Maybe if you lower you Tyre pressure down to 14psi it would take less effort on you engine. I was on soft sand with 20psi and the hilux turbo diesel went in to limp mode once I drop to 14 it didn’t even need low range. I’m no pro but it works

The stock 80 takes the cake. Cheap, reasonable power, very manageable first or 5th four wheel drive, barely needs any service or car and will take you all the places a tricked out V8 GU will go. Bit heavy on fuel but that's pretty much every 4wd

i put a 1UZ in my old Surf,,, that thing was a beast before the conversion,, Sased, 6 inches of lift, twin locked on 35's, 2 inch body lift,, that 1UZ was so f*&$@ing good,,, now i have pootrol, should never have sold the surf haha

Large enough wheelbase to tow well, loves sand and hard tracks but as soon as wheels get in the air you have to get real careful not to break anything. Sincerely, I broke heaps of shit and bought a fj73 cruiser as well.

patrol heating up---- clean radiator and make sure fans are working!! the patrol needs different diff gears and it is reving high for a off road vehicle the landcruiser will be sucking heaps of fuel due to exhaust leak!!! and diesel is for long distance and crawling

I wish we had patrols here in the states. I've got a nissan Xterra which is on the same platform as the Navara and Titan. My N50 Xterra has a Nissan Titan suspension installed so it might be IFS but it's long-travel and cycles 10.8" of wheel travel up front. (about 274mm) It is locked but it only have a 4.0l v6 and I want to put a nissan vk56 engine into it eventually.

I have a 4.0 V6 Navara with a Dastek chip in, makes great power,225 kW. Better that any new pick-up in the market here in South Africa. What does your engine make stock over there? Mine was 198kw

I ran 20 psi with my Goodyear duratracs on the dunes and beaches around Southend, BeachPort and Robe and never got stuck. Had a lot to do with being a Yota FJ; being light as shit, and heaps of petrol power.

Run an electric waterpump, thermo fans and take your thermostat out, or drill 5 or 6 3mm holes in the outside edges, thats what we do in burnout cars and never have heating issues, high revs or low revs, waterflow is the same, be ideal for 4x4ing aswell

As soon as you said take the thermostat out you lost all credibility. Thermostats regulate flow and pressure, which also helps with the boiling temp of the coolant while inside the engine. On top of that, the faster the water goes through, the less heat it takes with it. Yeah, no thermostat is fine for short runs like skids and what not, but for proper high heat extraction which 4x4’s require, a thermostat is 110% required.

I have had both and the Patrol is the best and the toughest. Toyota is over priced and dont mention the 79, what a rip off. Shame Nissan didn"t continue the Patrol with a desent engine instead of the 3.0 litre. But with any 4x4 its no good off road stock, you have to seriously modify it to make it a good 4x4 that will handle any thing. Keep up the good work Sam.

i own a 07 zd30 series 4 GU,,, i'm not light on the fat pedal either,,, 340k on the clock and still going strong,,, on the beach its great,, like Sam says, let the tyres down and its floats across the sand,,,, as most 4wds should,, but having said that i probably wouldn't take it to cape york or remote places cause it does have so many k's on it ,, reliability is a bit meh ,,, other than the engine its a good 4wd,, would never own a cruiser now i have the patrol
