I watched your videos initially to help me start with my air dry clay journey, and I am thankful to you for these amazing videos. 🙂 I am stuck at painting them with acrylic paint. No matter what brush or paint brand I use, it ends up with brush strokes. How can I make it smooth looking? Have you faced it too initially?
@RedRockingBird Жыл бұрын
Thank you, good to hear you are enjoying your air dry clay. When painting with acrylic a nice soft brush made for acrylic paint works best and you will most likely need to do 2-3 coats of paint to achieve a smooth finish, if you have streaks do another coat, then a varnish over the top should help blend the finished look, hope that helps, best of luck 😊

@RedRockingBird3 жыл бұрын
Well done, what a fab project. Always takes longer than you think, make sure 100% dry not just touch dry, until you touch it or allow it to touch any surface, you then have to turn over and repeat, spray lacquer depends on brand it again longer than you think, like 24hours+ for mine. You could try the whole process on a smaller piece of clay first so you know what you’re doing, rather than spoil your project if you’re unsure. Enjoy ❤️

I have just begun to play around with clay after years of painting, beading & even candlemaking. I have been experimenting and having an absolute blast. I am trying to incorporate or use various art materials together in this year's journey, which naturally has led me to clay, paint, beads, fibers etc.. but I am wondering could I use oil pastel to color my clay before using it make something, and can i use it to color it after i have created something? Sarah, have you ever tried to colour air dry clay using chalk pastels/watercolour artist chalk pastels? I have seen that some people use the chalk pastels to add shading to their polymer clay designs like giving 'baked' goods like cookies and cakes realistic baked effects like crust etc and I wonder if the chalk pastels could be shaved so that you have a powder and then mix the powder into the clay like you would with paint to colour the clay etc. It would probably give a subtle pastel like colouring to the clay pieces but it might be worth a shot! I just wanted to see if you or if anyone else has tried this so that I know what to expect as I have some clay and I also have a box of chalk pastels 😄 If no one else has tried this, I might try it and see what happens! I am also going to use your slip method too soon with my left over pieces of clay 😉 Love your channel!!
@RedRockingBird3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I haven't no, but sure it will work well, but if you incorporate into the clay it may take quite a lot as I find shop bought air dry clay really 'swallows' this kind of thing, unless you have something richly pigmented. Worth a go, try with a small piece and see how it looks when dry, as can look different once dry. Thanks, Sarah

@@RedRockingBird Hello again! This evening I used some watercolour paints in little tubes to colour some of my DAS clay - I wanted to achieve a caucasian skin tone and I initially used a premixed colour that I thought would turn out nicely but it was more of a gold colour so I didn't use that one. I did try the primary red and yellow though from the set of paints that I was using along with some white and I managed to get a pinky flesh sort of colour. I then used a little dressmaking pin to sculpt a little ear. The ear looks pretty good, it is only basic with very basic details but for a first attempt with colouring the clay and making something like that, it turned out quite nicely! I will try some watercolour pastel chalks that I have soon but the watercolour paints actually worked quite nicely and I am surprised that the clay stayed quite wet for a while!

Hi! Great videos! Any tips how to paint inside the letters (if you use stamps to imprint) I’ve attempted with acrylic paint and a fine paintbrush but it just looks messy! Any help will be very appreciated! X
@RedRockingBird3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, you could try with watercolour on the bare clay instead of acrylic, always do a test piece first though to practice and see what happens. I know what you mean though, if the letters are small it can be very tricky to get neat. I've stamped with the ink pad on the clay before too, but just make sure you only get the ink on the letter and not the background. Also did you see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHuXh4qefNR1Y5I this is my preference for lettering
@feem96013 жыл бұрын

I have craft acrylic (craft smart brand) and the same brand of clay (in white), but for some reason, the paint does not roll into the clay well. I tried red and all it did was make the clay liquid and pink. Maybe I didn't use enough clay. But I only used a teeny tiny drop of paint using a toothpick. It was for a piece of a 1/12 scale miniature. I didn't want to use more clay than I needed but it still liquidized when the paint was introduced... Edit: Oh also thank you for the video! I couldn't find a single article that showed/mention craft acrylic. Only hard body artist grade acrylic paint.

Hello, and thank you for all your videos. But what have I done wrong? , My sons and I got really excited to get stuck in with rolling in the colouring..... but it hardly took the colour like in your video here, it was very pale. Is it the brand? Though I bought the paint through your amazon shop. And we also tried the marble effect but the three colours merged into one. So it was like we so wasted the paint. We are really wanting to make a go of air dry clay. (This is only our fourth session)
@RedRockingBird3 жыл бұрын
Hi thank you, glad you are enjoying. I tend to colour smaller amounts of clay as the clay does seem to 'swallow' the paint really quite easily. Colours like blue with higher pigment levels will colour the clay easier, but yes when adding the colour into the actual clay they do come out quite a bit paler and more subtle. It's fun to add some sand into the clay too for some texture. I hope you keep going with your projects.

im painting my clay piece with acrylic paint but its lifting up/peeling, what can i do to stop this please
@RedRockingBird3 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean with acrylic paint, i often do a slightly thinned down (with a little water) acrylic paint first coat on the bare clay, then let each layer dry for much longer than you think between coats, then it needs a top coat of lacquer/varnish etc to seal it all in, as you let it dry don’t let it touch anything where it is wet. As an alternative try watercolour on the bare clay and seal. See my watercolour on air dry clay video and my air dry clay playlist. Thanks

Hi, the clay won’t absorb the acrylic paint, but form a layer in the top, unfortunately some paints you need a few coats before you get a full bodied look, you might find the same brand but a different colour gives you better results with fewer layers. For example with my current acrylics the yellow takes about 6 coats to cover but the turquoise covers fully in 2 coats. Then a good varnish over the top, best of luck

Hello! I'm done painting my clay with acrylic and yesterday, I used a pd glue (mod podge alternative) to seal it. Some paint come off while I'm sealing it. Right now I'm sealing it with acrylic matte but some parts of the paint still come off (paint chipping) Any recommendations?
@RedRockingBird Жыл бұрын
It sounds like it’s not drying fully before coming into contact with something, so is peeling, every layer needs to be completely dry before adding another. I’d also try a different varnish as a glue is not the best

Can you use underglaze to air dry clay?
@RedRockingBird4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I think underglaze is more often used for clay that will be fired in a kiln, so I wouldn't add it to air dry clay. In this instance my 'underglaze' is acrylic paint and then i add varnish or lacquer once dried. Hope that helps.

Acrylic paint works well and I do watercolour too, I made a video on water colour and air dry clay, other paints like poster, gauche and some pens may smudge, always do a test piece first ❤️

So... I always had gesso after I've done a pc with air-dry clay, that is not colored. But, if I color the clay, I would not want to add gesso, so that would turn it white. So, what do you do next after you've colored the clay and it has dried? Help... Help??? 😊

Do you apply the color directly to the air dry clay, or do you apply a layer of sealant or any other product?
@RedRockingBird3 жыл бұрын
Hi, there are many options, here I ‘seal’ with the acrylic paint and then seal the whole thing with spray lacquer, you can use an acrylic primer first if you wish or gesso if you have it, I currently don’t have any gesso. Try out different ways on some small items and see what you prefer, we all do things a little differently. On the mini trinket pot I used an acrylic medium first, then acrylic as I was doing a lighter finishing coat, but I am currently doing a succulent planter and went straight in with acrylic as I will be putting several layers of polyurethane varnish over the top and it will all be fully fully sealed then. ❤️

What is the name of the pen in no, 3
@RedRockingBird3 жыл бұрын
This was a marker pen like a sharpie, if you want to varnish them after it would be best to use an acrylic paint pen, as varnishes can reactivate the ink and ruin the piece. Some pens I can use mod podge to seal the ink and then varnish, I always do a small test piece before hand to make sure the project goes to plan. Thank you ❤️

I have, it’s one of the methods I use in my ‘Glaze’ air dry clay video, longevity really depends on the brand/type as some people have experienced it going tacky after a few years. I love the gloss it gives pins etc ❤️
