You should have really prepped you metal better... I'm a aerospace welder by trade... Take time to clean the mill scale off.... The cleaner the metal the better!
@RODDDDify
@RODDDDify 6 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more, welding over mill scale isn't always a good idea ...you can make a beautiful looking weld but it could be laying on top of the scale..from my experience anyway. Grind a bevel on the butt welds as well, especially on the perfect miter cuts in the vid.

I mount the fenders about an inch back from centre - because as the springs flatten with load the axle moves to the rear - just looks better and eliminates the possibility of the tyre rubbing on a tight fitting fender

I got a quote today for the steel. $281.00 but i forgot to put the metal grating on my quote, but since it's flat and not expanded grate, i'm sure it will be $50.00 or less, so add that on about... $330.00 for the steel. $200.00 for the wood deck if you use pressure treated lumber, and you can get an trailer build kit with the axles and everything for about $600.00. you can build this trailer for around $1,100.00

The way I pack bearings without making a mess is I put them in a zip lock baggie with a big blob of axle grease. Seal it up and you can work the grease into the bearings without getting it everywhere.

Ive worked in Collision Shops all my life as Bodyman / Painter. Rust is my enemy. I noticed you have a lot of bare metal under pieces you can’t treat. I think I may use an Etch Primer or Direct To Metal Sealer on all my pieces then grind were I need to weld. Its a paint to have to stop and grind each weld area, but I think it will be worth the effort. I did something like this a while back and after i treated the metal I only used a cheap grinding wheel on my drill to clean the metal enough to weld. Prior to paint I also seal joints and all welded areas rot prevent water from resting in those areas. I know its overkill, but as the say9ing goes-……..f its worth doing, its worth doing right.

Great job my friend. This is what I do for a living. And the one thing I would consider doing if using gussets on your trailer tongue to the frame this will really add a lot of strength. But overall you killed it man good job
@bendiede7982
@bendiede7982 3 жыл бұрын
By gussets, do you mean angle iron running perpendicular to the A-frame tongue? Or do you mean run some solid flat iron to fill in the angled corners where the tongue meets the trailer frame?

I've been welding and fabricating for over 37 years and I'll have to say you broke everything down and explained it in lamens terms that anymore will understand. Great job on the build. Great video 👍👍. Anyone who wants to know why welders charge so much to build something or repair something, now know why the price might be higher than YOU thought, I'd refer them to this video.

I thought the axle goes under the lead springs. Seems to be that way with all the trailers I see. I questioned it the minute he set them up sitting above the axles. That would put all the force on the Ubolts?

On a lot of the 3500lbs and under trailer axles always go the way he has them. they actually come bent from the factory with the mounts on them to fit this way. If you turn them around and put them on under the leaf springs then you'll have a lot of camber in them. they bend the axles that way so that empty it will sit with a slight caster. fully loaded they will flatten out supposedly.

Very nice! I've been wanting to build a trailer, and now I know basically what's involved. When I get ready to start building, I'll probably need to come back a couple of times to get more details. Your trailer is every bit as good as one of those Lowe's trailers, and THEN some. In fact, your trailer is worth much more than a comparable "Corner Store" trailer. Thanks for the video.

the 60% rule for axle placement. How would an extended trailer tung effect this? I am going to build a 7X11 trailer. I'm towing it with a Jeep that has a swing out tire carrier and swing out tailgate. I want enough tung length not to interfere with the tailgate and tire carrier. Should I modify the 60% rule any?

Big problem with your trailer, In the UK the Law states that gross weight of a trailer that has no brakes must not exceed 750KG, your trailer must weigh more than that without even having a load on it. so it will be illegal to pull it on the road even when the trailer is empty :(
@Reman1975
@Reman1975 3 жыл бұрын
A little useless info for everyone. Here in the UK, if you build yourself a new trailer you need to pay to have it "Type approved" and then fit a "VIN" style plate to it that shows curb weight, and maximum all up weight. This means it's pretty much stuck with the make and models of all the components you fitted when it was tested. There's also another big limiting factor once it's plated. If your car can only tow a trailer with a maximum weight of (As an example) a ton, you can't tow a trailer with a maximum loaded weight of over a ton, even if it's completely unloaded and only tips the scale at 300kg (660lbs ?) you can't drag it with that car !!! On the other hand, trailers built before this test came in have "Grandfather rights" that allow them to keep being used. Original parts may be out of production, so rather than have people risk using worn out bits to avoid type approval, the law leaves it almost entirely open as to how you "Repair" (or modify) it to keep your older trailer road legal. If you want to replace it's rusted angle iron chassis and build one bigger that's made from larger box section, no problem. Are your spindly little suspension units not up to the load your new bigger deck may put on them? No ones going to stop you swapping the lot for leaf springs and a live axle (with bigger wheels and brakes if you like). If that pressed metal towing hitch doesn't look up to the job, go put a new cast one on, and those old lights just look shabby now you've fixed everything else up.......... You've now got a new trailer that doesn't need testing. :D The biggest benefit is that an "Old" unplated trailers maximum load is whatever you say it is, so if your car can tow a ton, then that's what the trailers max loaded weight is. As long as a department of transport inspector can't point at any component and show that it wasn't rated to at least what you say the max loaded weight is, you're golden. It also means that when you change cars you don't have to worry about whether or not it will still be allowed to tow your current trailer. The only problem here is if you want to take your "Old" trailer out into Europe when you go on holiday. They want all trailers that go on their roads to be type approved, but 99.99% of the home modified ones here wouldn't be used for this anyway, so it's not a problem.

Fabulous series! It's. been 35 years since I stick welded a utility trailer, and I had forgotten much of the detail work that I had worked through, but your very detailed series brought it all back. My last trailer was made with tubular steel, which was very rigid and steel was cheap then. It made for natural routing for wires. Has steel gotten prohibitively expensive since then? I'll be building a 14 footer for a BX Kubota tractor with a front end loader and possible 3pt accessories this time, and using MIG. Your angle steel looked rigid enough, but I will have to research load tables to see what I need. Any suggestions?

What size axle would I need if I had to carry machines around that were roughly 2500 pounds. I don't think that I would ever carry a machine that would be more than that. What I'm doing is I buy machines and I fix them up old machines like old metalworking equipment and I make him like new again I'm tired of bothering other people for their trailers and I wanna build my own I'm a fairly decent welder not a expert by any stretch but I can do this project I believe. I don't know how to spec an axle out I'm sure that there are sales people that will tell me one thing but I'd rather ask someone that he's done it before. Thank you for your help

Haha Buy the time I buy the axle and everything thing else I’ll have more in it than I could buy a new one for. I really want to do this but this axle problem is holding me up. 😞 Thanks for the video. If you could let me know where to start to buying a axle that would be great! That's a nice trailer but the safety chains should be mounted to the bottom of the tongue so when you cross the chains Incase the trailer comes loose the tongue gets cradled in the chains and doesn't nose dive in the ground and you can safely come to a stop with out the trailer thrashing around the vehicle

I agree. The axle should be under the spring and not on top of it. It might make it lower having it on top, but you lose all the axle travel when hitting bumps and also lose the weight carrying capacity. With it on top, you are carrying all the weight on the U-bolts. With the axle under the springs, then all the weight is transferred to the leaf springs and not the U-bolts. The U-bolts are there to keep the axle lined up with the springs, and are not meant to carry the weight.

Anybody who builds a trailer from this video build it at your own risk. This trailer is not safely put together. For one..... ya never ever put anything inside the areas of your leaf springs. DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS GUY!

Thankyou for this series. I am wanting to build my own trailer, but I have never welded before. I looked at a few welders and Im wondering if a CHICAGO ELECTRIC 80 Amp Inverter Arc Welder from Harbor Freight would work to build this trailer?
