I recently bought a 3.8 wrangler and was directed that way buy a 30 year jeep mechanic friend of mine. His logic was unless you wanted the older 4.0 the 3.8 is the next best thing (next to maybe a 392). Even with the somewhat higher fail rate from the transmissions in that year if your prime concern is reliability they seem to be the better choice. At least for his locations he has worked at over the years even if you include transmission services the 3.6 was brought in with failure rates almost double that of the 3.8. He says if you are dead set on the 3.6 because you want the extra power aim for 2015 or later.

Everything listed by the mechanic can be applied to ANY other car. ANY other car has an example of a person with a shitty experience, bad engines, cooling systems, flat tires etc. etc. One example means nothing. I drive a 2014 and it is a daily driver. Zero issues as long as you provide the care required by every car.

Ok Full disclosure. I don't own a wrangler but am planning on buying one. I felt overall not bad review but a couple of points I found lacking. First, most of the comments are opinions and subject to individual tastes and likes or dislikes. Second, the headlight issue. Seeing them on the road I would agree they're not the brightest out there but frankly I like that. First they are bright enough if you're driving reasonable speeds. If you're in the middle of nowhere you have your high beams or aftermarket spotties on anyway. Frankly all the new LED, hi-intensity, burn your retinas out are just too much. If you need that much light on a suburban street you don't need brighter lights, you need glasses. Thirdly, I keep hearing mechanics, car salesmen and other 'experts' all saying how unreliable they are. I would suggest that all brands and models have certain issues hence all the recalls even the holy toyota's. I haven't seen any mechanic actually specifically show these common problems. They also don't go into how and if the owners have maintained their vehicles. Saying that they are great off-road but they're no good around town? That doesn't make any sense. So my car is reliable enough to cross the Rubicon trail or Moab or similar but can't handle the local street? Dealerships are a different problem but Jeep has invested millions into these vehicles to make sure that when you are in the middle of nowhere you get to come home. I would suggest that a lot of these mechanics just aren't trained enough so jeeps like typically european cars are a problem. When all you know is how to swing a hammer, a screwdriver could be challenging. Take note for the next four weeks as you go around town which cars you see broken down on the side of the road or the back of a tow truck. I'm willing to bet there aren't too many jeep wranglers.

I own two Wranglers: a 1998 TJ soft top and a 2 door 2012 JK. The novelty hasn’t worn off yet, and in my case, I have purchased both used, but both were cared for by other previous owners, so I have avoided many problems associated with highly modified and hard off road use. Your review for the 2021 is spot on, except again, the novelty, which I would call more of a passion, remains.

I've had the 22 Wrangler Unlimited JL in the Rubicon spec for a few months. It came with a hard to see left indicator on the dash. Jeep replaced the entire instrument cluster for free and it was no fuss at all, so i can't relate to the comments on customer service. The car itself stock is an absolute monster offroad. On road the handling is still a little sh*t but it pulls off the mark pretty damn well for a 4x4. That said, so far, it's my all time favourite car. Love it. Save for the JL

Had a 2008 Rubicon 3.8, bought it with 60000km. Previous owner was a young lady that used it as a fashion statement in Sandton, South Africa. First time I used the diff locks, both of them did not want to release. They were replaced by the dealer under warranty. Currently driving our 6th Jeep, but I think we are the lucky ones, no failures on 5 of them. The first one was a 4.7 Grand, blown head gasket after a waterpipe burst in a rainstorm and we did not notice it. Sold it with about 300 000km on the clock. My pick so far, the 4.7 Grand and WKUL diesel Sahara. I liked the Rubicon, but it made off road driving too easy.

I owned a 2001 TJ sport for 10 years, only thing that went wrong was the rear Dana 44 diff. First time due to me being a teenager and treating her like a rally spec Audi Quattro, second time due to being installed incorrectly by the mechanic. Replaced for free. Had a 2011 JK sport (3.8) for 2 years now. So far, no issues at all 🤞🏾 thirsty as hell and truly terrible on corrugations, but otherwise great fun to drive. Replaced the freedom panels with a bestop sunrider, so nice with the roof off! And even fairly standard (33's, no diff locks) she is incredible off road. Both have been daily drivers and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another

I have a 2017 JKU Sport. Unmolested, factory standard 46k on the clock. Not beating my own drum, but it’s probably the best example I’ve seen in Australia. I bought it new and it was love at first sight. It drives like a truck, you feel every bump, bit vague (but predictable) at highway speed, the wind noise is annoying. But saying all that, that’s why I love it. It’s a car you drive! It doesn’t do it for you! Which adds to the charm. The pentastar 3.6 is brilliant, it sounds angry and gets the 2T girl moving with plenty of enthusiasm. 20 year Jeep owner from XJs to Tjs and a JKU that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I am fairly certain the mechanic in the vid was talking about the Diesel or the old 3.8 boat anchor. Stay away from that, look after it and you will get smiles every time you jump into its uncomfortable drivers seat.

Thanks for that. I have a 2010 Unlimited and I LOVE it. When I first took it out of the car yard it had a problem with the EGR valve a week later, fortunately the car yard fixed it, even though it was too old for a full warranty. The the EGR valve failed again (faulty valve) and they replaced that one too. Then I needed to replace the radiator, this also happened with the previous TJ I had, (so watch out for that), they have made the top of the radiator in plastic (duh), stupid, stupid, stupid. It's been a couple of years trouble free, but now it needs a fuel injector, and I'm dreading the cost. I don't go to Jeep mechanics, but my local guy is fabulous and always uses after market parts. I'm wondering whether it might be prudent to replace All of the injectors at the same time? Because the head will be off anyway, don't want to risk going through that again.

I loved the comment about the headlights. I rented one of these in Hawaii and - truthfully - my Pletzl head torch out-shone the Jeep's lights. As we had to do a fair bit of driving at night in order to get to dive sites by first light, I ended up duct-taping two head torches to the hood in order to improve night-time visibility. The Jeep lights were truly pathetic. As you can imagine, this impromptu after-market mod garnered some amusing comments....

The JKs are almost like two completely different cars, the originals and the post 2012s. I know you briefly mentioned it at the end to aim for a 2012 or above with Pentastar, but it wasn’t mentioned at all earlier and through your mechanics discussion. Yeah there is stuff that can still go wrong, but they are pretty dependable from 2012 on. Also feel you forgot the whole top thing, being a convertible and with removable panels etc is also a big part of the Wrangler experience. Only car of its type here.

@@evigano Yeah, I mean I am sure there are some basic Toyota's that are more reliable, but these are generally pretty good. Definitely post 2012 is better. The diesel, some people love them but they're definitely not as reliable and can require a lot of maintenance. Apparently those are better after 2012 as well, but still I would probably avoid. They also don't seem that efficient compared to the petrol to be worth the trouble. 2012 update also introduced a new auto gearbox with 5 speeds, rather than the older, problematic 4 speed.

If you’re buying a used Wrangler it’s imperative that a qualified mechanic give it a thorough and complete scan and visual check. It’s also important to do the regular maintenance suggested by the manufacturer. I’ve owned 3 Jeeps.Never had a serious mechanical issue with any of them. I currently own a 2015 Wrangler Freedom with the 3.6 engine. Buying any used car is a risk. It available because the previous owner wanted to get rid of it, but the new potential owner doesn’t know the cars history……but it’s history is available online. The cost for this information is minimal. All that’s needed is the VIN number.

There’s two problems that are common. The lifters on the cam can bend the valves and cause a squeaking which means it’s flattening the cam and is a pricey repair. The other is the exhaust manifold breaks really easy. And needs to be replaced. The problem is it’s cast in to the head.

Near every single part of the Wrangler is aftermarket upgradable. The catalogue is absolutely massive. Maybe the largest of any car ever. Which is great and necessary because you're going to need it as the OEM is absolute garbage. Easier to just build a good one new from the aftermarket catalogue.

The only vehicle line that is significantly more reliable than Jeep would be Toyota. Ford is no more reliable, Chevy is not, Range Rover is certainly not. There is a reason the Jeep Wrangler is either number 1 or number 2 in resale value

Yup I own one, the 09 3.8ltr. Did my research on reliability and found that it is the 3.6 with issues, not sure what year models though, perhaps the earlier ones, but what happens is the roller bearings in the valve rockers begin to fail ie a loud tapping sounds from the engine like a loose tappet and then if left untreated the engine disintegrates.

Current owner of 2 JKs. The hood latch bit is a lie - have never seen that. Reliability is also a lie - out of the 5 (yes, five) wranglers we have the only one that leaks is the 83 (CJ) - has a small block chevy V8 - engine does tend to drip oil. If you keep up with regular maintenance, reliability is never an issue.
@ReDriven
@ReDriven 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, thanks so much for watching and taking the time out to comment. Most Wranglers are free from issues however, when researching through countless consumer satisfaction reports, reaching out to Jeep specialists and technicians and various mechanics that specialise in 4x4, they unfortunately do suffer from quite a few common issues. We aren't for a second doubting their incredible ability and when maintained and driven correctly, should hopefully be trouble free, the drama is many people fail to care for them properly or have zero mechanical sympathy, resulting in major issues. While this can occur on any vehicle, Jeep products unfortunately are regularly at the pointy end of the various consumer reports and lists when it comes to inherent issues. - AK
@hisexcelencyflynn1
@hisexcelencyflynn1 2 жыл бұрын
@@ReDriven The main reason for it is that the ones with issues are mostly heavily modified. Also most people commenting on unreliability never owned one (the worst are the mechanics). We have owned 4 Jeeps over the last 20 plus years including a TJ Wrangler and all were absolutely faultless and fun to drive. Our WJ 4.7 V8 that we owned for 16 years was only written off by a hail storm. That thing was unstoppable off road with solid axels, QD2 and an amazing car on road. I am still kicking myself for accepting the insurance offer over few dents and a broken windscreen. We still drive a GC WK2 and it is amazing and very reliable car compared to quite a few German cars that I also owned. All cars need maintenance and must be treated as the engineers that designed them intended. Although I like and appreciate most off road cars, our next car will be another Jeep.

I'd lov to know what you think of the Jeep XJ Cherokee. I had one from new back in 1995 and it was great. So good I upgraded to a Grand Cherokee as soon as they came out.....HUGE MISTAKE. From a car that ran faultlessly to a car that that was nothing but a piece of junk. I sold the Grand Cherokee in 1999 and never went near Jeep again for over 20 years. I always wondered why one jeep was so good and the other so crap. I started reading up on it and found a lot people love the XJ. In the USA they have a huge fan base and cult following. Last year I went out and bought a very original and well looked after 1998 XJ Sport. I could write on and on about it but I think you should do a story on it as it is a rare 'Good Jeep' story. BTW, I saw on one of your other videos you said you wear a Seiko over a Rolex. I couldn't agree more and in fact I often say exactly that. If you are in tht frame of mind then get yourself an Orient Star...best value watch in the world ( Seiko owned) ...kills a Rolex for quality at a price.

I had an older cherokee sport (1998? 2000?) which was great then got a grand cherokee that was kind of shit. Problem with the computer module where it didn't regulate the fuel properly and would buck and carry on while driving and shut off near every time you stopped at a light or stop sign. Got rid of it asap.

I have a 2009 JK sport Rocky mountain edition.around 68 thousand miles . So far the heater core has gone, the radiator, a fuel injector, an idler pulley, the MAP sensor and of course standard things like plugs and wires. Had the trans fluid changed, not flushed. Had to replace the rubber bump stops too as they rotted out. Jeeps use sub standard parts and are poorly designed. Poor handling, poor fuel economy, very uncomfortable and limited space inside. I am so sorry I bought one but cannot afford to buy something better. My advice is if you see a Jeep dealership or a Jeep for private sale, run away quickly! Don`t look back.

Overlander Dan Grec (The Road Chose Me), drove across the entire American continent and circumnavigated Africa, and is currently circumnavigating Australia. He used a different Wrangler for each continent and i believe he claimed they were 'very reliable'. He denies he is sponsored by Jeep. Interestingly, he did admit that his Rubicon in Africa developed some problem, so he was forced to drive a considerable distance using only 2wd.
