Hi! I'm currently mixing/mastering the biggest vocal session I've had, and started having the CPU hog issue. Your fix worked like a magic wand. I had all the effects on each track because I usually need to manipulate them for each vocalist, but I can isolate certain areas of the tracks to change effects, and now have all the tracks feeding off the Bus.

One HUGE way to save CPU is 'bounce to track/clip'. Save the original track/clip as 'original' and any effects you add to the track or clip right click and bounce to clip or bounce to track. As soon as you do so, any FX are applied to the track/clip and are no longer sucking up CPU. If you end up not liking the change you can undo or just delete it and you still have the original to start from scratch with.

Excellent video. Just like everyone else, I was having big issues with one song and CPU usage, sometimes reaching 150%. I use Ableton Live btw. Thanks to several of the tricks here, including closing other processes, freezing tracks, and changing the buffer size I got it down to 50% the highest with much of the song at barely 25%. Thanks!!!

One thing to keep in mind is that DAW performance is often affected more by other processes or peripherals than straight CPU performance. My i7 rarely goes above 30% usage even in the biggest sessions (60+ tracks). For many people with newer processors the culprit is a process or peripheral that holds onto the processor for a couple hundred microseconds and causes audio dropouts. This can be helped by increasing the buffer size at the cost of latency, as you mentioned. Hardware like WI-FI cards, Firewire carbs, USB expansion cards, and GPUs can often tie up processing. I also read an article just this morning about a bottleneck created by a close process call associated with Google Chrome and Windows 10 that can affect performance. I'd add 'don't use your DAW computer for internet browsing' and 'check your peripherals' to the list.

Yes i do agree that there is a much bigger list of ways to increase CPU performance but i find that many don't like to change settings to anything but there DAW. I was trying to give the more straight forward ways to increase performance without getting to in depth. But.......maybe i can do a second video where we get into the motherboard, overclocking, hardware, and the other things that maybe a more experienced computer user could do. Thanks for watching!

TrueSoundStudios You're too awesome! I believe you have the DBX266 but I wanted to ask if you think the DBX286s is a good budget friendly upgrade for my solo audio? I'm just getting into doing podcasts as well as some vocals and I have literally no audio experience. I don't want to go out and buy the most expensive stuff I can find before figuring out if what I want to accomplish can be done without breaking the bank ❤️

great video, this is something most starting engineers completely omit - optimizing the mix performance-wise :) I quit using Sonar after about 7 years, it randomly toggles channel strips itself, there were problems with take lanes consuming performance gradually, audio snap sounding different rendered than realtime listened... finally I decided to leave both Windows and Sonar and went OSX (hackintosh, same PC hardware as before) and Reaper, gotta admit it was best decision I did in past decade regarding my daw workflow

Yes i hear you, i have had my share of really bad issues in the past. As soon as i went to a PC that only ran the DAW software and changed to a much better interface, the issues just stopped! I was running MOTU interfaces for a long time and had soooo many issues. I really loved those but the driver issues and connection problems just ruined it for me. Thanks for watching

Doesn't reducing the instances of console emulator on separate tracks, just to one bus, pretty much miss the whole point of what the console is actually doing? I know in a lot of cases this is fine but expect a difference in sound when you're doing this with drums, etc. In a lot of cases, the difference in sound is so minor that it's not even worth the extra cpu though so it's still a great shout :)

So yeah you'll save cpu by running only the bus console/tape sim BUT the point is indeed to use it on all the channels so the color adds up
@TrueSoundTV
@TrueSoundTV 6 жыл бұрын
Yes that is the negative. When you are trying to save cpu though, without going to buy a faster computer or seriously upgrading your computer, your going to have to sacrifice something. At least you get a small amount of analog color which is better than nothing. Thanks for watching!

So… I went to my device manager in Windows 11 and disabled the “High Precision Event Timer” in the System Devices tab… this truely seems to have fixed ALL of my studders/sample rate clicks/ and popping like that… Man… I hope someone else tries this and is able to confirm my results

If your drives are SSD drives, you must *NOT* defragment them. Not only it will not help the performance (because the way data are stored in SSD drives is completely different from rotating hard disks: instead of writing data in consecutive blocks, the SSD hardware controller actually fragments them *on purpose*), it will reduce their lifetime quite drastically if the defrags are scheduled frequently.

Interesting. So from what the guy says, if you're using Windows 8 to 10, Windows does a monthly defrag on its own so we shouldn't worry about it. On Windows 7 however, it's necessary to schedule a monthly defrag.
@TrueSoundTV
@TrueSoundTV 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah at this point i'm really not sure what is correct. It seems that the newer solid state drives can be defragmented without harm to the drive as long as it's not every day. I think i should just call or email one of the manufactures about this.

There is also input FX when recording, which is pretty much the same as using analogue gear when recording into your DAW, but it has the signal processing stuff on your DAW. Although since you can't edit the FX after recording, it might be better to just add the FX afterwards and then freeze the track anyway.

ssd does not sound as warm and authentic as a hard disk, I went to this audiophile event where blind tests were ran and people could not believe the difference between the two. sinatra sounded lifeless and dull on a ssd drive while the rpms of the actual disk reading the actual mp3 of the actual youtube video could be heard. magic.
