I read in the internet one recipe that works great for me with my Chinese “senkos”. Forget the coffee, it’s more simple than that: mashed cloves of garlic, salt and extra virgin olive oil. Put this mixture into a small plastic bag so as to smear your plastic lures. I’ve caught many big bass with my Chinese senko imitations (lead free) using this garlic ointment. By the way my “senkos” were double colored lengthwise: light green and pink.

granular salt will dissolve in water. no need to powder it first. the oil did not mix with the coffee. it was still floating on top.
@MrBilld757 жыл бұрын
Now there is real Science. The fact that he said it makes it "water soluble", is not true. Water does not make oil, water soluble nor does anything else he used there. Lol. Oil is still oil in water and is hardly water soluble, right? Hahaha! For that you need a chemical blend or heat. Even with heat, it's not really water soluble, just thinned out so it blends with the water better. Chemistry is the only way to make oils mix with water properly.

Oils inhibit catching predatory fish - Tons of info out there on the subject. Oils work for catfish, carp etc. who hunt by feel and smell, but Bass, Halibut, all predatory fish hunt by sight and taste. Rinse your mouth with oil and see how well you can taste sugar. It coats and inhibits taste. Mr Bass goes for your flashy lure, and promptly turns away or spits it out because there's no taste in the water or on the lure. Mr Bass isn't Italian or a vegetarian so he can't appreciate your Olive Oil. He eats meat. Only water based products will work ... unless you are after mud fish.

Fish attractant is not just meant to smell good to fish it's also to mask more unnatural smells like anything on your fingers. That being said a little olive oil and garlic salt it will mask your finger smells aswell as attract, I've also found using white vinegar and fish oil is a nice cheap attractant and the northern Canadian fish I go for seem to really like the vinegar.
@swipersoixante95538 жыл бұрын
It will be effortless and cheaper if, after a nice sauce dipping meal go fishing with out washing your hands
@MrBilld757 жыл бұрын
Good point. I know people who rub fish scents on their hands, or fingers at least, for exactly that purpose and so do I. To mask human odours that might turn them off. They call that practice "Cover scents" and is popular in hunting too. Smart Hunters never use fragmented soaps to wash their hunting clothes or equipment and only use baking soda or Borax or unscented laundry soaps. One guy even went as far as to store his hunting clothes in a Rubbermaid bin, filled with earth, leaves, pine or spruce branches (or whatever is native to your area) and moss, so he would really smell like the forest. Lol. Not a bad idea at all. Of course now, they make scent blocking hunting clothing too. Animals are very sensitive to smell and if they are downwind of you, a strange smell could spook them off and it's quite proven. This same logic should also apply to fish, cause their sense of smell underwater, is very good. So, you are Canadian and fine this works huh Volcom? Well, I am Canadian Northern Canadian too (Northern Ontario) and I must give this trick a try. Vinegar and fish oil huh? Very interesting and I never considered vinegar, but hell, if garlic sometimes works and Coffee scents and Anise scent, then why not vinegar? So what fish are you going for that seems to like this?

At least for largemouth bass and other predators coffee and garlic don't make any sense. Predator fish don't eat vegetables or anything that smells like them. They react to fish and other animals scent. If you use only salt and if you use only garlic, bass will react better to the salt than garlic. That's because prey fish has salt in them. If you use prey salt instead of normal salt the results are even better. Instead of garlic or coffee you could get better results using prey fish or worms. In the book "Knowing Bass - The Scientific Aproach to Catching More Fish" they show the results of some experiments with scent and bass. Bass react better to a prey salt mix and even better to a worm extract than to garlic or anise, which get almost no reaction... It makes sense that they react better to smell and taste of the things they normally eat: fish, crawdads, worms...
@NelsonCreekOutdoors10 жыл бұрын
The reason some places use garlic, anise, etc., as it does effectively cover human scent on your lures. But "attractant" is probably too strong of a description. For catfish, this may work to some extent as they seek out odd stuff, but for game fish, yeah, forget it. Try www.nelsoncreekoutdoors.com for true fish attractants w/o the mess.
@DrFelonious10 жыл бұрын
You assume that fish interpret scents the same way humans do. Yeah, using natural feed sources makes sense, but it isnt the only approach. There are other issues like fish identifying food by amino acid leakage for instance that makes the whole subject a lot more complex than it seems.
@NelsonCreekOutdoors10 жыл бұрын
DrFelonious Actually, DrF, Marco is correct. This has already been studied. Those scents, garlic, etc., do NOT induce game fish to feed AT ALL. And they actually do interpret them similar to humans: they overpower everything else, hence masking human scent which has been shown to be a negative factor to fish.

Scent is not everything, contrary to popular belief. I've proven this with my own experimentation and from listening to expert Anglers. Presentation and bait changing if something is not working, is key. I've dropped fresh row bags in front of trout and Salmon, only for them to turn their nose up at it and it was literally right in front of their nose. Dropped a fly in, and bam. Done this with other fish too. Sometimes they are just not interested in your bait, no matter the smell. Smell is important, sure, but blood is also a key attractant and it's proven. Any kind of blood, cause it triggers an enzyme reaction in fish that they find hard to ignore. The "injured bait" logic and it works very well. The look of a bait is also a thing that turns the tables and how that bait moves. Change the retrieve or action of a bait and bam, they hit. You could have dragged that lure over their head dozens of times, but change the action, way it is rigged or speed, or color or some little detail like adding a feather or skirt etc. and presentation and all the sudden they are interested.

Could you use nonspray olive oil ??
@MrBilld757 жыл бұрын
Sure. I can't see why not and it's safer too. More natural. Any oil helps scents stick to a bait better/longer. Just please, don't do like some idiots do and use WD-40 or Vaseline or any other petroleum based product, cause that is not good for the environment. Any cooking oil though should be fine and I would like to experiment with some that I think might appeal to fish. Apparently lard is o.k. too or Crisco vegetable shortening and I would like to try Peanut oil, or Coconut oil sometime and see if the mild scent they have, triggers fish into biting better? Don't be afraid to experiment. That's half the fun and besides, using other oils is probably way cheaper than using chemical laced spray on oils. I could get FAR more mileage out of other oils, for cheaper than that spray on crap. Good luck!
