Been watching a lot of Buffalo this year and Dahlin with Samuelsson reminds me so much of Letang with Dumoulin in Pitt for the past 6 years. Samuelsson's steady defensive presence and ability to win battles around his own net has really let Dahlin shine on offense. Even if Samuelsson never hits 10 goals or 25 points (like Dumo) just being able to unlock Dahlin's potential is massive. Dumo signed at 5.5% of the cap and has been worth it up until his age 31 season, and that's despite still taking up over 5% while the cap was flat for 3 years. Samuelsson is gonna be a steal at 5.2% at signing and likely getting below 4.9% by age 24. It's not pure coincidence that the Sabres are 22-9-3 with Samuelsson and 4-10-1 without this year.

Matias Samuelsson was indeed a steal in the second round for the Sabres. A BIG reason why they are in playoff contention. When he got hurt earlier in the year, they had a 8 game losing streak. Not a coincidence. A pure defensive defenseman, appears to be on his way to becoming a really good NHL top pair defenseman. The perfect guy to pair with your elite offensive defenseman, like Dahlin. Dahlin is going to compete for the Norris most years because Samuelsson allows him to go on adventures, and Matias doesn't seem to care if he gets any recognition for it.

If the Canes didn't have Jordan Staal, Kotkaniemi would be an ideal 3C. He wins faceoffs, he wins board battles, he's a great cycle/grind/forecheck player and he backchecks very well. That long reach of his really serves him well. Notice that Brind'Amour has just recently started putting him in on the #2 PP and PK units. That's a sign of trust. He's playing well.

He’s got good mentors, and he’ll be in the playoffs. Bergevin actually did them a double service cause Aho’s deal turned out to be a really good one. Who’d they sign instead’of Kk? Only 5 more years of Gallaghers contract!

Yeah, I'd definitely be taking Bouchard muuuch earlier than that, probably right after Dobson. He's a high action player, and when he's on the ice a lot of good and a decent amount of bad is happening. But as far as the Oilers defense goes he's the only one who's actually passable at 5on5 (and the underlying numbers seem to show it). This season his totals have been down but he's still taking plenty of shots and for a guy not on the powerplay he's done decent. I wouldn't be shocked if by the end of the year he finishes with 30 points and doesnt sacrifice his defense.

Bouchard has no defense. When draft happened I was so happy with pick. Dale Hunter had said how much hockey smarts he had. Hunter lied to us. I don't like giving up on young defense men but with Evan I have

Samuelsson gets some well-deserved love here. I couldn’t help but laugh at people thinking he didn’t deserve his 7y/30m contract because of points and he only played 50-some games. He still makes mistakes here and there but he is going to be one of the best defensive d-men soon.

Romanov wasn’t traded out of Montréal due to any underlying issues. They got a 13th overall for him, and immediately flipped that for Kirby Dach. If there was ever a good demonstration of buy low sell high in a hockey context, this turned out great for Montréal. Romanov is a very good defenseman, he’ll be an NHLer for a very long time, and MTL went completely off the board picking him. But he’s a second pairing defenseman, while Kirby Dach is establishing himself as a 1st liner who can just as much be a good playmaker as he can complement Suzuki and Caufield. Do you trade Romanov, a 3rd and a 4th for Dach? It was a cautious yes at the time, and it’s a no-brained today.

I'm still mad about this draft as a Detroit fan. Most places had us picking Hughes on their mock drafts, it made sense after all we needed a D-man. But Ken just had to get Zadina instead cause "he can score goals" well I certainly haven't seen those goals. I remember watching Kennys interview after he drafted and just being so mad at him once again ignoring what the team needed. He was horrible at drafting.

One of the things that stood out to me about Jonatan Berggren very early into his time with the Wings this year was his hockey IQ. He's a balanced all around player that gets a boost from how good he is at making the smart, safe, or creative play at the right time. If the Wings were better this year and he were putting up a few more points, the Wings might have rookie of the year 2 years in a row.

The very rare redraft that has a Flyer move up the board as opposed to so many others when no player Philly drafted that year even makes your first round. Exciting. I expect Fletcher will trade him and 8 draft picks for a slow defenseman, who he will sign to an 8x6 or something.

Wahlstrom has definitely been held back by the isles’ system. I do think, if he were to return this season, playing on a line with horvat and barzal could free up a lot of space for him to carry the puck more and give him more time to aim his shots.

Bernard Docker has been quite good actually. He doesn't score, that's not his role, but he is very consistent defensively. Management has sent him down probably to get him playing more, but he genuinely should be a mainstay soon.

My honest answer on Zadina is he shouldn't have gone at 5, but there's still a chance he changes his game to not be what we expected him to be. If you had told me two years ago Rasmussen would be as solid as he is now I don't know if I would believe you. Overall Zadina was a bad pick and it has put pressure on him to succeed that is not helping him whatsoever, but he still has a chance of being a decent player.

Yea Hughes was available, but even if we didn't pick Zadina it was reports saying that Ken Holland was targeting either Bouchard or Noah Dobson. And if we picked Quinn there no guarantee he would put up the same numbers cus he would not have been protected in detroit like he is in Vancouver. And if we do take Quinn, we may not have taken Moritz. I Seider in next years draft.

Tkachuk has been a steal for Ottawa at #4. And in retrospect a big oooof by Montreal for not taking him. Imagine if they had him with Caufield and Suzuki in the Finals a couple years ago... They probably would have still lost, but put up a better fight.

How tf is Addison that low? I was gonna say something about some other picks but that one really sticks out to me. Good PP QB, decent enough at EV and not as bad defensively as his reputation would lead you to believe. By no means a defensive stud at all, but just his game right now deserves more praise than this. And potential wise? Yeah, he definitely deserves to be higher than 21st

The Habs did ok with Romanov and Harris.. But Kotkaniemi at 3 and then rushing him in the big league next year is all we gonna remember from that draft.
