"Get your ass to Mars!" I like to think that the events of this movie happened. The whole "It Was A Dream" plot rarely ever works out in movies unless we see what really happened. Fun Fact: Arnold Schwarzenegger was so impressed by how much dedication Sharon Stone had in training for her character role that he even help get her inducted into the Stunt Woman Association as an honorary member. Sharon Stone posed nude for 'Playboy' magazine, showing off the buff body she developed in preparation for the movie. Sharon pumped iron and learned Tae Kwon Do. Bonus Fact: Arnold Schwarzenegger noticed that Michael Ironside was constantly on the phone between takes. When he broached the subject with Ironside, he was told that he was phoning his sister and that she was currently suffering from cancer. Arnold immediately brought Michael to his trailer and they had an hour-long, three-way conversation with Ironside's sister about what exercises she should do and what kinds of foods she should be eating. Ironside has never forgotten Schwarzenegger's kindness and neither has his sister.

I think this is my favourite reaction you've done so far Jen. There's so many twists and turns in the movie and you were getting wrapped up in every one. Arnie said in an interview that the line "Consider that a divorce" was his favourite one liner in any of his films. Yeah it was all done on sets and with miniatures, no CG, which is great as the effects in this still look so good and any use of the CG they had back then would have aged really badly. If you haven't watched it yet then the next Arnie film to watch would be The Running Man which is also full of great action and awesome, cheesy one liners.
@sabalos
@sabalos 2 жыл бұрын
The bit you specifically asked about whether it was CGI etc, when Arnie's on the train - he's standing in a train set, then when the camera pulls back out of the window you can see that the train is a little model, so he's being superimposed in the model train window. It's a pretty great match and camera move, especially for 1990. (This movie was a big driver of special effects though - the X-ray scanner skeleton stuff was a huge leap forward for CGI, not just in the end result but the whole process of deciding to do it and actually putting it together. There's a featurette about it on the recent 30th anniversary bluray.)

You might want to check out the sad story of how Philip K Dick slowly lost his mind. Hallucinations, paranoia, loss of sense of reality. Science fiction did not pay well, so he fought poverty all his life. He was married five times. I am sure the California scene (i.e. drugs) did not help very much. He left behind 44 novels (another source says 33) and 121 short stories. His life reads like a Thomas Pynchon book. At any rate - another wonderful reaction -- can't wait for you to see 'True Lies'.

It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Partrick Swayze, Richard Dreyfuss Michael Douglas, Dennis Quaid, James Caan and Christopher Reeve were considered for the lead till Schwarzenegger was cast There was a sequel to the movie that became a standalone movie called Minority Report by Steven Spielberg starring Tom Cruise as a cop accused of a crime he hasn't committed yet in this epic Sci Fi Action Adventure film.

One of my favorite Arnold movies! Arnold at his action movie peak, Michael Ironside at maximum Michael Ironside, Paul Verhoeven in peak form, and the film that convinced me that Philip K Dick adaptations can do no wrong. Like almost all PKD film adaptations, my understanding is that it takes a lot of ideas from the story but little of the plot. Blade Runner and Minority Report are also PKD adaptations worth watching if you haven't already. Like many Verhoeven films, it married action, over the top gore, tongue in cheek satire, and surprisingly strong plot and dialogue writing. RoboCop and Starship Troopers are both worth checking out. This is one of those Arnie films that really highlights the fact that Schwarzenegger is actually quite the connoisseur of good scripts (and a sci-fi fan). True Lies is *excellent* and features Arnold co-starring with Jamie Lee Curtis. Must watch.

Total Recall isn't true to the short story plot-wise, but it is the adaptation that's closest in spirit to Philip K. Dick's work in general, featuring numerous tropes his works generally had like the reality-bending, numerous plot-twists and fake-outs, proto-cyberpunk elements, and most importantly the satire that most other adaptations miss. While the philosophical ideas in his works are indeed interesting and worth discussing, people adapting his work tend to adopt a darker more serious tone, taking what's supposed to be satirical and outrageous WAY too seriously.

I really enjoyed Severance. I hope to see more reators watching it on youtube as there aren't many at the moment and it's good for reactions. A lot of Philip K Dick stories involve being unsure of reality or distrusting your own mind. Dick took a LOT of drugs throughout his life and struggled with his own sanity at times. I feel sad for him as a person dealing with that but some amazing ideas came from it into his work. Many movies and tv episodes/series have been made based on his writing, which is a testament to his interesting thought processes.

11:50 - Using someone as a human shield is strictly movie fiction. In real life, bullets will easily go completely through a human body. Most handgun bullets will also easily go through wooden tables, walls and car bodies. 18:08 - Uncensored nipple! I'm scarred for life! ;) 20:30 - If Doug's mind is creating its own reality, wouldn't it also create the sweat on the Rekall executive to further the delusion? BTW, speaking of Robocop, did you recognize the actor playing Cohagen, as Dick Jones, OCP executive? Also, same director...

What's great about this movie is that it could be either way, depending on your interpretation. I'm sure you've realized by now, but everything that happens in the movie after he wakes up in the chair completely fit the specifications of what he requested. Also, don't know if you caught it but as he's drifting off, one of the technicians says "Blue skies on Mars. That's a new one." On the other hand, it seems as though Melina actually existed, as he dreamt of her exact face before anything even happened. For a movie that's not about time travel, you could dive pretty deep into this. I recommend BRAZIL in this spirit. Another proper mind-f*ck.

I never caught the references from Total Recall in other movies before, if it was the intent. The red pill taking you out of a simulation (Matrix), was Total Recall what inspired them? "Clever girl", because she was distracting him while the others snuck up on him (Jurassic Park).

This movie is packed full of one liners and for good reason! When audiences saw the teaser trailer, which was attached to Tango and Cash, they were confused, until they saw the theatrical trailer and wanted to see this movie. It received an X rating due to the strong graphic violence that had to be trimmed for a minute or two. Schwarzenegger said in an interview that this move is "Indiana Jones Meets Metropolis meets Star Wars, meets Die Hard or Die Hard on Mars." He even said that the architecture is based on BATMAN 89. Arnold did most of his on stunts in this movie. The movie had a combination of Miniatures, CGI, Prosthetic makeup effects, blue screen, front screen projection, and matte paintings, which is why it won Best Visual Effects.

Philip K. Dick is probably the most significant writer of SF to emerge from the US, and definitely the most filmed. I’ve mainly read his novels, and somehow have never grabbed up one of his short story collections, but have bumped into several of the short stories when reading collections of short tales featuring many different authors. Interestingly, the short stories I discover in this manner never seem to be the ones that have been filmed! So I have not read ‘We Can Remember It For You Wholesale”…but my understanding is that the 1990 Total Recall film does expand the basic idea of the story, whereas I heard that Minority Report is very unlike the PKD short story that inspired it. Jen, I know you read SF; my Top 5 Philip K. Dick novels are: Dr. Bloodmoney (this book also makes my Top 10 list of SF by ANY author) Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (filmed as Blade Runner; book and film both excellent) Time Out Of Joint (pretty much accepted as a major influence on the movie The Truman Show) The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch Eye In The Sky If you enjoyed Total Recall, you should enjoy checking out PKD’s novels and short stories. Paranoia, Reality turned on its head, Conspiracies real and imagined, Unreliable identities, and Mars! I just read a PKD short story called ‘Survey Team’ in a collection called Nature’s Warnings (eco-minded SF), so it’s funny to see you post this the next day - everything is reminding me how crazy brilliant the author was.

Loved this movie Jen. Glad you think it's worth a rewatch. I was not happy with his "see you at the party," line. We all knew he wasn't going to the party. I wanted "Hey Richter, let me give you a hand" or "Could you use a hand, Richter?" or something like that. Dream or real this time he got the girl. Until he wakes up and his wife beats the crap out of him again. After this I remembered that Blade Runner was based on Phil Dick story. He had several stories turned into watchable movies. I didn't want to watch the Colin Farrell reimagining of this title. Surprise! Good stuff. Not the same story. Well worth the watch. Arnold Sci-fi? Running Man and Sixth Day. Both watchable. Arnold as a fireman fights terrorists in Collateral Damage. As always good job Jen.

The scene with the guy claiming to be from recall is the best evidence that it's all a dream. The bad guys plan depends on Quaid and quato meeting. If Quaid gets captured at that point in the movie the plan is ruined. There's no reason to send in the guy from the recall commercials to convince Quaid that none of this is real that doesn't help at all.

i have a lot more to suggest , try Midnight Madness (1980) i think George Lucas secretly made it after the success of Star Wars, Hollywood game him a golden ticket and said he could make any movie he wanted, so i think he made that and then Howard the Duck (1986) because i bet he thought no one would ever make a movie about him , they would only concentrate on the popular marvel characters like the Hulk and Spiderman

Did not read the short story? but I think the biggest difference is that Quaid should be ordinary desk job dude not beast like Arnold. Its opened to interpretation but directors take is that it was all in his head, he got lobotomized at Recall at the end, that's why white light and menacing music just before credits.
