Chris Sharma and Adam Ondra spent two years working together to climb La Dura Dura (5.15c / 9b+), the world's hardest climb at the time. This film tells the story of their unique collaboration and shows Adam's historic first ascent and Chris' second ascent.

This is one of the most significant projects in the history of sport climbing. And we're lucky enough to have it documented. Chris Sharma, the strongest climber of his generation, passing the torch to Adam Ondra, the strongest of his, by completing what was at the time THE hardest route on earth. That's pretty damn special.

@@euphoricpoison2095 Hahahahahaha yes. I have heard of this man named Alex. That is a very different kind of climbing: long form endurance, big wall climbing that normally takes days, and Alex's feat is monumental, one of the most incredible athletic performances in history. This video with Chris and Adam, however, is a different feat entirely, and what is truly amazing about it is, again, the fact that Chris is essentially passing the torch to Adam. Alex is an incredible athlete and badass, and Chris and Adam would never dream of soloing like he does, but when it comes to sheer strength and climbing ability, these guys are miles ahead of him.

As I got better I rewatched it, probably a year or two later, again, it helped to burn the fire inside of me brighter. I just rewatched again, after climbing for 4 years and it is just as amazing and just as inspiring as it was 4 years ago. This video has been an instrumental part in my climbing journey, and truly, in my opinion, the best video on KZbin.

I really love how Ondra and Sharma are with each other. In a sense they are rivals - Sharma was the best extreme-difficulty climber in the world until a little while back, now that title has probably passed to Ondra. But each of them is so genuinely helpful and supportive to to the other - what a great example not only of sportsmanship, but also of well-lived lives.

For the "why they scream" question, researchers at Drexel University found that when subjects were asked to use a handgrip that they exerted 10 percent more energy than simply exhaling. They're not sure on the exact mechanics, but they postulated it creates a fight or flight response that gets the adrenaline going. Not definitive but there could be a physiological reason why they grunt. Until I see a silent guy beat a 9b+ climb, can't say whether it's just pointless noise.

The grade you see here 9b+ has only been climbed by 4 people in the world at the time of this comment. Meanwhile Adam Ondra has gone another step further and climbed 9c, which has thusfar not been repeated, by anyone.

God I’m so bummed that I haven’t been following this sport longer. I knew nothing about climbing until Free Solo came out, and I guess that’s kind of like if you were to watch the Super Bowl your first time watching football. So then I watched the Dawn Wall and Silence and a lot of the well know pieces on rock climbing. I personally have no interest in climbing, I be been boxing for about 12 years, but idk what it is but specifically, but as a spectator, climbing might be my favorite sport to just observe. I’m totally hooked. Now I spend so much time watching anything climbing related and all the awesome documentaries and it’s like a new hobby for me. There is something about not knowing what the human limitations are that leaves a lot of room for these monumental leaps in skill and ability that people achieve in climbing that blows me away. I think Tommy Caldwell said it in Free Solo that “ people who know a little about climbing are like ah he says he’s got it, he can do it, and people that REALLY know climbing are freaked out”. I’ve never been to Yosemite so I didn’t really understand that gravity...no pun intended...of what he was doing and I finally made it to Yosemite this summer, somewhat because of free solo, and dude....the idea of someone up on El Capitan without a rope seriously makes my balls hurt. I still don’t think a lot of people understand how crazy that was. Anyway, for any climbers out there, you guys deserve more credit and as many fans as the best athletes in the world get and keep pushing the boundaries.

Yup. Silence almost feels surreal when this was the hardest route in the world. Im thinking about no one actually is projecting silence at the moment, and why that is? Stefano ghisolfi, alex megos, idk but there are some more names should be projecting to either confirm 9c or call out second 9b+ or admit they just cant friggin do it but something has to happen up there in norway you cant just forget that sh** exists but it feels like people are just ignoring it???

Literal half-toe lengths as well. And then they have to concentrate all their body weight onto these tiny tiny spaces. And they do this over and over and over again. I don't think it's exaggeration to say that 99.9% of ppl wouldn't be able to do the hardest part even once.
