in the league, he was always outplayed by Ryan Miller, Roberto Luongo, and Carey Price. He’s a great goalie and a great guy (and he gets the nice guy bump, everyone loves him so they think higher of him as a player). But considering how insanely tough the hall of fame is on goalies (in the last 22 years the only goalies selected are Roy, Belfour, Hasek, Vachon, Brodeur, Kim St-Pierre, and Luongo) unless you’re one of the greatest of all time you either don’t get selected or have to wait years like Vachon.
@Dr.Frankensteen2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Murray was the goalie for those back to back years. But keep in mind, in 2017 Murray was hurt and Fleury almost singlehandedly got them to the 3rd round when Murray was healthy. As far as being replaced everywhere he goes, that's only happened once because of his play and that was Pittsburgh. In Vegas, he was superior to Lehner but only signed 1 year instead of 4 when he was traded and higher cap hit. He was great for Vegas and won Vezina that season. He's taken over the starting job in Minnesota. So effectively he was only replaced once.

Arguably, Fleury’s greatest NHL accomplishment is hoodwinking the hockey world at large into thinking he’s had a Hall of Fame worthy career. It took until his 15th season (in a shortened year mind you) for him to gain his first Vezina finalist nod (and win). Likewise his one and only All-Star appearance. Led the league in just a single statistical category once across 18 seasons. There’s value in having a long career where teams find you worthy enough for the starting job, but he’s getting in solely based off of team accomplishments (Wins and Cups) and a small sample size where he was good in Vegas. Has had the benefit of having a decision in virtually every game of his career (hence why he’s now third in Wins since he only dealt with a mere two ties in his first season). He was replaced by Murray in 2 of his 3 Pittsburgh Cup runs (he played less than 80 mins in 2016 and he was pulled in Game 3 of the ECF after letting up 4 goals in barely more than half of the first period and never played for Pittsburgh again). What other goalie in history has received full credit for 2 Cup wins when they got pulled? They won their first in spite of him. They flamed out early numerous times because of him. But hey, congrats. There’s no doubt he’ll be in the Hall of Fame since he’s so likable. Right place at the right time.

Never understood the Weber slander. Guy was a Norris caliber defenseman who was snubbed year after year. He seems like he’s probably the hardest defenseman to play against.

I find it interesting that you take a look at the past as a whole for this redraft but in the 2015 one you basically gambled on what players may do in the future and prioritized that over known, established careers since 2016. I'm still going to say, Kaprisov missed 4 out of the 6 years in between that draft and now, and I think it should have factored into his placement. To a GM, getting a player that is almost as good and is still a top 10 player 4 years earlier is worth a lot more than waiting. It affects cup odds and seeding for the playoffs. It can affect jerseys, ticket sales and other things much earlier. I genuinely think picks #2 and #3 still go to Rantanen and Marner for this reason - their past is simply much better as both of them have had 4 years where they were over a point per game players. I also think Colorado and Toronto would redraft the same players over Kaprisov, even knowing what they know now. With Kaprisov, you're basically betting that he's going to continue along that trajectory despite having only 1 top 10 season (something you said you wouldn't do for this draft, and that's still less than Rantanen and Marner). Minnesota was really punished for not having Kaprisov 4 years earlier. They could have really used him. I just don't think it's right or correct to dismiss 2015-2019 as if they don't matter when real benefits were gained in Colorado and Toronto during this time. I just hope this makes you more aware of how your criteria is shifting. I think the 2005 redraft criteria is better, and 2015 should have had the same criteria. Kaprisov should only be drafted by a team where the next best player is significantly worse and waiting 4 years is worth the wait. I just don't think there's enough upside with Kaprisov to justify waiting 4 entire years for many teams picking at the top of the draft, especially since we don't know how the rest of his career turns out. And yes, that even assumes we think he is the best player out of the 3 in 2021.
@csolivais19792 жыл бұрын
This re-draft is different becuse a lot of these players are retired or just about to. The 2015 one, they are in their prime or just about there. So this re-draft is based on their entire career, whereas the 2015 one would be if they were all draft eligible again, who would you draft for this upcoming season. So Kaprisove (sorry for the spelling) missing 4 years wouldn't really be a factor.
@Katie-hb8iq2 жыл бұрын
@@csolivais1979 So are you saying Toronto or Colorado draft Kaprisov and delay their rebuilds for 4 years? Are you saying if Minnesota were picking 2nd that it would be correct to pass on Marner or Rantanen knowing Kaprisov won't play for you in 4 years? Another way to think of this, in 6 years, Kaprisov got 0 points in 4 out of those 6 years while Marner and Rantanen were getting over a point per game, and 2 of those years they were top 10 players. Kaprisov's rookie year was not better than the other two, so why are you putting so much weight on Kaprisov's 2021 season compared to two players with stellar 6-year careers?
@csolivais19792 жыл бұрын
@@Katie-hb8iq no, they wouldn't delay anything. Basically in Shannon's redraft, everyone who was drafted that year are now able to be drafted again for this upcoming season. So knowing what you know about each player, what order are you drafting them? Obviously McDavid goes first. Then who? Basically the past matters as a guide to who you draft, but that's it. Nobody has to wait 4 years for him to come, becuse he is here already.
@Katie-hb8iq2 жыл бұрын
@@csolivais1979 Rantanen #2 and Marner #3 because both teams know their franchise will be significantly better in 2019 compared to waiting for Kaprisov. And that is fully knowing that they are passing on a player that is 2-5% better in 2021 (6 entire years later). I would take Kaprisov if it meant that the next available player was at least 30-40 points per season worse. It might be worth passing and waiting the 4 years in that case, because the quality of available players has gone done quite a bit. But to wait 4 years over Marner or Rantanen? That's not optimal. These are top 10 NHL players and you get them 4 years sooner. I am 100% certain if you asked Sakic or Dubas, would they have drafted Kaprisov knowing everything they knew now over Marner and Rantanen, and they would still choose Marner and Rantanen. 100%

I'd put Moulson over Enstrom, honestly. Moulson was a legit top 6 guy who put up a lot of goals for a few seasons. For me, he was more prolific as an NHLer than Enstrom. Plus, the Blues probably could have used a good scorer during that era.

Getting a bit picky here but doubt the Islanders take Halak while they still had DiPietro in net. But you never know. Similar issue to what you mentioned with NJ. Also think you undervalued Seabrook and Vanek, but just goes to show how stacked this draft really was. Thanks for the great video!
@csolivais19792 жыл бұрын
I've never understood that with goalies, especially now.in the salary cap era, where good players on entry level contracts are gold. Even if you have an elite goalie, a goalie you draft is probably going to spend a year or 2 in junior/AHL. Then a year or 2 as a back up. Leaves you with potentially 2 good goalies, one on a cheap contract.
@MK-ji9ke2 жыл бұрын
I'm not a Chicago fan but... Crawford and Seabrook should be higher. Crawford has a better record than Halak and Seabrook/Keith was a dominant pairing for Chicago. Seabrook is unfortunate to be more defensively minded and thus over-looked for the Norris. I'd definitely choose him over Suter but mixed about whether to pick him over Burns or Weber.

Not an especially strong draft year. Only Staal (78th) and Bergeron (98th) in the top 100 in points. Getzlaff 49th in assists and 132nd in PPG. Bergeron is one of the best two-way players ever, so I'd probably have him #1. Weber, Burns and Suter are good top ten picks for defensemen. Fleury had a couple magical seasons, but I'm not sure his career numbers make him a first ballot HoFer. Quite a few had solid lengthy careers but how many of them will get into the HoF? This year's forward inductees all outscored Staal and I'm pretty sure he's done in the NHL.

Nobody should argue Dustin Brown should be any higher. He had some good moments, did help win cups, but he peaked at 33 goals and 61 points and had a significant decline (with a couple random bounceback seasons) in the past 10 years. Brown was far out of his prime 9 years into his career.

Im glad we got him at 13 and without his lead wouldn’t have those ahem “good moments”. As for later years he was still hitting cleam with the bestof them on the 3rd 4th line as ateam player and a great leader to the youths coming up in our ranks, aslo a pretty good streak of games played without injury too. New York might have taken him with his family ties to the state, but im sure glad they did’nt. Looking forward to his banner raised this season in retirement.
