In the late 1980's, a brilliant wordsmith named Tom Chesek created a musical alter-ego named Reed Linkletter. Reed told stories or just laid down beat poetry with a musical backdrop provided by the Golden Nehru Flamethrowers, which was in fact two of Tom's friends, John McBain and Tim Cronin (who would soon be helping to form Monster Magnet), credited as a crew of five musicians.
Reed put out three cassette tapes (informally released on a local imprint called "Cool Beans Records") which were sold on consignment at Jack's Music and the Red Bank Mini Mall. This video contains a couple of my favorites from the first two,
"No Neck and Bad as Hell" is just John McBain, a musical genius who went on to do Monster Magnet, Hater, The Wellwater Conspiracy and a couple of solo releases. According to Tim, the Golden Nehru Flamethrowers was "me on drums and John on basically everything else."
Tom Chesek recently passed away, far too soon. I decided that Reed should be preserved, so here you go.
If you are intrigued by Tom's wordplay, Google "Tom Chesek Red Bank" and you'll find various articles and reviews written by him.
Rest in Peace, Tom. I will always be a massive fan.
