Heyo! Welcome to my second video on how to reduce clay dust in your ceramics studio. In this video I’ll share my favorite material, Hardie Backer, and the reasons why I prefer it for clay wareboards. One of the greatest reasons is because it is easily cleaned and doesn’t store clay dust. It is also fairly easy to use and cut without having to buy expensive tools. Hardie Backer has been a game changer for my classrooms dust levels and I hope you enjoy this tutorial on how to make Hardie Backer wareboards.

Thanks Miss Lienna for the shout out! Great video. If you are getting mold, try vinegar in a spray bottle, it stops more mold from growing.

Thanks!!! This video made it fun to learn all the nitty gritty details! You are an awesome teacher! Do you think the tape is absolutely needed? So far i haven't had problems from crumbs getting into our clay but I guess better to be safe…

Thanks 😁. You’re fine without… some of the left over pieces I didn’t tape and haven’t experienced any issues.

Thanks great video. I think plaster board is the equivalent in the UK.

I think your plasterboard is our drywall, used for walls. Hardie Backer is cement board that is mold resistant that lines showers, behind the tile. It helps keep mold from growing. I hope that helps. Good luck!

it would be easier & cleaner cut if u scorred the backerboard & had the scoring UP when u push down to break off the pieces...that’s how scoring & breaking is done ... also duc tape would last longer & be more waterproof than the painters tape. good video tho, thanks

I was also wondering if the breaking might have been cleaner if I hadn’t flipped the board before breaking? I agree, double scoring would be better. I’m not sure duct tape would be best... clay would stick to the glossy surface and it often leaves a residue after you’ve used it when it starts wearing down.

I bought something similar, but it isn't Hardie Backer brand, and one side seems to be flaking off. Have you noticed the top layer flaking at all? I think I recall seeing somewhere that you need to use this particular brand for pottery?

Mine have held up for years now. No flaking.

I think I ended up with cement board. Hoping it didn't get into my clay? I've heard if it does it can make your wares explode in the kiln :\ @@MissLinneaLark

Nightly squeegeeing by the janitors. Currently I have portable classroom where I cannot squeegee, but at my last school, everyday the janitor would take a hose and spray down the floors and then squeegee all the clay dust into the outdoor halls. If the excess water can’t go through your door, then it should prolly be squeegeed and then sucked up with some kind of shop vac.

Thanks for the vidéo ! What material is a Hardie Backer Wareboard ? I live in Switzerland and would love to find the equivalent :)

Hardiebacker is cement boards that are placed beneath tiles in bathrooms to repel mold. Hope this helps. You might need to ask a local carpenter 😄. Some people even use drywall if you cannot find hardiebacker. Good luck!

1/2" or 1/4"?
@MissLinneaLark
@MissLinneaLark 3 жыл бұрын
I would go with 1/4” if you are careful. I would choose it just for my own use. However, if you also teach a bunch of kids that will do who knows what to these boards, I would get the half inch.
