@drewwesely88538 ай бұрын
Because it sucks. The series overall was so good, and then the end just falls flat like a wet turd. David Chase couldn't decide how to end it, so he took the coward's way out and just cut to black with no ending, intentionally frustrating the audience because he didn't have the ability to write an ending that could satisfy the massive audience. (The way that Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul or The Shield or The Americans or ST DS9 or multiple seasons of Fargo all ended with a satifying series conclusion.) Chase punked out, and called it "artistic license".
@DeadlyPimps7 ай бұрын
@@drewwesely8853 If you seriously believe this was a "cowards way out" of an ending a TV show then you're delusional. The cowards way out would've been to have them sitting at the table, the scene slowly fades to black over the music and roll credits. David Chase is clearly trying to imply something with this ending, something that for years fans of the show have tried to reject out of pure denial. For the entire 2nd half of the Season 6 they have established more than once that when you're shot in the head you hear and see nothing, it's instantaneous death. Bobby asks Tony "You probably don't even hear it when it happens right?" during the "Sopranos Home Movies" episode and Silvio basically experiences it when Gerry Torciano is executed right beside him while they're at dinner. Silvio says to Tony that he "didn't even hear the shot as it was happening." The last scene is very clearly a callback to this concept for anyone who has actually been paying attention. I don't think there is a way to dispute it. What is up to opinion though is who shot Tony in the final scene, another thing Chase very clearly shows is Tony's paranoia in the final scene. He looks to a couple different people in the restaurant, unsure if they may be here to kill him. The shifty looking Italian man in the Members Only jacket and the 2 black men that Tony may worry are another one of the mobs "unidentified black males". Personally I think personally the correct answer is that The man in the Members Only Jacket is there to kill Tony, him walking into the bathroom before Tony dies is a reference to The Godfather when Micheal Corleone goes to the bathroom to retrieve the gun before committing a double murder. The Members Only jacket is a reference back to Eugene from the first episode of season 6 titled "Members Only" in that episode Vito points out Eugene's jacket, no reason to do that unless it's foreshadowing, especially considering the jacket brand is literally the name of the episode. I believe the man wearing the jacket in the finale is wearing the exact one that Eugene wore, probably a family member of Eugene who discovered the reason behind his suicide through Eugene's wife and decided to take revenge for his relatives needless death. That answer may not be 100% confirmed but what is confirmed is that Chase didn't on a whim decide to chicken out of giving the show an ending, it ended exactly how he wanted it to. Chase had to fight with HBO executives who didn't want the show to end this way. Anyone who believes that Chase was" too lazy" to give the show a "proper ending" (whatever that means) are the truly lazy ones. People being spoonfed the best series of television ever made and not bothering to put any actual thought into what you are watching. And then when the show actually forces you to put any thought into it, all of a sudden the creators are lazy? Unbelievable. 😂

In the final scene here, you see the same thing happen with the guy in the members only jacket leave the table and walk into the bathroom,suggesting that he'll come out with a gun and take care of Tony. Thats just one of 100 different thoughts about the ending. Almost a choose your own adventure ending. Great way to end one of the best shows ever to be made.

There are a bunch of hints throughout the season that imply Tony died. My favorite is that the guy comes out of the bathroom to the right of Tony, or "3 o'clock" as they say in the military. 3 o'clock is the message Christopher gives to Tony and Paulie from hell, once Chrissy gets out of his coma. And there's lots of talk about the military in this episode. The fact that the 3 o'clock message was for Tony AND Paulie, implies Paulie is one who set Tony up, probably with New York. This episode also has odd moments where it lingers on Paulie as he looks regretful after talking to Tony, like at 17:02

Popular theories: 1. The girl with AJ was a NY plant. 2. Patsy and Pauly switches sides (Patsy was still pissed about his twin getting killed by the sopranos crew in season 1 and Pauly is just an opportunist). 3. Tony gets shot by the guy at the counter coming back out of the bathroom from his 3 o’clock position (remember Chris’ near death experience). 4. If meadow would have managed to park on the first try, she would have been sitting there, blocking the gunman. She was Tony’s guardian angel throughout the show, but fell short this time.
@tilmanreiss7 ай бұрын
As another thought (and I like this a lot): patsy and Paulie did conspire with NY to take out Tony, but they never got to execute, because some civilian relative of Eugene got his revenge first. That would explain the hit in front of the family, which patsy and paulie would probably have avoided. The members only guy also does not come across like a pro.

So a few things regarding the ending of the series. David Chase actually had wanted to end the show after season 4 feeling he’d lost creativity but writers Terry Winter & Matthew Weiner convinced him he needed to still finish a lot of the character arcs. They’ve said Chase decided on the black screen ending around that time, so it was planned far in advance but he never told anyone. It wasn’t in the script for the final episode and was done in editing afterwards so even the actors didn’t know. The final scene of the show was filmed at Holsten’s in Bloomfield, New Jersey and the booth they sat at with the jukebox is still there with a sign that reads “reserved for the Soprano family”, yet fans can come and sit and dine. Chase had eluded to many different scenarios since the shows ending as to Tony’s fate but never settled on anything. He truly wanted to leave it up to the viewer to decide how they think it goes. There was quite a bit of foreshadowing and make of it what you will moments throughout the show and in the final season including; In Season 6 Bobby and Tony are sitting in the boat at the cottage and Bobby tells Tony regarding getting shot “you probably never hear it when it happens”. Also not much later when Jerry Torciano gets murdered at dinner with Silvio, the gun shot is heard after blood splatters on Silvio, and he tells the guys later he didn’t hear it until after he realized it happened. Also after Tony and Bobby’s fist fight when Tony is sitting alone on the dock there’s a bell on the boat that keeps ringing as it hits the dock and Tony keeps looking over at it after it rings. It’s almost identical to the doorbell that rings in the diner in the final scene every time someone new opens the door and Tony looks up, which happens to be the final sequence of the scene. Most tellingly I think (and least well known) when the camera zooms in on the jukebox as Tony is looking for songs to play take a look at the song by Journey that would have played right after “Don’t Stop Believing”……… Any way you want it ;)
@DBat-sp1tp4 ай бұрын
Another foreshadowing you may recall is when AJ is arrested for trying to whack JR. Tony slams AJ up against the car and starts yelling at him. AJ got the idea from when Tony would watch GF1 and say that his favorite scene was when Michael went to the bathroom in the diner to grab the gun hidden behind the stall.

But why Chase ended it like that wasn’t more so for Tony’s death but more for the death of the viewer. Tony’s story was over no matter what. If he didn’t die at the end then he was going to jail for the rest of his life. The story began and ends with Tony and in that world things continue to move forward but now the story would continue through another

It’s just who did it? Little Carmine? Butch? Did Paulie flip? There are also some great videos explaining how Little Carmine may have been playing both sides to try and sabotage both Tony and Phil’s crew so he can be boss. Although he says he didn’t want it, he screwed up that meeting with Tony and Phil by bringing up his dead brother. I think little Carmine played dumb and was being a snake the whole time.

The entire series is from Tony’s perspective, for the most part. Every other episode ends with music playing over the credits. Remember back to when Bobbi said that “When it happens you probably don’t even hear it”. Tony also said “There’s only two ways out of this life, in the can or dead.” The sudden cut to black was Tony getting shot in the head by the guy who went into the bathroom. He was wearing a “Members Only” jacket, which is a notorious clothing choice for mobsters. He also looked over at Tony 3 times. Notice Paulie’s facial expressions after his last meetings with Tony. It’s mine and others theory that Paulie sold him out to save his skin. Might not be true, that much is ambiguous. Originally, David Chase left it open and refused to tell anyone if it really meant Tony was killed. Finally, in 2021, he confirmed that Tony did in fact get killed, right in front of his entire family, as the bell that rung was likely Meadow coming through the front door. This is also the only episode that cuts to black and is silent. When this originally aired, a ton of people thought their cable went out right at the worst time lol Tony got whacked, there’s no more ambiguity to the ending.

Notice the guy wearing the members only jacket? My theory is he was Eugenes brother and he shot Tony, just like in the godfather coming out from the bathroom.

DING! Ding! Ding! That’s a bingo! Hahaha. Nailed it. It’s not a coincidence that Chase directed that episode and the final episode. He made sure to connect the two. He said after the series aired, “Everything is right there on the screen if you look at it. It’s all there.”

"You probably don't even hear it; everything just fades to black" ... It has been suggested that the fella in the Members Only jacket is (a "zip") coming out of the restroom, Tony looks up to see Meadow, and everything fades to black for Tony. Personally, I'd like to think Tony survived, as an FBI team swarmed in before he could get off the fatal shot, however the TV commercial with Meadow doing the drive from NY, in the electric Chevy, (produced by David Chase) suggests her family was murdered, by her jewelry the camera comes up close on, and the hurst behind A.J, when they hug, I think he maybe in black clothing. Also notice the Cat on the wall in the restaurant is similar to the one staring at Christopher' picture on the wall... How cool, Waldon aka Wild Bill Guarnere from Band of Brothers, took out Phil. You both are fantastic! thank you for keeping the entertainment rolling our way.

The beauty of this show is David Chase’s writing and how much you actually have to think with this show. All the signs were there to let you know…”I bet you don’t even hear when it happens right” so ya….Tony’s brains were blown out in front of his family right as meadow walked in. We saw that whole last scene from Tony’s POV and fading to black means that’s what he saw as he got shot. As for Meadow and her struggle to park….this was significant because Meadow was always Tony’s guardian angel. When he was in his coma…it was Meadows voice that brought him back to life. Her taking forever to park also left Tony’s “3 o clock” wide open. If you remember When Christopher went to hell in his coma he had a message for Tony and it was “3 o clock” She would have been in the shooters way had she been able to just park right the first time. Also what was Tony’s favorite scene in Godfather? When he hides a gun in a bathroom of a restaurant then takes everyone out. As for The Guy at the bar, he was wearing a Members only jacket and if you remember there is an episode called Members only. Gene wore a members only jacket when he put a hit on some guy that owed $$ inside of a restaurant. So he was obviously the hitman. This is why this finale is amazing because even all the years later people are still coming up with their own version of what happened and who did it. This ride has been so fun with y’all. Please go watch Many saints of Newark. There’s a lot of foreshadowing in that movie as well into Tony’s life in this game.

Pauli definitely betrayed Tony to NY. Paulie always felt underappreciated by Tony so when in this episode Tony offers him the promotion and he looks pained when he leaves the bing, that's because he's already talking to NY. He's thinking why did you finally appreciate me when it's too late. We know Paulie was untrustworthy, he previously gave Johnny sack info because he thought that would allow him to join NY. Tony nearly whacked him on the boat because he didn't fully trust him and Paulie sensed it. Paulie would have been the most likely to take over the family too with Silvio and Bobby out, so he had a big reason to sell Tony out. Also Tony was probably going to prison if he didn't get killed, Carlo had turned informant and he had so much on him. He was screwed either way.

Maybe life just went on. But remember Bobby said when you die you probably don't even know it and everything turns to black. That hitman probably got him. And maybe even AJ and Carmella (the 3 of them took the onion rings like communion wafers). And maybe Meadow saw her whole family die. Or maybe not

@mymusic84148 ай бұрын
I disagree, I think it was extremely well done. When Tony is sitting at the booth and looking at whose coming thru the door the audience sees it thru his eyes. Thru Tony's eyes we see meadow , then we see darkness. He got smoked and never saw it coming.

Remember that Christopher, when he came out of his coma, told Tony "3:00." The guy who went to the bathroom would have been at Tony's 3:00 when he shot him. Tony didn't hear it, just like Bobby wondered, and Meadow was the last thing he ever saw.

Tony dies! It's a dance. Every time it shows Tony's face, it's him looking up at whoever is coming into the restaurant. Then it switches to his point of view. Finally when this happens, there is blackness and nothing. The guy went to the bathroom and then came out and shot Tony in the back of the head and that was his POV perfectly. It was his punishment for killing a NYC boss. It happened right in front of AJ and Meadow would have been walking into the restaurant when it happened.

The guy with the members only jacket at the end, I think was the one that got Tony. Apparently, he's the brother of the capo that hung himself earlier in the series so he probably held a grudge against Tony for his brother.

I remember freaking out when the screen went black. We thought maybe too many people were watching and it glitched…and MANY HOURS LATER, we had to accept it. I kinda felt like they whacked the viewers. I think it called back to the conversation Tony had with Bobby. Bobby said something like “I wonder if you see it coming or if everything goes black.” Or something. It was the scene in Bobby’s boat when Tony & Carm went to Bobby & Janice’s for T’s birthday.

I like to think David Scatino's son Eric and Sal Vitro's son Paul, met up while taking some classes at Montclair State, went out, got drunk a few times, and learned from each other that Tony Soprano had had a negative impact on their families and plotted to contract with someone else to take Tony out. Maybe with some help from Eugene Pontecorvo's wife and perhaps his son also?

We all had the same reaction when the screen went to black. People thought there was something wrong with the cable lol. "Don't stop....." BANG, Tony is dead. Also....it has been recently confirmed that the Russian from the Pine Barrens episode survived. He climbed a tree and waited until it was safe to get away. He stumbled upon some boy scouts who were camping in the area and they helped him. In the final season they did shoot a scene where Paulie and Chris spot him at a bar. Then they shot him in the alley. David Chase didn't like the scene so he cut it from production.

This has to be the boldest ending to a tv show I’ve seen because Chase leaves it up to the audience to piece together what happened. Alot of people were initially disappointed when this episode first aired and people were saying it was the worst ending ever. However, most of the fanbase appreciates the ending now because its more effective than anything that they could’ve shown to us on the screen

The guy in the members only jacket comes back out of the bathroom to kill Tony. From that direction he’d be at Tony’s 3 o’clock. Fulfilling the prophecy from Chris’ coma dream.
@mdc13427 ай бұрын
Here’s the correct interpretation of the ending: Tony Soprano was shot. The blackness is Tony’s POV; the entire last scene is shot from Tony face, the diner door bell rings, Tony looks up > we see his POV. David Chase said “its all there,” and it literally is (rewatch it after reading this, its obvious) here’s the explanation: - Christopher’s 3 oclock meaning - 3 onion rings at table - 3 people at table - Meadow 3 attempts of parallel parking - Junior’s “All things come in 3’s” - This would be the THIRD attempt on Tony’s life - “You probably don’t hear it when it happens” - Tribute to Tony’s favourite Godfather scene - Member’s Only Jacket goes to washroom to get gun (like Al Pacino did) - Carmela is the third person to walk through the door at Holsten’s - Tony is shot at his 3 oclock - 3rd “Don’t Stop” verse is where it goes black - “Third strike and im out right?” - Tony Ending of Many Saints - Tony waiting for Dickie at Holsten’s who died.. Holsten’s the start and end for Tony. Constantly looking at the door for dickie
