THOROGOOD 814-4200 Moc Toe *6 MONTH REVIEW*

I have both Red Wing and the Thorogood. I love them both. The red wing is a no frills hard core boot. Very strong, stiff leather, leather footbed, leather welt, cork filling, a bitch to break in, but the longer you wear them the better they get. The outsole doesn't last as long, but any cobbler can replace it with the Vibram equivalent. The Thorogoods are really underrated. The leather is the same thickness as the red wing but its tumbled to make it softer. The footbed is poron and fiberboard. The welt is synthetic. So yeah they have saved some money using these materials, but the boot is cheaper as well. And these are well made boots that are really comfortable. The more I wear mine the more I like them. The Thorogoods can easily be resoled with a Vibram wedge or you can order the Thorogood soles and take them to your cobbler. Both are awesome boots. Depending on how you use them they could last a long, long time, perhaps for life. If you're doing trades or construction work, go with the Thorogoods. Theyre more comfortable right away and you won't be out as much money when you do wear them out, and you will wear either boot out with that type of use. For general purpose daily wear and if I could only have one it would be the red wing due to the leather footbed, cork filling and leather welt. That could last a lifetime and any cobbler can service them. That said a good cobbler could repair the Thorogoods indefinitely as long as the uppers were in good shape. Great video!

I’ve owned redwings and thorogood boots and my experience is that the sole on the thorogood boots last so much longer than redwings.

Working in construction, I usually get a year out of my thorogoods. They’re the most comfortable boot I’ve ever worn but they definitely don’t last. The red wing leather is far tougher but the soles are rubber and wear down faster. For a job site go thorogood. For going out go red wing. Also the cotton inside the toe box has been worn out on mine just 6 months in. But I haven’t gone through the leather anywhere.

love mine 8 inch model at 6 months of hard use still had lots of life. now at 3 and a half years old hole in my mock toe from crawling around still going strong!!!

I bought some Thorogood's about the same time as you, I also have a couple of pairs of Red Wings which I won't slag off as I love them, but I agree with your comments about the Thorogood's having harder wearing soles (by a long way), and they are much more comfortable, I'm like you and have ended up wearing them far more than my Red Wings. My Thorogood's are the 6" plain toe model which I bought instead of Chinese made Timberland's, they are far superior.

Hi Bert, I take a size 9 UK in RW's but my Thorogoods are a Size 9 US. So around half a size down. They fit perfectly and are so much more comfortable than the Red Wings.

Mine have plenty of room in them. The only thing if you are not sure is that the TG's already have a gel insole in so if you buy them too big, you can't add in an insole to pad them out like you can with RW's. Where do you live, is there a dealer nearby you can try some?

@90hrs + a week hard use outdoor year round you can expect 6months on the sole and around a year on the toebox if you work on your knees for any length no matter the epoxy or toe cap installation. Heat @200 in the oven a few minutes and slather on the Snoseal and rock them straight out of the box. The waterproof lining ones seem to have a little break in compared to the unlined.

I agree with you and endorse what other viewers have said about the Christy soles. After a short period of wear, the back of the boots really looks "be-draggled," and "shoddy." Others have replaced the soles with the dark Vibram lugs, which not only look better, but, like these Thorogood soles, wear much longer with integrity of support. One thing to look for . I just bought a pair 814-4140 black sole . My inside ankle bone is sore on my right foot only . I wear an 11.5 wide . I brought my old pair to swap out half way thru the day . I normally wear the moc toe but wanted to try a different sole . My old pair is Irish setter 807 very good cushion no problem with break in at all . The are all most identical boots only the red wing has more padding . And the tung on the thorogood is a little tuff to get used to.The Thorogood kind of reminds me of the Sears Die Hard that I used to buy . The break in is similar, tuff at first but once there broke in I'd wear them with a suit there that comfortable.

You made up my mind when you said plastic welt. I'm a (Former) shoe repair person (3 generations) and plastic welts can't compare to all ALL leather boot. Also, while I realize it always comes down to personal preference. All ALL leather (No cotton lining) is better (IMO) because that liner WILL fail eventually. I DO like your reviews though. Keep up the GOOD work. On your R.W. if you want to emphasize the golden and minimize the red. Use a Lincoln mahogany wax.

FYI, it's only a double stitch on the sole, the third stitch is a fake. They can be resoled still tho.

It's funny that the super-cheap Diehard boot has the tough-as-iron outer sole that never wears out (combined with a soft wedge middle) and the super expensive boots like the Red Wings have a sole that wears very quickly.

Hi I found true to size to work fine for me! I would just add that whilst these are very comfortable and easy to live with, they may not hold up as well as red wings, if you havent had a look at the 875s, or may be even the Sawmills, it may be worth checking them out!

Nice review, sir! Just wanted say, I used to wear Red Wings back when they were all made here in the USA. The old ones were great but did, as you say, take a long time to break in. I then found some US-made Carolinas; awesome but they got stolen. Tried some Chinese-made Redwings as replacement: lame. And then I found my Thorogoods. These boots become practically an erotic thing to put on your feet, after really not that long. As you've probably discovered by now, they're amazingly comfortable. And trust me, after at least 5 years, maybe more, I've yet to see even a hint of the leather failing. Anyway, thanks for the nice review!

Depending on what kind of work you do, I’d resole with a Vibram lug or a replacement Thorogood/Vibram wedge. I went for Vibram lugs and Thorogood insoles.

I just picked up a pair of these today and the boot fits well everywhere but i noticed a little slippage in the heel, no more than half an inch or so. Ive seen a few other reviews of this boot that also mention that and say that the slippage decreases as the boot breaks in. Have you experienced this at all? I'm a 13 in pretty much every boot I've worn, so i grabbed a 13 in these as well. I've heard people say that going down a half size was a perfect fit for them but seeing as how these do not have a size between 12 and 13 I went with my regular size. Awesome videos by the way.

They are holding up well, they are in rotation with some other boots, but certainly more robust than the Red Wing Christy sole.

Andrew Poulson +1 Welder here, I've worn mine for 2 years and step on hot slag consistently. They are still among my first choice over newer boots. Just now getting some new ones in the darker brown.

Hello DevonReviewer, thanks for the great review of the Thorogood and the Thorogood vs the Redwing. I am wearing several redwing moctoes at the moment but planning a pair of Thorogoods 814. Would you recommend the same size for a Thorogood shoe. My normal siz e is a UK9 but i downzized a half size . The last Redwing i bought was in 9 and it defenitely feels better with an insole.

Hi I didn't downsize for either the RWs or Thorogoods, they are very similar sizing. I would say the Thorogoods are slightly wider.

I work in highways, but spend very little time on site... in the UK it is steel toe all the way so this type of boot is not popular at all... If I had to choose one, for comfort and long lasting sole, it would be Thorogood.

Diehards are all Chinese. I wore the U.S. Diehards for years. I went in and they had changed, I bought a pair, wore them for a few hours, and took them back to the store for a refund. Never went back again. The last pair of U.S. made ones I had was bald and years old, the inside actually fell apart from the rubber just dry rotting. I was so sad because they were so comfortable to wear.

Have to agree with you. Diehards are not what they used to be. I also dont think you can compare Diehards to Thorogoods or Red Wings. Diehards are a great starter boot, but nowhere near the quality or look of the US made Thorogoods and Red Wings.

I know this is very late..but you can check thorogoods size chart. I almost went with a full size down but went with a half size smaller because thats what the chart said I should get. I can always exchange for a smaller size if need be which does suck but hey I'd rather wait a little longer than have a boot that doesn't fit right. If you got a pair how are they? Or how were they?
