Phase 2 220 Trophy european owner here. Engine is bulletproof, just service it under 10k km and put the best fuel you can (98+) since you don't have a replaceable fuel filter. EDC gearbox is way better in phase 2 (after 2017), buy you should change it's oil every 30-50k km, it's not much like ~2L of oil and quick job. Invest in good tyres, Michellin Pilot Sport 4 for summer and w/e you pick in winter. Good upgrades if you have some money to spend: Bilstein B14/PSS coilovers will fix most of the harsher ride, due to better shocks for the bumps, a set is about 1.5k euro and front Brembo 4 pot calipers for about 800 euro (they are Gen 3 Clio RS ones).

Thanks for the good review. I've a 2014 RS200 Cup Premium which has done 85k km's since purchased in 2015. All services through authorised Renault dealers & I've never used the launch control or tracked it. Notwithstanding that this car is so much fun to drive around the burbs and the recent discovery of the Clio V6 soundtrack has added further to my enjoyment (Nissan GTR soundtrack was OK for a while, but got boring). Other then the occasionally clunky & slow infotainment system and a gearbox that has gone missing a few times (less than 5 times over ownership period, and then it just needed a turn off and re-start) there's not been a problem. No squeaks/rattles. No sunroof. The car is firm riding, not hard (or crashy), unlike the Ford Fiesta ST which I was going to buy until I took one on an extended test drive. I almost needed a kidney belt and new teeth. The RS200 was a godsend. Vive la Clio!

Mate I wish I'd had the same experiences. I've personally owned a Peugeot 206 GTi 180, Megane RS 225 and 265 and all cost me a fortune in maintenance. All were incredible to drive but all were unreliable and cost substantially more than other (Japanese and South Korean) cars to maintain and repair. Plus with the amount of research we did for this video, even though I'm always tempted to buy another Megane RS or hot Peugeot, the reliability reports, customer satisfaction surveys and numbers from parts suppliers and Euro specialist mechanics don't lie. - AK

Trim falling off, drivers seat became rattly, some ECU gremlins, loads of small things, all resolved by Renault but compared to say an i30N, (which I've long term tested 3 of), the regular niggling problems became infuriating. All superb cars to drive and exude that French cool factor which the likes of Hyundai and Mazda can't match but honestly, an i30N is 99% as good to drive but unlike my French car experiences, they just refuse to break, and I've tried to break them! - AK

I just traded my 2014 Monaco GP and I'm missing it dearly. Every time I pressed the start button I would smile. After four years of ownership and 40,000 km a year I had no real problems - just a few weird things happen. Yes, RS Sport telemetry (and all Android on board entertainment system) can be laggy at times. I only managed to do one free update on the system and TomTom based GPS maps. The rear spoiler skin did let go at 100km/h too. Spotted it in the air in the mirrors and went back to luckily find it on the verge - completely intact. 3M body tape to the rescue. Black-out roof was poorly done (and on all Renaults from what I have seen). Soft pads and rotors are the only thing to watch. That is the price you pay for that incredible braking power. Not as bad as an RS3, but don't ever expect to machine the rotors. Oil/filter every 10,000 km and give it some welly every now and then and enjoy.

Always thought the French could design a lovely looking car, usually nice to drive but built to a budget. I always found French cars do not take hard high mileage well and tend to need things like wheel bearings, drive shafts and steering racks sooner than other Vehicles in the same price bracket from say Korea or Japan. The Megane RS is a weapon, Peugeot have always made a nice fast hot hatch. I think French car unreliability is greatly exagerated, Italian or English is far worse 🤣.

Now I own a Clio RS3 and running smoothly so far. I think the reliability issues are mostly concerned in 20+ years old car, nowadays I find them pretty reliable
@nk53nxg2 жыл бұрын
@@micheledallalba8950 if you have a 29 year old Panda on the original clutch that probably says more about your driving style not being hard on the vehicle. I have had vehicles that have done very high miles/km on original clutch because I lived in the countryside, if I lived in the town with lots of stop start driving I would need a clutch much sooner. The French always made interesting design vehicles where as the Germans were usually quite conservative. English and Italian cars are lovely to look at and drive, but just tend to have shocking electrics and expensive to fix.

Own an older Clio (Clio 2nd generation from 2003). Their great cars, I agree. They do have some electrical issues, but I've sorted all of these myself. Usually, it was little plastic plugs that didn't make contact. Sorted these with a zip tie or repositioning. They're cars with personality. I'm now thinking of replacing mine with a newer vehicle (Alfa-Romeo Giulietta, hopefully a QV) but I would be sad to let my Clio go. Why the Giulietta, well, their rarely seen, often overlooked and underestimated, extremely beautiful, and I refuse to go for the obvious Japanese, Korean, German, or American alternatives. You only live once, and I'm not a crowd follower. I love being different and unique when it comes to cars. The only reason I'm planning to replace my Clio is I'd like something more modern. Why not buy a newer Renault? Well, because I feel like a complete change and to try something else, different from the normal boring everyday car brands. Maybe you could do a review on the Giulietta and MiTo, although I've done my own research and know their strong and weak points. No car brands are perfect because they're all man made objects. Just pay extra attention to those weak points, and you'll be fine.

#1 rule for not spending a fortune on a used car: buy a manual. #2: get one with less than 100,000 miles. #3: You're used car that has 70,000+ miles is going to have things that wear out/break. It is a fact of life with cars. Just make sure it isn't the engine/ trans. If you go in knowing these few things, plus make sure you check the oil after driving it, check the oil cap for sludge etc, check underneath for rust, check the coolant reservoir for discoloration, use test drive to check the clutch feel. Do these things and you're almost guaranteed to at least feel like you haven't been ripped off.

Great car only concern is that edc repair cost (tcm and cluthes)...I talk that from experience as I changed the both 😁 Still great car to drive and beutiful from outside.

That oil interval change is in kilometres or miles? I'm from Romania and work in Switzerland, and I want to buy a car from Switzerland, I'm a Renault fan and want a Laguna II in good condition, it's around 4000-5000 Swiss francs; the big problem is with the oil interval change, here is at 30-35 000 km and 2-3-4 years, man that oil interval is way too long, I don't know what to do, maby go to Germany and buy from there, or France.

Had a rs 200 auto, cracking fast little car, avg 37 mpg so not the best but fun, the edc geabox is very smooth but not a DSG but still u wouldnt really notice unless ur a real car fantatic, not as well built in terms of a VW but still brilliant car!

Literally just picked a 2016 220 trophy up today, was obsessively maintained by the previous owner. Ive put about 200kms on it already and haven't found fault with the experience and loved every second, however time will tell I guess.

Used to have one similiar to this RS in the video, loved it and miss it like hell till today. It had a little track package und was hard as fck. Felt like my back broke as I drove it home from the trader 2 hours. But instantly fell in love with the handling, agility and sound. Not to harsh but also not that brave as some competitors. Now my girlfriend is searching for a family car and as we do not need 2 family cars I may replace mine with a hot hatch again. Unfortunately the clio rs and megane rs is unreasonable expensive right now... and with a child, money is more limited than back few years. so I may switch to a corsa opc and give opel/Vauxhall a chance.

Did you find auto under “normal” settings feel similar to a car driving on economy mode? Did “auto normal” shifts seem slow under normal driving?
@fabsi2766 ай бұрын
@@gerald9760 no to be honest. For travelling it is not very comfy. I had the cup package, what made the car a bit lower (and harder for your back...). The automatic gearbox switched gears sometimes to late or sometimes earlier than youd expect. So i can not recommend if you expect something similiar to eco Mode. Even if you are not in sports Mode the fuealage was mostly around 8-9 Liter/100km, driving on Autobahn and City combined. And the shifts felt slower, yes.
@gerald97606 ай бұрын
Did you find throttle Inputs felt slightly delayed too when pressing the throttle when taking off normal?
@fabsi2766 ай бұрын
@@gerald9760 no, it was not as responsive as in sports Mode but it was good. Only when you gave relatively much throttle an the gearbox decided to downshift, then it felt very "input laggy" for a second. But with more experience you know how much throttle you can apply before a downshift happens. And if you put it in manual Mode, that will never be a Problem.

I love your reviews guys. I don't know of transmission problems
@ReDriven2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, thanks so much for watching and commenting. Both Jim and I actually do mention that the auto/twin clutch models can be problematic. Only a small amount of research through forums and reliability reports will quickly show various transmission problems too mate. - AK

@@ReDriven Sorry guys, must have missed that. I'm very Renault Sport biased. Keep up the great work
@ReDriven2 жыл бұрын
@@kevrendell Cheers so much Kevin. I must say, one of the more challenging parts of creating these videos is trying to suppress my love or bias towards certain cars. I LOVE Renault Sport vehicles (amongst loads of others we have and will be featuring) and to turn off any preconceived love for a car is incredibly difficult, especially when researching the negatives surrounding said car. - AK
