Thank you for the video, it is obvious that you have put a lot of thought and work into your vermiculture project. One possible solution to most of the mess when using the hand sifters would be to make the wooden frames of the sifter to fit the plastic box. The sifters could be made so the lower portion of the sifter fits into the box and the outer portion or rail would ride of perimeter of the box. Then the box and the sifter could be held together while sifting. In this way, the sifted material would fall directly into the box below.

Along the same line. A frame to set on top of the bin with two rails to fit one side of the sifter screen. Slide the screen back and forth on the rails to sift. Less energy used, not shaking the whole bin.

Very interesting video. First time I saw a proven simple method for the small composter/ gardener to separate the castings, cocoons and worms, especially if you enjoy worm farming and composting as a hobby. You can always upscale at a later time if desired. The video should be reproduced with the cameraman face time removed and the camera placed overhead, looking down into the process. I know that this is a new you tube venture and believe that the reproduced video will be an even greater success. More videos please.

Nice harvesting technique. It would be even easier if you placed two 2x4 across your bin & mounted wheels under your screen/s. Then all you have to do is push & pull the screen/s back & forth over the 2x4s to perform your separation process. Letting the wheels take the stress instead of your body is a much easier method when done by hand.

Hi Matthew, I received the screens last week. I am 72 and my arms are not strong enough to hold screens and sift, I discovered best way for me is to use the black cement mixer. the screens fit perfect on top if it and they will slid back and forth on the short side. I use the 10 gal totes from WalMart, I feed one end for about a month. I have harvested two totes so far. Very few worms in the unfed end so was so easy and quick to harvest.

Definitely one of the best videos I've seen on harvesting. The ONLY one I've seen that goes into the kind of detail you did. It's obvious you know what you're doing. I greatly appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I was hoping you could help me out and answer a question. I've been farming worms for a few years now and my castings don't look much like yours. Mine is somewhat wetter. I only use fruits, veggies, cardboard and paper. Lots and lots of cardboard. The worms seem to be thriving fairly well, very few "runners" so I figure my environment is right; I see plenty of babies and some nice big worms (as red worms go). However, if I let the castings dry I basically get hard rock instead of that nice fluffy soil everyone is always talking about and that you show in your video. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? I'm using 18 gallon totes, with drainage holes and air holes. Thanks again!

Unfortunately, that's the nature of the beast. If you put a sheet of newspaper or corrugated cardboard in the screen and let the stuff dry out some, it'll help a lot. Need to keep some moisture to keep the bio-activity alive. How dry, how wet is all trial and error.

Hey, this video was very helpful! Do you happen to know any other ways to get rid of the worm eggs besides sieving them out? We have a machine to separate the castings from worms but we can afford to make another sieve or add on to the sieve we have to separate the eggs and a hand sieve is to small for our operation.

Add brown material (coco coir, cardboard, dried plant material) when you feed, don’t overfeed - if they can’t eat in a week what you added, it’s too much, and harvest or split the bin regularly.

Update on screens.... Please do a video using the black cement tubs. I like that the screens are light weight, and easy for me to handle using both at the same time. I can harvest one end of tote after not feeding one end for about a month. I leave that end uncovered so castings dry out a bit, amazingly fast. I always hated harvesting the totes because it took so long. I have tried several ways but the is the easiest of all. I have 12 totes so it use to be time consuming. Also easy to separate breeders from the small worms. Great product.

It's fine. They'll be okay unless you get real aggressive with the sifter(s). What's in your bin is vermi-compost. 1/4 inch screen lets castings, egg cocoons, small worms and some small size compost through. 1/8 inch screen sifts out most of everything but casting and well composted matter.

Tammy West. I've heard that if you feed your worms cornmeal that the ants will also take some of the corn meal back to their colony where it is consumed and they are unable to digest it and die. I am unsure of the accuracy of this however cornmeal does make good worm feed, and so giving it a try certainly would not hurt.
