Little Richard never received the appropriate credit for his sheer vocal ability. Everyone focuses on his antics and sexuality but the man created Soul singing before the Soul genre really existed. He’s called the architect of Rock and Roll because his music was decidedly Rock and Roll but his vocal delivery….from the roughness in his tone to the screeching falsetto riffs, that was Soul singing.

Believe me, he is certainly recognized as a wonderful, unique singer. When I first heard his songs in the early 60's, most people didn't know he was gay. His fabulous energy and operatic range marked him as special. He was a genuine pioneer of early rock and roll.

The thing that most impresses me about his singing, is how musical it was as well as hard- edged. In all of his intricate licks he landed the notes brilliantly. With feel.

This is a classic! Little Richard first of all, no glitz, no glam. His attire was straight but his voice was in fine form. I was 12 when this tv show was aired in the UK. @@dctalk1117 Thank you, I was referring to vanilla with regard to his self proclaimed omnisexual identity which indeed was colorful along with the seemingly all "vanilla" audience in this video. @@beyourself2444 Richard NEVER toned down for white audiences or ANYONE, he was outrageous no matter who is audience was. He talks about it in several interviews and it is evident in several of his early performances in front of white people. Again, the only reason he appears toned down here is because just months prior he cut his hair, found religion, became a born again believer, and stopped wearing makeup and the stuff he used to wear. Just two years later he'd be back to the old Richard dressing outrageously in front of white and black people with no shame

My mom is from a little island in the Caribbean called Martinique. She told me that Little Richard's music really had a hand in desegregating the island. Although it was never legally segregated like some Southern States, Martinique has a long and terrible history with slavery colonization excetera. She told me that Little Richard music helped whites and blacks dance together in the 50s and then slowly things started to change. It was inconceivable in 1950s Martinique for a person of color and a white person to dance together, but they secretly did when The Rock and roll is good enough.

This must be his comeback to Rock and Roll(1964). Little Richard was the first real big casualty to the music. At the hight of his career, returning from a succesful tour in Australia with fellow rockers Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran in the Fall of 57 he just quit Rock for God, went religious studied the bible, became a preacher and so he came back about that time. The second casualty was Jerry Lee Lewis being kicked out of UK when media found out he was with his 13 yo bride but worse was when Dick Clark cancelled him on his return, was to appear on Americn Bandstand. Third casualty: Elvis when he joined the US Army in Aug 58. And now we come to the Day the Music Died No,1 (song by Don MacLean in 1971) when he talks of Buddy Holly's plane crash Feb 59, calling it the sad end of Rock and Roll. 1959 was a bad year with two No.1 by Frankie Avalone (Venus and Why) Bobby Rydell, Fabian, Bobby Vee etc. also Bobby Darin anouncing he quit Rock for big band ballads(Mack the Knife) was top song of 59. Also same year Tommy Sands announces he quit Rock and Roll. Yes 1959 was the year that Rock and Roll died! And Chuck Berry was in jail about that time and Cochran died in a taxi in UK in Apr 60. . . . .

Hi Maurice... It's cool to get interesting perspectives, but just like so much of the American experience, the history of Rock n Roll is "complicated" (Re: Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, Roy Brown, Little Willie John, Larry Williams, etc, etc) Sometimes it's as they say, "You kinda had to be there" in order to know the whole story, and the real truth of it all. Peace.

Great showman. Check out his performance the same year in Paris. Only downside is that Jimmy Saville appears in the intro at 0.13, and again at 7.35 and 22.24.

What a fun video to see! Thanks for putting it on You Tube. Little Richard put on a wonderful show! His shirt was totally wet with hard work sweat. What a great artist and the Shirelles did a great job too!
