I save raw vegetable scraps, egg shells, fruit peels etc and when I have enough to run through the blender I add some water to the mix and blend it into a thick soup texture and pour it in the worm bed. My worms love it. The worm castings go in the garden. I also hunt worms in my backyard and add them to my raised bed gardens to help enrich the soil.

Hi. I want to raise worms for my garden and for composting a little. Did you ever make that video on changing the bedding for your worms? If not, can you give me the basic instructions--just kind of a 10 Commandments version of changing out the dirt? Thanks! Also, is there a certain temperature they need maintained? Obviously, a lot of worms are going outside in my garden, but the ones I am trying to raise and breed will either be inside or outside depending on what temperature they need. We live in Texas, so summers are hot and winters get down to about 30 degrees on the coldest days. Thanks!

HELP! IF its mites can I kill them in my worm bed or do i have to remove and wash the worms and start over ? BUMMER!
@fannyhuang50499 жыл бұрын
Go online and search mite images and see if it is mites.If it is then get ur worms out immediately but don't wash them,then get rid of the mites and ask worm experts what to do and meanwhile keep the worms somewhere safe with soil and food.U can also research online if u don't know any worm experts
@pamelaschoppeebortz2239 жыл бұрын
VN Dustoff Most people that grow worms will tell you that worm farms have mites. It is part of the process. If you feed your worms a lot of fruit (esp melons, watermelons, cucumbers) the mite population will increase. You can treat your bin with diatomaceous earth (I've had 'food grade' recommended to me) or you can drop in a melon rind, let it sit a day or two then pull it out. The mites will be drawn to it and you will knock the population down. Aside from being "yucky", the mites usually aren't a big problem.

Yes , but put everything through a food processor or blender to make a slurry. The worms will eat the slurry faster . Whole pieces will take months for the worms to eat . The worms will eat the slurry in two weeks . Worms have TINY mouths.

This is true, Trevor. However, certain "worm chows" are formulated so the worms will grow larger and be more active. Not to mention, the chows are fine and grainy. With that said if you decide to go with kitchen scraps its best that you make them as small as possible....creating MUCH surface area for microbes to assist with the decomposition process.
