Love this car, but I had to make sure I sell it before the warranty runs out. For the 54 months I had it, it had the following replaced under warranty: 1. Steering wheel electronic 2. Oxygen sensor 3. Engine mount 4. Seat heater 5. Rear cup holder And the following considered consumables: 1. One set of front brake pads and discs 2. Two sets of rear brake pads and discs 3. Both batteries I might also add that the stop start never worked well for me which forces me to stop quite abruptly so the engine doesn’t come back to life again. The suspension roughness mentioned in this video is also accurate. But both of these issues appear to have been rectified in later revision when I drove a MY19 loaner with larger wheels.

Adam likes Volvos and therefore is a man of culture! Amazingly stylish and comfortable seems to be the theme for Volvos. I've had an NA 850 and Mk1 S40 years ago, and they were lovely but had a list of issues (electricals, engine). That said, though, these newer cars are on another level of hell. I may say this as a Volvo fan, but if they made more reliable cars, they'd be the best carmaker out there.

I have had three of the second generation models (a D5 and two T8s). During the first 3 years of production they had a few issues (oil leaks, turbo and gearbox issues and a few others) but Volvo made a lot of minor updates to fix the reliability points so that by 2019 (MY 2020) onwards everything had been fixed (my first 2015 D5 had a couple of big issues - gearbox failure, air suspension issues). I currently have a MY2020 T8 Inscription Pro at the moment with a cream leather interior with matt wood trims, and it is wonderfully comfortable and has a very high quality feel and we have had no issues with it.

I've just bought a 2017 D5 R-Design with Polestar myself for just over $50k from a dealership. 3 months in & extremely happy. The design has held up so well & given this will be the last XC90 generation it'll hold its value really well too I would bet. Its replacement, the EX90 doesn't arrive here until end of 2024 & that will likely be pushing $160k. Mine has almost every optional extra & it barely looks out of place compared to modern standards. There's not really anything it's missing both in creature comforts or safety tech. The B&W sound system is sublime FYI - make sure this was added if you're in the market for one. It's only got 20" wheels which to me look absolutely fine & I think we've gained some ride improvements because of that (we have the air suspension also). The only slight negative for me is that the engine noise of the D5 is noticeable as it's getting going if you push it between 0-40kmh. Other than that it's a completely serene highway cruiser, which around here is perfect for us. Torque band is perfect for this car & the polestar tuning really makes a difference. The other thing is the interior quality. I've driven this compared to the newer Volvos and can honestly say that the quality now, isn't what it used to be pre-2020. But test that out for yourself, I think you'll be surprised. It still feels like pretty much a new car, but it's also clearly been well looked after by its single previous owner. I think this is also key with these cars 2nd hand. Find a great example, that's been well looked after with regular services & your risk to reward ratio drastically improves. We also bought a 5 year Presidian warranty for it as the reviews we're really good so this give us some peace of mind - it's meant to replicate the factory warranty but I guess we'll cross that bridge if/when we get to it. All-in all, can see myself with this one for a long time.

The 2nd generation XC90 is a lucky dip, you either get lucky or unlucky. My family has had two 2nd Gen XC90s a 2015 D5 and a 2019 T6 (which we still have, both were momentum trim models) the 2015 D5 was riddled with issues, likely because it was an ex-press vehicle, issues were things like, Turbo hose blowing, electrics failing (wipers, indicators, even the digital gauge screen), and the awd system failing, not a very nice list at all. On the other hand the 2019 T6 has been absolutely rock solid, no issues have come upon us since buying it.

Braking is often like that in hybrid cars. It is because the top portion of brake pedal movement is for regenerative braking with the electric motor and only when you press it a bit further, it goes for the physical brakes. The top portion with the regen is tricky, because if the battery isn't ready to take in electricity (it is full or cold, or whatever) it seems to affect how smooth the braking is, it's kinda not knowing what to do, so just press further for the real brakes.

I have been fortunate to buy a good one according to 2 mechanic's with currently 96k. no issues so far. confirm the brakes are strange at times, like you said - they also are notorious for eating rotors and pads, like 40-60k km the air suspension is great and gets a 8/10, the voice controls is woeful use your fone. couple of squeeks coming from the dash is about it really. biggest concern is the manufacture of these cars Belgium vs china, lots of QA, brake, electrical issues in the China made ones, fuel filler so choose wisely and get a 2nd gen xc90 forgot to add that's all the bad ^ everything else is really good, comfortable, great fuel economy 1100km long range 850 short range, decent transmission - hardly any hunting for gears, tidy interior, the self driving mode is best in class better than my tesla! for a 5 yr old car! plenty of tech + list goes on. drive one 😊

T8 is way too complex and risky. D5 and T5 will offer the least problems. R versions are ridiculous, it's a family SUV, and will never be a sports stationcar. R tires will just ruin the ride comfort.
@mariosefthymiou878425 күн бұрын
I think the key to this car is keep it simple, the T8 is a terrible idea as a used car. Avoid sunroofs and stick with the diesel on the small rims. We’ve had a D5 from new and it’s been a very reliable car. However. There’s a few issues: on standard Volvo pads the brakes don’t last very long, the top engine torque mounts are basically a disposable item, the only positive is they’re easy to replace. Timing belt on ours nearly went at 110k (should be replaced at 100k), EGR valve replaced. Steering wheel button replaced early under warranty. The car drives very well on the 19rims and handles better than most proper seven seaters. Its also is safer than most cars on the road and the active safety features actually work and are properly tuned unlikely many of the cars on sale atm.

I got an XC90 D5 year 2016, I got to say i had very few issues that where easy fixed, some under warranty some not. The thing is all the latest cars are full of tech and complications which has an effect on repair costs. All new cars have expensive bills if out of warranty. In your opinion what is a good, logical expense to maintain, modern family SUV?

Jim- xc90 problems - heaps, Lexus Rx 450h- not much. There’s a message there. Great to see you about to crack 170k subs.

I remember when this vehicle launched and it had a direct injected supercharged turbocharged electrified drive train and in my mind I was like, lease and then junk yard. Do not buy used😅

It's crazy how the US version of the XC90 started in like 2003, and Australia had to wait until 2015 for the first one.
@Heyitzpuppies-74 ай бұрын
In Australia, the first gen XC90 was released in around 2003 and second gen was straight away.

I always wanted to buy a XC90 but I've heard of water leak sunroof and oil issues... reliability is a big ??? I would go for a Toyota Land Cruiser for Japanese reliability.

I bought a 2nd hand 2018 XC90 T6 about 18 months ago. Been great so far. However, turning circle is terrible and parking sensors don’t always seem to tell you there’s something hard just beyond where you can see…

If I could suggest one improvement in the videos it would be to slow a bit while handling the interiors like cubbyholes or rear kid seat thing in this particular video. You seem a little rushed while exploring and explaining those in many videos 😅 Other than that Amazing content as always. Thank you for your awesome work

i have an 2020 xc90 inscription, break pads and disks had to be replaced with less than 15k miles, $2,100 usd, then the volvo ignition system failed at the same tame the evaporator, cost to replace both $4,400 usd and it has 21k miles now, so its basically new, very low usage and i already spent $6,500 in repairs...
@dianeathoacardinalridge87885 ай бұрын
At the dealership or mom and pop repair shop? It’s got to be had the cost, minimum, removing Volvo from the equation.
@einyel635 ай бұрын
@@dianeathoacardinalridge8788at Volvo dealer, it is hard to find people that know how to work with a volvo, at least where i live, also parts are pretty expensive. When the break pads worn off, i quoted at external repair shops and the price was similar

Im surprised the leather is in such good shape. The previous generation of Volvo's (1998-2015) had leather that wore badly. Most of the used examples I've seen have terrible cracks and splits.

These look good, but I'd recommend the first generation models with either the i5 or i6 engines. Those are more reliable than those generation with its all- 2.0 turbo lineup.

I can attest the sunroof stopped working on my volvo s60 2020 just after 3 years lol It costed me only $250 to fix, as the service only had to get the motor's out and reset them god, why don't they make them better :(

The XC90 is a great looking and practical family car BUT on my 2018 XC90 D5 Power Pulse R-design the gearbox has been replaced and now after 90.000miles the engine broke with inner mechanical failure and needs to be replaced with no help or goodwill from Volvo what so ever ... Greetings from UK
