The scene with Carmela and the psychiatrist is a linchpin of the Sopranos series. He gives her a stark portrait of her reality. He isn't recommending that she leave Tony because he is unfaithful, he's telling her that she is complicit in the crimes Tony is doing all the while she is telling herself that her life is normal and that she is apart from the criminality. She has blood on her hands and has to decide if she wants to stay, knowing she is an enabler taking advantage of the money and power that comes with it, or redeem herself by running and becoming a moral person. In the end she has decided to stay and, in recognition of that, insists on getting the $50,000 from Tony - she has accepted her guilt by getting the money. It is not lost on the creators of the show that we, the viewers, are a little like Carmela. The conceit of the show is that even though all of the characters are awful people, thieves, misogynists, extortionists, murderers, in the end we still root for them. We are complicit by enjoying the foibles and personal struggles of the characters as well as their hideous actions of violence and irredeemable immorality. The scene is a reminder that all the characters are awful, and that we are enjoying watching them.

Solid take, but for a minute there I thought you were referencing politicians until I realized nobody enjoys watching politicians, as they are FAR more unscrupulous and irredeemable than any character in this series.

No psychiatrists aren’t necessarily supposed to say this is what I think you should do. They’re supposed to help you figure it out yourself, but in the same breath, this was an old-school man who seen a woman going through hell and everyone around her sugarcoating her situation. So he decided to tell her flat out, one human being to another, what the pretty obvious truth was.

Tony was pulling a power move. He's full of them as a natural alpha male. He's portaying to Ralphie that Im in control and nothing you can do will disrupt me. Now apologize and go on and be a good boy. Without even saying it. Even after talking to NY was a dead end. No basic level made guy is worth more than a boss, especially someone like Tony. Ralphie had to come to terms with his anger at this point and his survival. Truly compelling storytelling. Having said that, I love that ya'll put out content on the regular. Truly your grind and I'm here for it.

Carmella’s visit to the male therapist was one of the realest moments of the entire show. Dude didn’t let Carmella off the hook for nothing. “Take the children, what’s left of them”. Hard as shit. Another reminder to the audience that these guys aren’t just some funny douchebags who commit crimes every now and then but that they are monsters who leave nothing but destruction in their wake.

Great reaction guys. But it was Silvio that recommended bumping Ralph up to Captain. Paulie actually wants Ralph dead. I love that Asia picked up on Johnny Sack playing both sides with Tony and Ralphie. Back in season 1, Livia called him "that sneak from Manhattan". A pretty apt description, actually.

Johnny Sac is the Underboss of the New York family so he is like Sil's position even though Sill is Tony's Consigliere which is his advisor. Tom was that in the Godfather. Sometimes they use a go between to settle disputes in other families because he is neutral. Johnny becomes Boss when his boss dies and he is suppose to be a John Gotti like character with his expensive suits. Keep enjoying the show. It gets so much better.
