Best tip for buying a new jeep with the 3.6…..CHECK CHECK CHECK the engine oil cooler. Make sure it isn’t leaking because that’s gonna be the most common issue. Shine a light down from the top on the left side of the engine (closest to you) and see if there is a puddle of oil. If so, you’re gonna have a 400 dollar fix then and there.

Oil will also leak from the base of the oil filter if the 0 ring wasn't intalled properly, easy to do.

Buying less expensive mods does not mean the vehicle was not take care of. 99% of Jeeps i see all done up are "Pavement Princesses". Guys build them up to look cool, with no intention of ever going off road. They are normally babied and meticulously maintained. You dont need top dollar mods to do that. Any one buying a Jeep to go off road knows what they are looking for...

Same here. It just aggravates me because this dealership had to know that mine was leaking. It was on the lot for 30 days. You can't tell me they didn't see some drips underneath there because I only had it for one day and I could see drips in my driveway. I made the mistake of falling in love with it 💕 and not doing my due diligence. 🤷

I have owned Jeeps of various models since 1972, most of which I purchased used with low milage. My one new Wrangler was a soft top which I regret for numerous reasons to include the dreaded front-end wobble and someone cutting through the plastic window in the back to steal stuff. The most fun was a pre-1950 Willy with no top that I explored the Southwest deserts in. When looking at any vehicle to purchase, I always want a second set of eyes, preferably with mechanical experience, to spot the good and the bad that I might not otherwise. And yes, I agree with looking at the underside first and foremost.

I did look underneath for obvious dents. It does smell of dog ;)

Take another person and have them move steering back and forth then you can see if steering or suspension needs work. You should reach down and pull on belt tensioner. I would expect better bolts on the control arms for 33k. And look at the track bar mount. Make sure there is no movement bacl and forth where track bar mounts to axle.

@Coonazz791

I would say that depends on where you live or where the Jeep has been. If you’re around the city, it’s more likely that they don’t change the oil themselves. Carfax isn’t perfect by any means, but can give you a better idea of how it was taken care of. I would use it more to see how many owners there has been. Not a perfect method, but if it’s had a lot of different owners, then it could mean that it’s had a lot of issues.

If you're buying a used Jeep, you're buying a project vehicle. You had better have the cash reserves to pay someone to do the work, or be a very good DIY mechanic. Oh and you will need to have another vehicle besides the Jeep, because much of the Jeep's time will be in some state of disassembly.

I bought a Jeep JK a few months ago. I was aware to avoid Jeeps that were domiciled in Northern States and Coastal areas, due to rust issues. I was focused on Jeeps with less than 60,000 miles, garaged in a Southern state, not modified and no evidence the Jeep was taken off road or involved in any accidents. I examined over 500 Jeeps for sale on line before I found what I was looking for. It was a one owner, locally owned, that was in showroom condition inside and out. It’s Maintenance record indicated the previous owner changed the oil and filter every 4000 miles at the same dealership. I was lucky to find exactly what I was looking for.

Do you think the used jeep should be under a certain amount of miles when purchasing? Or is it all about the upkeep of the jeep?
@JeepingForBeginners
@JeepingForBeginners Жыл бұрын
If it looks well taken care of, and proof of no real abuse, oil leaks, worn or broken parts... as far as I am concerned miles don't matter in the decision process. But miles DO matter in the selling price. So balance it. 😉
@longreach207
@longreach207 Жыл бұрын
I'm going to say that it's directly related to upkeep. In the 4 years I've had my '13 JK I've more than doubled the miles that were on it at delivery so I feel I can attest. Go full synthetic. 🇺🇲🛻

Honestly CarFax means very little. I was in an major accident, I got car fixed out of pocket and it was never reported. Car Fax pulls from reports that are filed. If a report is never filed, no one ever knows

True, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look at it. It can tell you a lot more than just that or at least give you an idea of what it might have been through even though it’s not perfect.

I want an old used jeep so bad but i know nothing about the technical stuff!!! It scares me! I dont want it breaking down and i have no extra money to fix anything that goes wrong. But i have a dog now and in need of a car now and i wish i could get a wrangler so badly.

What’s the maximum mileage you would consider when buying a Wrangler JL? I wanted something below 40k miles. Seeing a lot of them in the 50-60k mileage range. Is that acceptable? (I plan on keeping the car for a long time)
@JeepingForBeginners
@JeepingForBeginners 11 ай бұрын
12 to 15k per model year is average. Higher is okay if price is lower, but lower mileage means higher price. Ultimately, if you maintain it, and it was maintained, it doesn't matter as much

@@tradde11thats where I would look at the carfax. If it’s had multiple owners with low or high mileage, then you can assume that it might be an unreliable vehicle. Especially if the sale dates are close together. Might not be a reliable way of looking at it, but I’d rather play it on the safe side rather than buying a money pit.

Would you recommend buying a used wrangler that has over 100k miles? I’m looking for one and would daily drive it. Found 3 all over 100k miles.
@JeepingForBeginners
@JeepingForBeginners Жыл бұрын
Mileage is just a number. It's like asking would I date someone over 50? It's not the mileage or age that matters, it's the level of maintenance.... how was it treated for the first 100k, will tell you if it will last the second 100k. Then there is you, how are u gonna treat it over the next 100k? Make sense? Any mechanical object can run for ever, if taken care of properly and on time. A Jeep with more than 100k is not dead, but it may need far more $$ and TLC from you, then a Jeep with fewer miles to keep going. No vehicle can run forever if neglected. So take care of it, fix the small shit, and keep it going. Mileage doesn't matter. The level of maintenance does. 😀

So does any of this matter if I plan to get a warranty? I'm looking to purchase used, but I'm afraid of buying a lemon 🍋 😩
@JeepingForBeginners
@JeepingForBeginners Жыл бұрын
Warranties only last so long. And even if you get a full warranty, if you do not make a wise choice to begin with, ex. Making sure no foreseeable issues, it may always be in the shop using that warranty. Please keep in mind, regardless of what the dealer tells you, warranties will not cover any modifications.... so if you get a Wrangler pre-built, you could still have issues ... so yeah, being smart about a used purchase is always a good idea. 😉

@@JeepingForBeginners thank you do much for that information. So jeep offered a 7year warranty, now I know to ask if any mods were done. Thank you so much for your advice. I once had a sales man drop 5 grand on a 2016 Rubicon. I was alone shopping at the time, as tempted as I was to accept, something in my gut told me it was just too good to be true. 🤔😔

Warranties don’t cover preexisting conditions. Any claim turned in during the warranties first year is likely going to be challenged by the warranty provider. Warranties are expensive, often more expensive than the problem would be to fix. Personally, I don’t buy warranties.

JEEP stands for (J)ust (E)mpty (E)very (P)ocket. I own a Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 2017. It was made in Italy! It is the best Urban style Jeep that is Trail Rated!. It is a small SUV that can go off road! It can and wili go anywhere a stock Wrangler Sport will go! In style and in comfort. You should look at some Jeep Renegades on your channel ! Forget about the Jeep Compass. They are made in Mexico!

Correct, Jeeps are Harleys with 4 wheels. They have gone BK a few times over the years but kids will be kids. Cheap plastics, thin metals, shitty ride but hey...."it's a Jeep thang". I saw so many kids who worked for me with these bottomless pits of despair plowing their meager cash into fixing them (not fixing them up....simply fixing them to get on the road again). Oh well.
