When the LFA was new they had one doing the rounds at Lexus dealerships. My brother and I went in to the Elizabeth Street dealership in Melbourne for a look and a bloke came out to show us over the car. Let us sit in it, opened and shut everything, pressed every button and then he fired it up and nearly blew the windows out of the joint rev bombing it for us. He must have spent 20 minutes with us two yobbos who were obviously nowhere near ever going to buy it. When we left he gave me his card. He was the dealer principal. Amazing. At a Ferrari showroom the receptionist wouldn't have even acknowledged us let alone let us sit in a car. What a legend that bloke was. Made two more Lexus fans that day. Amazing car, the LFA.

+1 for the Honda Jazz. I bought a 2006 model with all the kilometers on it for $1,800 earlier this year to help me move an all motorcycle household with the intention of reselling it once I was done. Four months later & there's a third of my motorcycle collection on the chopping block & listed for sale to make room for the little Jazz nugget in the garage. It's such a practical little thing I can't bring myself to get rid of it. It's so practical that a mate who has a dual cab Hilux asked me to help him pick up a table that wouldn't fit in the back of his ute & the little Jazz swallowed it whole.

Those first gen Honda Jazzi hide a dirty little secret or two, first, they all like to leak water at the seams around the hatch hinge area (easy fix) Second secret is, they are simply a wheel and tyre upgrade away from quite the track car, like who knew? The wooden feeling steering that loves to refuse to self centre at low speed turns into sharp, class leading steering when pushed hard. Drive one on standard tyres, and never push it hard through the corners, you'de never ever know. A Yaris feels superior driving at 5 to 6 tenths, a JazziFitty is in another league at 7 to 10 10ths. Also of course, the amount of crap they can "fit" in, outstanding.

Great episode guys. I moved out of a 2002 Camry V6 touring wagon after 22 years which had 335000 KMs as I have now retired. Nothing wrong with the Camry, always serviced and NO major mechanical issues.( Yes batteries, alternators and services! But the fuel cost and minor issues( remote locking, antenna etc) made me regretfully sell. I bought a 2020 Corolla touring hybrid wagon from Go Garage. A brilliant car and saving me up to $50 per week in fuel. Let me know if you want to show it in a future vid. Keep up the great work. Cheers, Carl

3 things … 1. Excellent content as usual … 2. For client confidentiality sake yeah do note the rego of that broken Octavia was clearly visible .. 3. I owned a Kizashi - agree in manual form that would easily be the equal of the Accord Euro … but unfortunately the CVT in mine (fast changing manual mode aside) dulled the heck out of the car, and the one deal breaker for me was how slow it was in engaging reverse and back to drive again when rushed to park quickly in shopping centres. The ride was also jiggly at best but I think I would have forgiven that if in manual form.

Love my 2019 Mazda 6 GT wagon. Beautiful to drive, super-reliable and looks great in grey on big alloys. I have a family of 4 but find SUVs too ‘floaty’ and a bit dull. If you want a sporty looking/feeling family car it has to be a wagon 😊

The Lexus LC 500 is a special build line. The workers so nothing but the LC500. MY Skyline had a Prince in front of it. Grey body with a dark blue top and orange strip. Twin, Triple DCOE 40mm Webbers and had a hidden switch that turned plow understeer into snap oversteer at 150kph. I recorded 137mph down Conrod Strait in 1968. I could still see, hear and recover from a hangover in less then 20 hours then. But yes Adam, almost any wagon looks great with a slight drop. My Skoda Wagon has just had a complete engine rebuild so I understand the feeling the owner of the Octavia must be feeling right now. Great video guys.

My quick list: Small car - Swift Sport (not really in the sports car category, better looking and more fun than any of those mentioned). Small SUV - RAV4 Gen 1, import with beams engine preferred. CX3. Or, hear me out (because I reckon this will be on the do-not-buy list), Nissan Juke. But MUST be 1.6T and manual. CVT is garbage, but the manual 1.6T is a hoot and yeah polarising looks when it came out etc. BUT honestly those are like the weird JDM models we never get but were actually sold here. Only small Japanese SUV with some spice sold here. Lastly, Vitara Turbo. Cracking good little car. Look sharp without being silly. Practical, efficient, reliable, fun, super light. Fabulous little car. ‘Medium’ (whatever that is as it seemed to skip the Corolla class entirely - Accord Euro, Mazda 3 (the newest one), Blade Master G, Altezza. Medium SUV - I dunno, they all seem pretty dreary. Have that Rukus over about any of them. V6 RAV4 I guess. Actually probably the 2 Gen body CRV like AK bought for a bit. They’re rad and cheap. Large car - Lexus IS-F. Large SUV - Like, I dunno, FJ cruiser or a 90 series Prado maybe. Sports cars - MX5. S2000. NSX. 240Z. Celica GT4. S800. S660. MR2 Spider. Crazy - Toyota GT2000.

Honestly expected the majority of the cars on this list, but I was surprised that the Toyota Century wasn't mentioned as a pick to buy. I quite often see many Kizashis driving around town and was one of only 2 cars that were a surprise on the list. The other suprise car was the Rukus as I recently saw one in the metal in base spec but in a dark blue and it was honestly impressive too see. The GT2000 that was used in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice actually had too be made into a convertible as Sean Connery was too tall for it making the only convertible version of it in the world. Great video guys and as always keep up the good work guys and look forward to next week's videos as per usual 👍.

Hoorah for the Outback! Call me a glutton for punishment, but my driveway is full of Alfas and Subarus and I wouldn't have it any other way. The wife has a 2019 Forester (our third), while I've got two Alfas ('81 GTV and '02 156 GTA which til a month ago was my daily) and a freshly acquired gen2 '02 Outback 2.5 manual. Bought solely as a cheap daily to flog on the work run, its done over 250,000km - but everything works (inc AC and windows), the headgaskets were replaced with MLS ones at the same time as the timing belt was done and a heavy duty clutch and single mass flywheel fitted about 30,000km ago. Man I love this thing: with its 2" lift kit, HD offroad tyres, spotties, bullbar and CB. All acquired for the princely sum of $1800 with rego paid til end of January.

I've got a 2002 3.5L V6 NM Pajero in the GLX (Pov Pack) trim and honestly love it. The vehicle has 313,000km on it and was not maintained well prior to me owning it and even I have neglected it a bit so it is costing me in repairs from things wearing out. It handles everything I want to throw at it, it is very comfortable on & off road, heaps of room, a great LSD, Not bad on fuel when compared to some other Petrol 4wd's and over all it is very practical. The community around the Pajero as well is amazing, if I need some advice on how to fix something I can always get it and very often I get people putting their hands up to physically come and help me. I have a bloke coming later today to help me install a new crank angle sensor, yesterday he helped me replace my engine mounts. Another vehicle in the small - mid SUV is the Ford Escape ZB. My wife has one of them in the 4cyl version and it is a beautiful car to drive, heaps of space, enough power and loads of comfort. It is AWD with a front bias but does have a 4wd button to engage a Centre Diff Lock. She wont let me take it off road though lol.

One of my all time favs however are not a car (well...any rotary) to recommend to a non car person.. requires commitment or it will be the most unreliable car you'll ever own.. and yes, I own an Rx8 and its sensational but would never recommend it to someone with zero mechanical understanding or unwillingness to commit to the Rotary system of ownership. - if you can do that, you have a reliable car :-)

I bought a used a Honda Jazz 2nd Gen with the CVT for my first car, it was smooth but developed a bearing noise from the gearbox with less than 80,000 miles. People forget the service interval for the CVT gearbox is 2 years only. Extremely disappointing, a part from that everything worked including the panoramic glass which made the car feel huge on the inside.

My wife owned a Gen 2 Highlander (same as the Kluger), and while it never left us stranded, we did have a lot of issues with oil leaks. Valve cover gaskets and the timing chain cover twice. It was an 08. I’m sure they fixed that issue with later models, but it seems like a fair number of Toyotas around that time with the 3.5 had those issues.

I don't know if you had/have the Nissan Primera P12 (2003-2007) in Asutralia, but they are selling dirt cheap in Europe and are generally reliable cars with mainly small annoying issues = the best bang for the buck Japanese older cars. I see them on sale with +400.000Km and fresh MOT. I bought a 2007 1.8L full spec Primera with leather interior, color reversing camera, active cruise control, rain sensor, auto dimming mirrors.... with only 134.000 Km for 1000€. Unbeatable value for very little money. Just one thing to keep in mind, the 1.8L (QG18DE) engine suffers from the same issue as many Toyota's = it burns oil but its just how that engine is. The 1.6L (QG16DE) variant has a very weak gearbox. The 2.0L QR engine has cam chain issues. So the best alternative is the 1.8L burns some oil, but has a stronger gearbox and no known chronic cam chain issues.

Kizashi has the J24 engine which is a bit of a pile of junk compared to most Suzuki engines. You don’t get them coming through not because they’re reliable, but because there aren’t many of them around. Dynamically they were better than the Accord Euro, but engine and weight was a huge letdown. Interesting, but not one to be on the ‘buy’ list.

$50k for a DC2R is bonkers… I had an immaculate JDM ‘98 spec in nighthawk black, sold it for $10k NZ back in 2010 or so, I regret selling that one. It was written off by the new owner 2 weeks after I sold it. Who’s paying $150k for a Impreza type R? What the hell. I paid $15k for mine. Another regretted sale. Jazz is a solid pick for small car, Accord euro for medium, LS400/430/Celsior or Crown of any variant for large car, Forester for suv/cuv. I like the space of the Forester over its rivals, and some models are available with a 6 speed.

Oooohhhh!! This is exciting. I was thinking of stuff like this yesterday as I drove past two people I know who have been driving the same old Hilux for at least 20 years, and those hiluxs they did not get until they were over 10 years old. My 80 series LandCruiser is about to tick over to 30 years old in January 2025. I paid $20k for it about 8 or 9 years ago. Manual and 1HD-FT engine. It's got super cold air, good cruise control. Yes it has required careful maintenance, but that maintenance bill over those years of my ownership plus the purchase price still comes in under the cost of a modern wagon or 4wd ute, and it's more capable off road when I get the chance. I spend the vast majority my time in a tow truck, and like Jim, if everyone drove boring Toyotas, I'd not be out of work, but I'd be part time at best.
@MattBlack6
@MattBlack6 8 күн бұрын
Caveat, I wouldn't recommend an 80 series to anyone unless you got it at a great price and it was immaculate, which I did. Analyzing what they are actually saying... Everything that Jim is saying is useful and based on real life experience and is helpful to me deciding what to buy. Everything the other guy is saying is not useful at all, often exactly opposite of what is an actual fact, it's his own impersonation of JC from top gear or his own opinion of the looks of the car. It all doubles up the length of the video. Does Jim Hull have his own channel?

I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch of the then-new Lexus GS back in the early 20-teens and it was being held at a private circuit up on the central coast. What I wasn't expecting was for Lexus to have an LFA there too. Though we weren't allowed to sit in it, they did have it do a few laps with a racing driver behind the wheel. O M G ... . It was a lot of fun to drive too with the smooth and revy 2.0 dohc engine with ample power. Handled and gripped and had a lovely manual gearbox typical of Jap cars. Totally reliable too.
