Reed switches are the reason people with older pacemakers or defibrillators are told to avoid high magnetic fields from metal detectors and such. There was a chance that the switch could get stuck in an open position. Cardio devices are replaced every 5 - 12 years as battery dies.

Hello my friend. I watched this interesting information curiously. I didn't know the Reed key was invented. Nice information about the magnetization event details. thank you for sharing. See you. great greetings.

Reed switches have a pretty solid pedigree of durability and reliability. Even so, they have been replaced by Hall effect sensors in situations that call for a higher degree of precision. Hall effect sensors are faster than reed switches because they’re solid-state devices-no need to wait those few milliseconds for the magnetic field to overcome inertia. The downside of Hall effect sensors is that they need constant power to operate. That’s because they have to be ready at all times to sense the presence of a magnetic field. They’re also finicky about the position of the magnet and won’t register the Hall effect if the magnet is orientated improperly.

Only a 100 ohm pull-up? Isn't that way too low of a resistance? An arduino nano works with a maximum logic level of 5 volts, and each IO pin can supply a maximum of 20 milliamps. By using a pull-up resistor of 100 ohms a current of 50 milliamps will flow when the reed switch is closed. (V/R=I, 5V/100 = 0.05A) And 50mA is exactly 2.5× as much as the maximum of 20mA, so there is a very high chance that using a 100 ohm pull-up resistor for the reed switch will damage your arduino! I recommend you use AT LEAST a 1000 ohm (1k) pull-up resistor, and a 10.000 (10k) resistor would be even better. A general rule of thumb is that, unless there is a good reason to do otherwise, a pull-up or pull-down resistor should never be lower than 1k! I recommend that you always start with a 10k resistor and if that turns out to be too high, then you try lower values. Keep in mind that a pull-up or pull-down resistor is (often) constantly allowing a small current to flow, and thus comsuming power. The lower the resistor value, the more power is wasted.

Thank you for mentioning this of this too low resistance 100 ohm ;)

@@davidjobe9876 you're very welcome, David 😁👍 No matter how little time it took, thank you for taking the time out of your day to write a reply, I am really happy this information was of some use to you! Additionally, thank you very much for your kind words 😁 My ramblings below can be freely ignored if you are in a hurry or skipped all together if you can't be bothered with all that 'tacky and girly feely stuff' right now. Otherwise, please read on. These days I feel as if there is this aura of negativity everywhere I turn. All those who keep the cycle going, those who perpetuate the negativity don't realize and fail to see the vile and repulsive veil covering their world. No attention is paid to the thriving negativity all around, never noticing it infecting everything they touch and everyone unfortunate enough to come into contact with them. They themselves don't get to experience the hurt inflicted by the sting of their tainted words. My sincere apologies for wearing my heart on my sleeve, it is just that receiving a notification that someone commented on my post usually entails a whole lot of swearing, name calling and other assorted negativity. This time I was very positively surprised by your kind comment, I am currently plowing through what can only be described as a truly awful day, a prime candidate for one of the worst of my life to be honest, and your comment couldn't possibly have come at a more opportune time. That single comment of yours just improved my day by at least a thousandfold! Thank you for your positivity David 🤗🥺☺️

@@TheBauwssss I certainly don't discount the creator of the video. This was well explained but had lost sight of a small detail with that resistor value ;) Yesterday I happened to find 2 reed switches in an old humidifier. And happened to come across this video on youtube. I have had an Arduino Uno for years but it is now eating dust, I am afraid to do something wrong and break it. It's a terrible time right now with Corona conditions, everyone is in a rush and driving like fools on the road. Keep up the courage, better times are sure to come and certainly keep your head high. Keep safe and healthy ;)
