Notice that Yellow didn't actually write anything for TSC and Green's builds, meaning that he had already ruled them out even before he decided. As people have pointed out Green and TSC were never taught how to use maps, and anything else they used either. This means they most likely cheated. Blue's was useful but inconvinient and only used one piston, relying on water physics more than redstone. Red used most of what was taught and was very diverse, as well as convinient and useful.

Red deserved this win because as cool as Blue's invention was, it was more reliant upon water physics than Redstone. And the video games made by Orange and Green were ridiculously complex and far exceeded the lesson that Yellow taught, making me suspect they got outside help maybe from instructions or usage of a command block.

I like how during the lessons, besides the basics, the different sticks actually take notes on different things, noting things they find interesting & not just constantly scribbling. It's best shown from 1:32 - 1:38 during the Observers lesson, where Red & Green takes note on the flower, Orange (+ a nod from Blue) for the brewing stand, Blue (+ a nod from Red) for the item display, and Red (+ a nod from Green) for the fire. It happens in other scenes too, and it's such a nice touch!

If you know Yellow, he would care about how you use Redstone and what you want to do with it, not just using it to show how smart you are. Red used the technology for a legitimate need. Washing off dirt with soap and water quickly and automatically, saving you time and frustration of giving a bath to a dirty animal, or making your own bath really fun. Blue's invention was honestly a waste of mechanisms. You can fill the cauldron itself with water and drop an armful of ingredients in it fine without needing whatever the heck he made. Yellow would definitely see the whole thing as pointless. As for Green and Orange, I have a feeling he looked at their displays and thought. "Wow. A simulation of stuff we already do every day in Minecraft. And it's slow and janky." Also pointless and an obvious bid to be the smartest in the room, which he wasn't actually looking for.

Yellow never taught them anything about outputting to a map, so orange and green either cheated or at least looked up other stuff. Blue's really just moves one piston. I'm pretty sure that's why red won. It used multiple things from the lessons, wasn't absurdly beyond what was taught, and you could mostly see how it worked.

I know it's not as clear cut as some other things, but I think Red also won because he captured the spirit of redstone: making something easier and more fun. Blue's would have been tricky to reset and not much easier than normal, while TSC and Green forgot about having fun and got overcompetitive.

Lol took me literally half an hour to make my piston door work until I finally figured out how to reverse the redstone signal so it's active first and when I step on the pressure plates the signal cuts. Took me another half an hour to make a hallway with lamps that turn on as you run through it. Didn't make it on observer blocks or anything, forgot about them totally. All I did was make a pressure plate and use repeaters to delay the signal. Of course if you didn't sprint and stopped halfway you would be sitting in darkness after that. Ehh, you gotta begin from something I guess.

Why red won: Blue WOULD have won, however he did not set up a system for the nether warts to be automatically replanted, making his machine basically worthless. Green and Orange's machines weren't useful, they both focused on putting minecraft, IN minecraft, which is useless and a waste of time, it would only entertain someone for a few seconds and then never used again. Reds machine was the only one that was actually useful.

After re watching the entire series a few times, i realized that each colour has their own special abilities. Blue is really good at farming and potions, red is really good with animals, green is really good with music and building, yellow is good with redstone and command blocks, and orange is like an all rounder who is decent at all of them. I like to think that what Yellow was looking for was a good looking build that was useful, not for entertainment. That Blue was second, in his was a farm, but didn't look as good since it was built with dirt and probably not the most efficient. Red's was useful in that it also looked good too. TSC and Green just created games.

The reason Red won the redstone contraption competition is because although The Second Coming and Green's ones were both more advanced, red's was useful for something but Second and Greens were just games. Red's pig washing thing beat Blue's nether wart farming thing because it would be harder to reset Blue's one than Red's one. Blue would have to replant the four rows of nether wart, some of which he'd have to climb up for, when Red only had to refill his dispensers and pistons.

Who knows, maybe some camera angle screwery is making it so every pixel is actually a block, but i heavily doubt that, and even if it were the case, would still almost certainly need command blocks to move.
