I want to correct a miss speak. The bonsai wire is aluminum with coating, not copper. The coating allows me to minimize any leaching of aluminum into the tank if I needed to spray my mangrove trees. I super glue the cut ends of the wire to cap off the exposed metal end.

Great video, glad to see some good information about how to grow mangroves. I have been growing a few for many years and have used many of the techniques Tyler mentioned, especially growing them out of saltwater for a few years, then converting them into the saltwater environment. Also, Remy you are my favorite presenter on Reef Builders, I hope you stay with them and continue. You should be the face of Reef Builders.

Love the video and great info. But it takes a lot more than 3 years for a red mangrove to give birth to propagule seeds. I would say at least 10-15 years. That's just a guess but I have many that are 3 years old and they are still only around 2-3 feet long.

Can mangrove roots eventually break the glass or acrylic of your aquarium? 🤔
@ReefBuildersVideo8 ай бұрын
According to Julian, yes, it is possible. Not likely, but possible. ~Remy

I’ve never actually seen one break a tank but the prop roots do have some power. I’m more concerned about the prop roots pushing against the opposite panes of glass and blowing the tank out that way. I can see where my trees hit the seam of the tank where the silicone is at and they usually just bend and travel along the silicone or divert in a different direction. It’s definitely possible but i don’t think it’s something that will happen overnight though

How long to grow a mangrove in your tank like Tyler's? Just curious
@ReefBuildersVideo8 ай бұрын
Tyler might pop in here with the answer but it usually takes a couple years to get significant growth. Like he said in the video, once that root structure is set, the canopy will start to take off. ~Remy
@Ichthys_Aquatics8 ай бұрын
@@ReefBuildersVideo Correct. I have some that are about the same as his and it has taken 3-4 years I can't recall at this point. Growing them out in freshwater in a pot then, transferring them to saltwater is the best way to go if you want to speed up the process.
@inland_reef8 ай бұрын
My mangroves range from a couple years to some over 8-10 years. They don’t look as large as I constantly cut them back and shape them as I really can’t raise the lights up any higher.
@carlholmberg73038 ай бұрын
Does cutting the mangroves back also inhibit the root growth? In bonsais you occasionally prune the roots, but with what Tyler said about the “bleeding out” it seems that would be problematic.
@inland_reef8 ай бұрын
@@carlholmberg7303 I haven’t seen any inhibition when I cut the mangrove canopy. Typically the tree will just put more resources into more branches and possibly root growth if needed. I have and will cut the mangrove roots similar to a bonsai tree in the near future awe I don’t want the roots pressing against the sides of the glass tank. When I do that, I just cover the cut end of the roof with super glue.

Do I need fertilizer to grow mangroves?
@inland_reef8 ай бұрын
It depends. When you have a young tree, I would say no. The waste from fish and other creatures in your tank will settle in the sand bed and become the necessary fertilizer. I add root tabs to the substrate now as my mangrove trees have grown quite large and have exceeded the nutrient uptake from the inhabitants waste. Another option is using some type of enriched substrate like two little fishies refugite or miracle mud and cap it with your ornamental sand as a way to help fertilize the roots as they grow.
@mryes4138 ай бұрын
@@inland_reef what about liquid fertilizer like seachem fertilizer?
@inland_reef8 ай бұрын
@@mryes413 I would worry that dosing liquid fertilizer could adversely effect what else is in the tank. I do dose nitrates for my macroalgae but not sure how much that helps the mangroves. Interesting thought to ponder though

For one if you are in the US, it might be illegal. You are only allowed to collect the propagules in most areas. Try getting them from propagules and growing them out in freshwater or in a pot like Inland suggested.
