At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.
We’d love nothing more than for you to give us as much feedback as possible, so we can make this channel the best it can be.

Bit late but I was only introduced to this channel recently. I have owned a 2004 patrol with the 3 liter engine for over 10 years now, awesome car, loved mostly every minute. There are cup holders in the back seat you just have to fold down the back armrest. The only bad point about the car is the front cup-holders. I think you could fit two of those really thin energy drink cans in them but not much else. I have an aftermarket one that fits in beautifully.

I have 3d printed a unit that goes over the factory shitty cupholders and gives you better cupholders (you can find it in thingiverse). It is not perfect but its a thousand times better than without it. I will probably end up designing something specifically for my needs (my water bottle is a 1 liter one, so it doesnt fit even in the new ones)

I have the 02 GU 3.0 and I run cas evac in Donbas Ukraine. This is a rough tractor and very hard on my body on normal roads, in the mod and bump and I need power and speed, and torque( a lot of towing in the mud) it’s the best! My 06 3.2 Pajaro got blown up in August, it was so comfortable and with the off road tires it was almost as good. This patrol was donated to me, the American actually gave me a choice of model. Looking back, I’d have another Pajaro! Just for comfort and convenience inside the cab.

A good review, thanks for that. I have a 2008 CRD 3.0L auto that I bought in 2011 as an ex NSW Police vehicle at 62,000 km. It’s a DX hence only a 5 seater and has vinyl floor and not carpet which suits me fine. It now has 163,500 km and has towed our camper on long trips to the Oz outback. It’s a great car on the open road and outback but a bit of a beast to maneuver around supermarket car parks. I service it myself apart from the auto transmission that I outsource to a specialist garage. It came with plastic roo bar, winch, driving lights, second battery and tow bar already fitted for the NSW Police (they did remove the blues and twos and the police decals though). I have fitted a Safari snorkel, rear suspension airbags and an extra front tow point but nothing more. My wife is happy driving it and towing the trailer on outback trips. There is a lot of bad press about the early ZD30 engine until Nissan upped the oil sump capacity to 8.2L around 2004. A number have grenaded or blown up due to lack of oil. The 3L engine is OK but a bit more power from a bigger engine would not go amiss and I do really like the auto transmission even though it is only a 4 speed. Being auto lowers the GVM to 3020kg and towing to 2500kg compared to the 5 speed manual 3500kg and 3000kg correspondingly but I manage. Previously I owned a 1996 2.8L TD GQ Y60 manual Patrol which was stolen from the driveway in 2011. Only 175,000 km on the clock and never seen again I guess it went for parts seeing as the running gear is the same as on the Y61 GU Patrols. The 2.8 turbo diesel was a gutless engine compared to the ZD30 common rail. Even so it was comfortable to drive in the outback. Very happy with my patrols but I will not be buying the latest Y62 V8 petrol since I am not prepared to carry extra petrol in jerry cans for outback travel. I have always carried extra diesel in jerry cans on the camper trailer. I hope my comments are helpful to any prospective Patrol buyers.

As a daily driver it's not so bad. I drive a 2005 y61 zd30 in the UK. Crowded roads, ok need a little extra parking room, but overall whether motorway, town or country road it is no drama. Load space is great and high driving position is an advantage. Unfortunately, the nearest we have to off roading is negotiating the millions of pot holes in England. However, given the chance to explore the outback, I wouldn't want to do this in any other car. Buy one, you won't regret it.

The first time because it had 400,000kms as a zd30, 2nd time because I had 70psi of boost on the sand dunes. And now it’s a Barra, fairly stock ba motor. Makes 250hp which in a patrol isn’t a lot but it makes plenty of torque for a petrol. And for 4wding, they’re good

I didnt watch any of the video but are you serious asking that question in the title of your video? You might be new to the world of 4wds but GU’s are very sought after in the used market & reasonably affordable. I’m a Toyota man but the Patrol would be a smart purchase for a used 4wd. They’re excellent as a blank canvas & there’s a ton of aftermarket bolt ons available. If you want a capable 4wd it’s hard to look past. The 3.0L might be lacking a bit of excitement but it’s a heavy 4wd wagon. You don’t buy them to break land speed records. I thought that was obvious enough.

I had a pair of GU iii Patrols, an ST coil cab and a 4.2 TD wagon. Only issue I had was the wagon lost 5th gear ( a common issue with that gearbox) . I fitted a gear master overdrive kit, a great modification, especially for long distance travel. The ZD30 engines in the GU4 weren't bad when new, but expect the head to crack and need replacement around the 300,000 km mark. Another issue is the VP44 injector pump, when it fails, a reconditioned pump will be around $3500, plus fitting.

So far so good with mine! Only had it for two years. (2012 GU Y61 only 122,000kms). Love the space and it's a very comfortable ride. The less tech the better for an off-road vehicles (less issues to worry about in the middle of nowhere). Form follows function, and this vehicle has very practical features for four-wheel driving. In comparison I sat in a jeep for ten minutes, and as flashy as all the new tech was, it seemed so plastic, cosmetic and unnecessary for an off-road vehicle - maybe I just like the old school stuff better. The Patrol feels solid in comparison. There is only one thing that is puzzling me - if early zd30 common rail engines are so poor and prone to blowing up, how could any be still available and operational? There were issues with Nissan oil level recommendations in the past, which most likely contributed to this engine failure. Even later models should fill up around 8.5 to 8.7ltr, which is more than the 8.2ltr recommendation. Enjoyed the vid, as many valid points 👍

my td42 gu Just maintenance things like full servicing every 5000km, brakes, wheel bearings hubs and seals, rear main seal, thermostats, 33” a/t tires, starter motors batteries and alternators. Major problems I’ve had 5th gear shaft broke around 320,000km leaving me $1500 out of pocket for a new gearbox-new gearbox was gq/gu hybrid model for a gu (beefier gears and shafts from gq in gu housing) Injector pump went around 280,000km and with new injectors it set me back arms and legs at a diesel specialist. Next issue is replacing the suspension (preventative maintenance) I’ve been around Australia in my ute a few times and it’s been off road on the tracks, beaches you name it 2001 td42 dx gu ute almost 500,000km on the clock

Looking to buy? Zd30 Injector pumps start to fail around 200,000 and are a prick to find / replace and will cost $$$$, If it’s hasn’t been done by previous owner expect to do it yourself. Check NADS or at least a catch can has been done. Pre common rail (DI) version were fairly much sorted by 2004, early common rails had their own sets of issues too. Check your glow plugs have been done (should be done at 100,000km I believe), original ceramic head ones can fail and when they do parts can journey into the piston and cause complete failure.

I live in Romania, I started with a Suzuki Samurai from 1988 as my off-road car. I managed to travel with it a lot and do light to medium off-road. After 5 years I wanted a modern car with AC, big, safe and reliable for long roads and overlanding. The european Y61 GU4 was my choice. What can I say? The zd30 engine is something of luck ( the non CRDI one) and the chassis is a complete joke. I have seen over 50 patrol's and all of them had a lot of rust on their chassis. For a car that is this big I am disappointed concerning the interior space: VW Sharan has more space and it is a smaller vehicle overall. Concerning safety: I don't care about simulation: I rolled over 3 times at 90Km/h with a GU4 and survived with just a few scratches: no roll cage or something, almost stock Patrol. My conclusion is that the Patrol is over hyped: it has bad and slow engine ( at least in Europe) and plenty of rust on the chassis for its age plus a lot of minor engineering decisions that seems to have no logic (when you open the back doors from the passenger, you can see how mud stays between the door and the overfender: unacceptable).

@@andreifcd8871 yeah....depeding where you live in Romania, that BMW swap engine can be barely legal or ilegal, depending on who you know at the inspection. I do not need headache. I am happy with my stock CRDI Patrol engine. It's no race car but it does the job.

@@KaosHitman I'm from Bulgaria and had a Y61 2.8 3dr shorty - loved it to death. Mine was imported from Italy and had zero rust issues. I sold it because I've married and have a kid, so I needed a vehicle with more doors and space. You can't get anything with better driveline than the GU patrol - axles are thickkk. I'm on a 2007 Ford F150 now, but thinking of selling it and getting a Y61 5dr. Too bad prices have gone through the roof lately. I really miss the old bucket.

The GU Y61 is coming back, for all those Patrol fans out there. Saw a video on YT, Nissan has just released the 2024 GU Patrol in Japan. It looks absolutely identical to the last GU that came off the production line in 2017. Nissan has decided to revisit the same classic look of the exterior/interior, but under the bonnet, gone is the 3.0ltr diesel. They are only available with the 4.8ltr diesel. No word if or when they may be released outside of Japan, but put me down for one!
