I spent 17 years in the ready mix concrete business in NYC wearing Redwing 6" mocs. During that time I went through four pairs of boots each was resoled about every 2 years. While I know they have become popular with hipsters, they are absolutely more than a "fashion" boot. I wore them hard and after their break in they became as soft as glove leather. It is all very subjective. I have looked at both Danner and Thorogood mocs and for me nothing will ever take the place of a Redwing moc.

Thank you!!!! I’m tired of hearing people complain about the break in on the red wings and that thorogood is better, some things are subjective but it is a fact that red wings are better, if you want to work then wear 10875s and if you want to look badass while walking around then wear the heritage 875s.

First, i like that your usa tag is barely holding on. Then, I agree with everything you said, but I bought the thorogood 8" and I'm telling you, the break in two weeks was terrible. I read about break in and hang in there, I did it, but it was difficult. Im a carpenter and I build our family home as well, the thorogoods are great. theres no more leather on the right steel toe, but the stitching has held it together. there's hundreds of cuts and scrapes on the bottom of the sole, i regularly pull staples and nails from the bottom. theyve been great. and perfectly comfortable now, only thing ive added is a nice insole to the existing insole. my feet and my back do not seem to hurt this year as much. i wear them 6 days a week, 5 of those days over 10 hours a day. i do brush them once a month and put on the Obenauf's boot oil with the little applicator. i put it on the whole boot. yes, i do smell my boots and the inside still smells like leather, which i like.

I also own both boots. I've only had the RW 875 for several months and I've owned several pair of TG 814's. Although I find the cushioning of the TG initially more comfortable I have a hard time wearing them for long periods of time. Soft and cushioned does not mean support. The Leather foot-bed of the RW has a layer of cork underneath which eventually allows the foot-bed to somewhat conform to your foot. I still wear them both and the RW are hell to break-in but I have to say I like them for a long day of wear over the TG simply becasue of support and my lower back, hips and knees don't bother me the way they do with TG. It just goes to show you what works for one does not necessarily work for all.

I wore my TG x stream moc toe with the insole for a few weeks. Took off the insole and realized they dont need insoles and are roomy and comfortable as ever. I also have the Roofer's and Beloit and found out with similar results. Dont need the insoles, to me, personally, it just feels better and not overly cushy or restricting.

I'm the opposite. I have both of these boots and the loggers from both companies and I don't touch my Thorogoods even after work. Redwings are hard to break in but once broke they are very comfortable. The wedge sole on the Thorogood is better then the sole on the Redwing

I pretty much agree with everything you said here. I’ve owned both its and although I love my Red Wing heritage, it’s not something I can work in. Plus the soles only last me a few months, meanwhile the brand/type of soles on the Thorogoods are long lasting and I find the traction to be better, and more auto table for everyday work. Bigger toe box too. But I love the Red Wings anyway. And I like them Better in the looks department. Plus the leather will last longer, the Thorogoods are tumbled leather, which is why it feels softer. It’s already broken in, but the leather on the red wings are legendary!

You should really be comparing the thorogood to the red wing 1907. It is much more similar comparison. The 1907 has a nice insole, Norwegian welt and the leather is much more comparable to the thorogood. Also the width is about the same
@redneckbig11

The difference between the leathers on these two boots is, Redwing uses bull hides tanned from their own S.B. Foot tannery. Bull hides genetically are a tougher hide, it will last longer, and is more resistant to abrasions and tearing. It does make for a much harder boot to break in because of it being bull hide, but if you do the work, and break them in properly you’ll get a lifetime of wear out of them if cared for properly. Thorogood on the other hand their leather is heifer. Heifer hides aren’t nearly as tough and stiff, which makes them have a very short to almost non existent break in period. So yes they are comfortable pretty much right out of the box, and you can work on them right away, but I would rather have the break in time. To me if there is a break in period longer than a few weeks, that tells me the leather is tougher, and more durable, and in the long run will last longer. I own 7 pairs of Redwings, and I just got my first pair of Thorogoods, and yes the thorogoods, were very comfortable out of the box, but they have a long ways to go to catch up to my Redwings in wear time, my oldest pair of Redwings is going on 8 years of continuing wear, and if these thorogoods last that long then, I can say that the leather quality is up to par with Redwing. I work in all my boots too, the pair that’s 8 years old I’ve worn through 4 different jobs or more that I’ve had over those years and theirs still plenty of tread left on the soles.

i recently bought a pair of the thorogood based off of 2 things......reviews from co workers and price point. i took a chance and purchased a pair. the savings were nice and the easier break in time was far shorter. the thorogoods are just as comfortable and so far feel just as durable as red wing. time will tell. the red win is still a great boot but i have to admit i am liking the shorter break in time a lot. red wing makes great boots but spending 300 for casual shoes seems a bit pricey IMO

Ive been buying thorogood moc toes for about 10yrs now. Thorogood used to use a leather that was very similar to the redwing leather. It was a stiffer/harder leather to break in. Not quite as stiff as redwing but very close. I truly feel thats when the thorogoods were the best combo of materials used. Now, even though i still buy redwings and thorogoods, i feel that the leather is overly soft on the thorogoods. Redwings will last yrs. thorogood leather is spent after about a yr or 2 at the most as far as support goes. It stretches too much and becomes quite floppy. Still a very comfy boot but for work i need more support. I may try the 814-4203 next. Its made with crazy trail horse leather which is a stiffer leather. But either way, theres no way i could work in the 875’s. Its purely a casual boot in my collection. Also, redwing’s soles are straight garbage

Give the Redwings more time, it doesn’t look like you have them completely broke in yet. It takes about 100-150 hours of actual walking time, but once you get that hard leather insole broke in and it molds to your foot they will be the most comfortable boots you own. I hated mine when I first bought them and thought I wasted my money and I let them sit in my closet for over a year. When my Thorogoods (which I love by the way) gave out I reluctantly started wearing my Redwings everyday and now are currently my favorites. I have a pair of Nick’s boots on order. I hear good things about their legendary comfort after break in, so we will see...

The redwings are painful and misery...until you man up and let the cork do its thing. Now they feel like house slippers and it’s hard to imagine more comfort. Like an old baseball glove. Just picked up some moc toe Danners in black and they feel like tennis shoes, comfy but unstable. If you are a redwing guy you know what I mean, solid platform to stand on vs squishy. Going to try the Thorogood’s next. Thanks for the review!

only thing about my thorogoods are the moc toe is NARROW i wish the boot guy that measured me was honest enough to tell me to order the wider size. its prob all he had in stock and needed the sale. the first few months were hell. once it broke in and i started using thinner socks and changed the insole with something thinner it gave me a lil room in there. now they feel like damn slippers. i find at the end of the day i could leave my boots on or almost forget there even on. the toe is just to narrow order a wider size guys your pinky toe will thank you for it.

might i add this style of boot is timeless. throw on some carhartt or shmidt carpenter pants and they just blend in especially once they get darker and dusty from work. they dont have that over the top style merrells or newer timb work pros have(if you see guys wearing those brands they stomp around the site even looking like their feet are throbbing). im not a flashy guy i dont need big yellow caution emblems or stupid shit like that on my boot. these are true workhorse boots. the more they get scuffed and dinged up the cooler they look. almost like they have a story to tell. but on another hand hit them with some oil and throw on some denim jeans and they stand out a little bit and really look cool without being too flashy. i dont even own sneakers. literally wear these boots 24/7.

The factory will completely redo your boots for $90 or $125. that includes stitching, inner/outer soles, cleaning and polishing, and even laces. There are a lot of comparison videos out on KZbin but I have never seen one talks about the weight difference. I've had both and I think the Thoroughgood are lighter and more comfortable. I work in industrial construction and a lot of my co-workers wear Thoroughgood's.

The more you wear red wings, the more they mold to your foot and feel like a custom made boot. I wear red wings 8 hours a day everyday and they're way more comfortable than thorogoods after being broken in. Building a 3 story building out of structural rated metal studs, being in a boom lift and on concrete all day outside in the cold. Prefer the red wings all day. Just an all around better boot. I'd consider red wing top tier and thorogoods mid.

i own three pairs of rw boots. 2 pairs 10875s and one pair of 8138s. my main pair of 10875s that i wear for work have done me well for 3 years now (i just re-soled them this spring). i have given them plenty of opportunity to break down, but they keep going strong. no, i am not a logger, fireman or welder, but i do general carpentry, and they work perfect in that respect. the other two pairs i wear casually. to me--and i have very dogs that will bark instantly--they are the most comfortable boots/shoes i have ever worn. and the most durable. i tried a pair of the thorogoods (same ones you have in the video) a couple years ago, but i gave up on them inside of a week. they were basically sneaker quality leather (to me), and the lining and insoles were likewise...sneaker quality. if you can stand a week or two (tops) of moderate discomfort while breaking in the red wings, you will be rewarded with years worth of comfort. once the leather insole molds to your foot, you basically have a custom pair of boots. sneaker/hiking boot insoles have their purpose; but to me, it ain't when you're working. i've spent countless 10 to 12 hour days on my feet in my red wings (in all seasons), walking distances, climbing ladders, you name it; and the last thing i ever think of are my feet. that's how good they've been to me. but everyone has their own choices. thanks for making the video. the more information that's put out there, the better.

Yeah, the casual/fashion market seems to be RW's angle with the heritage line. The Redwingheritage.com website's promo photos render this an open and shut case - Absolutely no photos of industrial environments underfoot like other work boot manufacturers. And in their "Faces of Redwing" section, the only people they highlight are basically hipsters and vintage life-style adherents. None of the heritage line is offered with any kind of safety-toe materials which basically halves the working-class consumer base. Cork midsole? Fashion and homage were definitely their primary concerns.

Red wings all day🇺🇸Thorogood is instant gratification red wings are in acquired taste take more time and patience The Thorogood is engineered to sell the modern day inpatient millennial worker who wants a sneaker And as far as the red wing sole it’s softer that’s why it wears out it’s more comfortable cushier so you don’t have to put a modern day insole Old school cork in leather insoles for the win 🇺🇸 And the red wings are thicker too throw a micrometer on them

Charles Graham Thanks for the comment. I totally agree, the Redwing will most likely last longer. I wear Thorogood boots doing heavy Constuction. I’ve worn both on the jobs. The Thorogood is my go to for the comfort.

I was a handlaster at a shoe company for 5 years. The leather that is used is key to the quality of any shoe. Our company used cheap Mexican leather, and the shoes were junk. . It sounds like from all reviews I have seen, Thoroughgood uses the highest premium leather, and that is what makes all the difference. I'm saving up to get me a pair.

Jim Feaster Nice . I like both . I would have to say it really depends on the job I’m doing as to which boot I would choose for the day. I have really put the Redwing 875 to the test and I love it. I would choose Thorogood in most of my construction applications though.

Has anyone used these boots for roofing?? Im curious on the grip
@maxwellhouseranch1004
@maxwellhouseranch1004 5 жыл бұрын
Miguel Saenz Yes they are great as long as the conditions are dry. A bit slick when it’s wet. I would go with the Danner mountain 600 for roofing. The grip is second to none. The 4.5” model works great and they grip like Spider-Man. The lace to toe design allows for more flexibility in your foot. The drawback, not made in the USA, however they are extremely comfortable, waterproof, and ultra lightweight.

Redwing quality is much better than the thorogood. Just got my 1st pair of 814-3600 because of all the reviews. The quality is o.k at best but they are comfortable. Let’s see how they hold up.

Redwing 875 are heritage boot line not a work boot. You should really compare apples and apples if you're looking for a true work boot.
@maxwellhouseranch1004
@maxwellhouseranch1004 5 жыл бұрын
TheDobbermn I am comparing apples to apples, if you look at the Redwing line they talk in absolutes about this boot being a work boot. Like I said in the video I’m not putting Redwing down, in my opinion Thorogood makes a more comfortable durable work boot. Bottom line.
@TheDobbermn

@@maxwellhouseranch1004 They may say that, but the heritage line of redwing boots are for hipsters with skinny jeans and fancy beards. Their actual work boot line are a better comparison. The redwing 405 would be a better comparison.

I think neither are working boots. They are just a casual good looking boots perfect under a indigo jeans. I prefer the RW, a clear classy design a way better than a heavy line like Thorogood or Timberland. Speak about wearing comfortable: i've wear my RW 8131 over a week walking around Amsterdam this holiday summer, all day long like 8/10 hours walking...not a single problem comes out, more comfortable than a pair of sneakers.

MelchioDrum Thorogood may be the most trusted work boot in America. Iron workers almost universally regard them as THE boot to work in. With all do respect, I don’t think you know what you’re talking about.
