The film was directed by Newt Arnold and written by Sheldon Lettich, Christopher Cosby and Mel Friedman. Bloodsport stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as Frank, Donald Gibb as Jackson, Leah Ayres as Janice, Norman Burton as Helmer, Forest Whitaker as Rawlins, Roy Chiao as Tanaka, Bolo Yeung as Chong Li and Shun-Yin Leung as Mrs. Tanaka.
Check out this first time watching this throwback classic 80's movie reaction video for Bloodsport, and see if I can make it through this action movie. Horror is a genre I've barely explored, mostly because I'm a huge wuss. Typically my Halloween movie viewings consist of Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. This year I decided to expand my horror movie knowledge and try and watch these horror movie fan favourites.

This movie was essentially remade in 1996. It was called "The Quest" and starred Van Damme and Roger Moore, set in 1925. The plot was almost identical, where you had Van Damme facing a variety of fighters from around the world in a big secret martial arts tournament.

It was made in 1973 also and it was called Enter the Dragon, starring Bruce Lee of course.

Fun Fact: The character of Ray Jackson is played by Donald Gibb, who is most well known for the Revenge of the Nerds movies. He also had a small part in Conan the Barbarian as one of King Osric's guards. He had briefly played professional football for the San Diego Chargers until an injury sustained in a car accident ended his football career and he turned to acting.

A really great movie. Fyi "The Brick not hit back" is a Bruce Lee Pharse. Also this movie and Big Trouble in Litle Chine were the inspiration for Mortal Kombat game. Mortal Kombat was suppose to be a Van Damme game after the success of this movie. Van Damme inspired the Johnny Cage character (You see the split punch to the balls scene just like Johnny Cage). You should see other martial arts by Van Dame and others. Van Damme movies like Kickboxer , Double Impact ,Cyborg, Lion Heart, Universal Solider, TimeCop. Especially I highly recommand you see "No Retrat No Surrender" (Van Damm is the bad guy in it) which is a kind of Karate Kid movie with much better fights. The actor who plays Chung Lee played with Bruce Lee in Enter The Dragon among other things

The movie contains many top martial artists and Hong Kong stuntmen (some of the greatest artists of all time) from all over the world. Jean Claude was a European champion himself. Bolo Young became famous staring opposite Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon (you should watch that, you'll see this movie's inspiration and one of the greatest legends in movie history) most of Bolo's lines in this movie are cribbed right out of Enter the Dragon in homage to Bruce.

Bolo Yeung, who plays Chong Li, actually got his name from the character he plays in Enter the Dragon. There's a great scene in JCVD's (embarrassing) reality show in which the pair are reunited, and JC gets incredibly frustrated trying to teach Bolo how to play "Rock, Paper, Scissors". I wish I were making this up.

Yes, this is in fact Hong Kong. Specifically Kwonloon city. Was one of the most secretive cities in the world, as in no one goes in or out, talks about what it was like inside and somehow Bloodsport is one of the only things of any kind that was ever filmed inside of it.

it really wasn't "secretive" it was just a horrible example of capitalism gone wrong, gigantic apartment complexes put together, huge amount of tiny apartments it was basically its own city on its own and the british who mandated over hong kong at the time didn't go in. it was demolished shortly after and the residents relocated, nothing secretive just that people didn't wanna go in there lol

This movie is a work of fiction and is the stuff of martial arts legends. Frank Dux was a bullshit artist not a martial artist from all reports but this is still a super fun movie when I was a kid. (Still has a warm place in my heart)

Location Location Fact: This is one of the few films featuring scenes filmed inside Kowloon Walled City before its destruction. MK Connection Fact: Midway's hit videogame, Mortal Kombat (1992), took huge inspiration from the film and even used a parody of Jean-Claude Van Damme for the character Johnny Cage, who has a similar costume, back story and a familiar split punch. According to game creator John Tobias, they wanted to make a "gritty" game based on the film. Historical Fact: The movie was touted as a true story, but over the years, doubts have arisen about its veracity. Most martial-arts enthusiasts view Frank Dux's accounts of competing in secret tournaments as complete fiction, along with his claims he was an undercover CIA operative. Some have pointed out that nobody else has come forward to confirm his story about competing in secret tournaments, or told their own version. It is now generally accepted that Dux lied his way into Hollywood, and that he has likely never won or even competed in a single martial arts tournament. Records obtained through the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) show he was only in the US Marine Corps Reserve, and was never posted overseas, let alone to Southeast Asia as he has claimed. The CIA has no record of his ever working with them. His personal brand of martial arts, Dux Ryu Ninjitsu, is also a complete fabrication. Frank Dux never has and does not hold any of the world records listed at the end of the film. Like his own back story and claims of kumite success, these are all pure fiction.

The movie was filmed inside Kowloon CIty . I saw the place once but have never been inside it . The place was a maze and it's easy to get lost inside . It's worse if you can't speak the language . Kowloon City has a few documentaries here on KZbin , check it out if you get a chance .

There's actually a great game called "spot the point in the Jean-Claude Van Damme movie where they try to justify his accent". In this one, it's basically just the kid. Other films have lines, whole mono/dialogues and even whole scenes or subplots. The main exception is Street Fighter, where Capcom, the Japanese makers of the game, insisted to director Steven de Souza (writer of Die Hard and Commando, and another name whose name I'll just pick up off the ground) that the film had to star JCVD as the "all-American hero". It transpired soon enough that the Capcom guys had only ever seen JCVD dubbed into Japanese and knew nothing about the accent.

Jen, you might like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). It stars females kicking ass: Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh (Everything, Everywhere All at Once). I love Ziyi....she's so beautiful and her martial arts skills in the film are phenomenal. Its a tragic love story with traditional kung fu, made in Hong Kong but it was released in over 3,000 theatres in America back in 2000. I saw it like 5 times in the theatres here in Chicago and every time the theater was packed. A very nice film you might like.

With any fight scene there is a risk of injury, you can use some perspective tricks with the camera to hide the fact that you didn't kick or punch anywhere near the other stuntman, but mistakes can happen. In fact JCVD did actually knock out his opponent in the first fight his character had. When the guy got up and tried to attack JCVD from behind, JCVD threw a back elbow, legit hit the other guy and knocked him cold.

I always loved action movies as a kid. And I loved the Arnold movies, the Stallone movies, but Vann Damme movies were my favorite. The other two were brute strength, Van Damme, was pure athleticicm and karate. You'll never see Arnold or Stallone do a flying spin kick.

Thanks for another great reaction video, Jen! 😁Bloodsport is the movie that launched Jean Claude Van Damme's career in Hollywood. It's "supposedly" based on the real life of Frank Dux, but over the years it's been revealed that everything in the movie was fabricated and never actually happened, and Dux himself is considered a fraud. But the film was a huge hit for Cannon Films and Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, who were the kings of the B-movies of the 1980s.

Dux still contests it lol he is legit as a martial artist but he hyped up his military experience and cia ties. He has helped train law enforcement in defense a few times from what i hear

@@deannamarie3746 He's legitimate in the sense that he's a martial artist and a black belt, but there are a lot of martial artists with black belts. Dux's mythical claims about his prowess, the Kumite, and his ninjutsu training are all garbage. The only legitimate Japanese bujutsu school that still teaches the Shinobi techniques is the Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu in Japan, and Dux was never there. Steven Seagal is Dux's only equal in BS.

@@44excalibur well thats what I mean, not disputing him as an actual martial artists, and has done some decent demonstrations but his background was definitely exaggerated, nobody has been in over 300 fights thats for sure lol. Seagal the same thing as far whatever cia experience he supposedly had, but gained more respect for him over the years as far as being a legit martial artist at least, and he did actually live and study in Japan and didnt like Dux much himself

The real-life Frank Dux is full of shit, a complete liar of the highest order, but this is a fantastic movie! "KUMITE KUMITE KUMITE" Now you have to watch the other Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, Kickboxer. In the early days of the UFC there weren't any weight classes by the way.

I'll join the list to give the thing more credibility: Frank Dux is a humongous liar. None of that is true, but the movie is a cheesy classic. And yeah, there are 3 sequels. Jackson is in Part 2, and that's about it. As for remakes... pretty much JCVD's entire career (Kickboxer, The Quest and, in my opinion, the best of the bunch, Lionheart). Great reaction!
