Excellent. I'm about to setup my first Marine. Have made so many excuses about room. This tub method is excellent. I was going to buy all my fish and clean up crew in one go.

Cool setup by the way. Only prob is preventing jumping and visualizing the fish for parasites and disease.
@ReefNerd5 жыл бұрын
Should have mentioned, the lids that come with the plastic storage tubs make great jump guards, just loosely leave them on top of the QT tank, leave them propped up or slightly offset to allow airflow

So, basically just watch the fish, test your ammonia level constantly, keep them eating, use a media for biological filtration that is established, and watch for 30 days. I just got some fish that include a dwarf angle and a cleaner wrasse that I have discovered might be sensitive to cupramine (copper), so I really wondering what I can do. I would have liked to see a freshwater dip...I've heard 5 min using RO water at the right temp. Thoughts?
@alexman5203 Жыл бұрын
if he gets external parasite, copper is only option. Chelated copper is safer but also hard to get out of US and requires a test kit that costs $75 + extra reagents. FW dip does nothing for elimination, otherwise people wouldnt be waiting for weeks. They do however help with temporary relief if already suffocating (but formalin and rally pro are safer option than FW dip). If you dont want to risk copper, i heard tank transfer method is a thing but easy to mess up. Search up humblefish quarantine for better info in QT

Great channel, good to see an Aussie reefer channel... Can you do an in depth video on your experience and use of kalkwasser please. Would be good to hear your opinions. Thanks.

Great idea, I will put it on the list and do a deep dive into Kalkwasser in a future video

@@ReefNerd the only thing that confuses me is the "potency" of the mixture, the amount of powder to water ratio? Or it's a constant in the saturated "clear" part of the mix. No one really explains the concentration levels if any... Can the powder just sit at the bottom of the container and so long as its stirred or agitated every so often it replenishes the concentration of fresh water entering the reservoir?

I’ve been cycling my main display and also a 10 gallon Qt tank now for about 15 days. I’ve added one rock to my QT tank and two bio balls from someone’s established tank. I’ve been getting ammonia readings but no nitrite reading and a very low 0.3 nitrate reading. I want to have fish in there so when my main display finishes cycling they are ready but it seems as though the cycle isn’t going anywhere in the qt. What’s your suggestion for me. I’m new to the hobby
@talk2yous611 ай бұрын
No need to cycle the quarantine tank. Just bio media and if high ammonia you will need to do a 10- 20% water change

Storage tub is a great idea, but just wondering whether harder to inspect the fish compared with glass sided tank? Or practically doesn’t cause an issue?
@sameerjathar80623 жыл бұрын
Nice simple explanation on the quarantine aspect of the hobby.👍🏻 At what temperature should one keep the quarantine tank for the said period of 30days? same as the display or couple of deg above?. Also if being in a tropical climate, if the display tank temp is maintained with a chiller then is having a chiller manadatory or fans would suffice for the qt tank? Thanks
@ReefNerd3 жыл бұрын
Same temp as your display. Fans should be okay for your QT but test it first

Seems like it would hard to observe the fish well in a semi-translucent plastic tub.

Is there any reason why you can't have a quarantine tank with both fish and corals that same time, no copper treatment. i'm looking at setting up a quarantine without having 2 seperate quarantine tanks to separate Corals and fish.
@ReefNerd3 жыл бұрын
It would make it difficult address any issue you identify in quarantine. i.e. if a fish turns out to have Ich for example.... now you cant treat it as copper and TTM are incompatible with coral. And you would need to fallow the tank now for 72+ days as the coral have now been exposed to the ich lifecycle.

could you just use a 5 gallon bucket as a QT or not enough room for the fish to swim?
@ReefNerd4 жыл бұрын
Really depends on the number and size of the fish. But I would be worried about ammonia getting too high and being difficult to control so if you can go bigger like with a large plastic barrel or storage container I would do that.

What do you do after you get all of the fish? How do you keep all of the beneficial bacteria alive on it?

a 5 gallon cost me $17 dollars in petco. you can probably pick up one used for $10

Great video Marcus, you just put to bed a dozen excuses for not quarantining. BTW I brought a 40lt tank with lights, hood, heater and filter for $120. You only need to look around the forums and Gumtree etc. To find a bargain you can use

Won’t prime toxify copper?
@ReefNerd3 жыл бұрын
I believe it can dependent on the type of copper used. On seachems website they have specific instructions for which copper is safe to use with Prime and which is not

If the life cycle of all common ailments are up to 7 days on the fish, why do a 30 day qt?
@ReefNerd3 жыл бұрын
its not quite that simple... the lifecycle of a specific individual parasite of an ailment (such as marine ich) may be short... but the fish wont be infected with a single Ich parasite... it will have many, all at different ages, and all at different stages of their lifecycle.... the fish may also not show any symptoms during the initial stages of infection... it may take a week or two before the symptoms from the ailment become visible to you, the human.
@stravelakis3 жыл бұрын
@@ReefNerd so it is a week since symptoms show, not the total time it hangs on its body?
@ReefNerd3 жыл бұрын
@@stravelakis it really depends on what specific and exact ailment the fish has... they are all different... 30 days is just a catch-all in order to hopefully identify what the fish may have... IF it has something... you should see it within 30 days and then can treat it... if after 30 days you see nothing and the fish is fine, good chance is safe.

I learned the hard way. 180g fallow for 120 days. Remaining being treated in 2 quarantine tanks put together in sheer panic emergency. 8 days in tang might make it. I WILL NEVER NOT QT. 2000.00 in fish lost in hours, yes hours. Boom it hit fast from a batch of snails. VELVET. I use tubs from hardware store. And old equipment. Lol. It's not so bad, wish I did it before. Uggggg. I'm pushing on. NO PRIME WITH COPPER PEEPS.
