Shrek was made as an intentional satire of Disney (the opening especially with Shrek using a Disney story to wipe, Fiona as a non traditional princess, pop soundtrack vs original songs, the more adult humor etc) as a kid friendly middle finger from the DreamWorks to Disney CEO who formerly fired them.
@the98themperoroftheholybri3319 күн бұрын
The producer or writer (I can't remember which) was fired from Disney, so this was sort of cathartic for him, that's why all of the fairytale creatures are Disney based stories but can't be an infringement of IP due to them being folk tales. And Duloc is a joke about Disney being sterile and soulless

Disney and Dreamworks had had a falling out, so it was more than a satire. The CEO at Disney at the time, Michael Eisner, was short, hence all the short jokes. And the name of the prince, "Lord Farquad," was a minor variation on the nickname, Eisner was referred to at Dreamwork, "F*ckwad."

Myers pushed the studio to use the Scottish accent since the start of production, but it was only after he finished his part that they agreed. The fact that he redid everything with the accent shows how strongly he felt about it. With good reason, since it's become one of the many little details that makes the movie so fun.

Not only was this movie a giant middle finger to Disney, it also saved Dreamworks. Dreamworks put their all into Prince of Egypt (good movie but nowhere near Shrek level) because they thought it would be big. They didn't even want to greenlight Shrek until Chris Farley signed on. Unfortunately he passed and Shrek had a major overhaul and story change because Mike Meyers didn't want to "replace" Chris. A running joke was that you got Shreked because you got sent to the Shrek team as punishment. The Shrek movies ended up being Dreamwork's top selling movies (not sure if this still holds true now).

Interesting Fact: Originally the character of Shrek was tailor made to be voiced by the late SNL legend Chris Farley, who had done some voice work in the early stages of the film while it was being made during the late 90's. But tragically he died of an overdose before he could finish it. So in honor of his dearly departed friend, fellow former SNL cast member Mike Myers stepped in to voice the beloved ogre in his stead. It definitely would have been an entirely different film with Farley. Rest in peace Chris, we love and miss you. 🙏❤️

I'm thinking now maybe they used that princess as a starting point as an inspiration for Fiona ? I could be wrong but I can see the creators of "Shrek" doing this ( an ogre instead of a swan , the whole point of this movie is to mock classic fairy tale clichés by making the characters foul-mouthed /ugly but self aware and hilarious, etc ) fun fact : the actor voicing Shrek is the same actor who played Austin Powers Merry Christmas and HNY

One of the interviews I remember from this movie back in the day was with Michael Myers on a day after all the vocal lines had been done they had one line they still needed to get from Michael Myers. The director actually got it from him in the back of a cab. It's the beginning of the speech to all the fairytale creatures in the swamp. A lot of times, the animators will design the characters to look like the actors who voice them. Like when Eartha Kitt did the voice of the witch in the Emporer's New Groove. They were actually able to also get a lot of her movements as well since she really got into the character while voicing her.

Shrek came out when my boys were young and I sat and watched it with them (more times than I can count) and I always enjoyed it because it is chock full of adult humor. I love the first two especially; the other two not so much. But don't let my opinion turn you both off from checking them all out regardless my friends. I am excited to see how the 5th one turns out when it releases eventually. 😁💚

Useless piece of trivia...Myers had actually recorded all of his dialogue before deciding it would be funnier if he used a Scottish (sorry BJ, not Irish) accent, mimicking the tone his mother used when she told him stories as a child. Shrek was also originally voiced by Chris Farley, who died five days before recording was finished. My elder lad, when he was two, was addicted to Shrek. Every day he had to watch it, and basically knew it by heart. It was hugely entertaining for me to observe him when we took him to see the second Shrek movie when it came out. He obviously thought it was gong to be he same movie, but when they started doing new things, he just sat and watched for a solid 45 minutes, which at the time was a record for him. :D The bright side of his addiction is I came to understand how my dad felt about the movie. He was Santa for a major retailer and they played it multiple times per shift to keep the waiting kids occupied. Like his grandson, he knew it by heart by the time New year rolled around, though he to this day still hasn't seen a single frame of the movie, and loathes it with all his heart.

This was so much fun. So there is an animated version of Rapunzel called Tangled. Same animation as this film with a lot of humor. You all would get a big kick out of it. Thanks or sharing and Happy New Year to you both. Tangled came out in 2010.☺

Hoodwinked is another good one where they make fun of little red riding hood. It's absolutely hilarious. And there is a Disney version of Robin Hood.
