What I think a lot of people miss in the end sequence is that it is not a depiction of “what could have been”. We can see the discrepancies from the reality, the nice manager and there being tons of people watching Mia’s performance to name a few. It is a dream sequence, something that could only happen in a movie, but not in real life. And even there, Seb has to sacrifice his dream of owning a club for Mia’s dream. The movie’s name La-La-Land is not only a nickname for Los Angeles, but also (as defined my Merriam Webster) a “a euphoric, dreamlike mental state detached from the harsher realities of life”. It’s a beautiful play on words. The sequence is their La-La-Land, beautiful, but unobtainable.

@@GiveMeTheRice yes, the story is building up to the idea that they could've had been together but not accomplish their dreams, or sacrifice the relationship for their dream which they chose, the epilogue shows a reality where they didn't have to sacrifice anything, like in traditional (key word) movies, but here in this movie it's both more real and more dreamlike than the traditional movies that the creators of the movie take inspiration from.

The whole sequence plays in his mind while he performs "their" song after he saw her, or maybe it's intertwined images of what could've been from both of them while he plays the song. It's something many of us can relate to, we play an alternate outcome in our heads, knowing it won't make a difference. It's heartbreaking and poetic.

Nominated for 14 Oscars including Best Picture, but won for Best Director, Best Actress, Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Production Design. It almost won Best Picture, but there was mishap as Warren Beatty presented that Oscar for the wrong movie. MOONLIGHT won at the 2017 Academy Awards.

That was a weird night when the wrong movie was announced.... I almost think it was planned. A few years prior Steve Harvey read the wrong winner for Ms Universe and look how much PR that got.... That aside, I saw all best film nominees for 2017 except "Hell or High Water" (just never got around to it) and Moonlight just didn't come across as "Best Film" as well made it was.

@@valleya6114 Oscar winning actress Faye Dunaway(Network) who won over Sissy Spacek in Carrie insisted on reading the card while Oscar winner for Reds Warren Beatty(Sister is double Oscar winner Shirley Maclaine) did not. They both starred in Bonnie and Clyde together which is why they were presenting. Damien Chazelle who also did WHIPLASH another film about music(Jazz) won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar(JK Simmons) but sadly his film Babylon got little love at the Oscars. Although Emma Stone won the Oscar for LA LA LAND, one youtuber thought there was a stronger case for Viola Davis if she put herself in Best Actress for Fences but after years of going without the Oscar she went Supporting knowing it was a better chance for a win which she did. Much like if Michelle Williams had put herself in Supporting Actress for The Fabelmans she probably would have won after many nominations but she chose Best Actress category which she lost to Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis has her to thank for her statuette. I think this takes some inspiration with the colors from the French film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and the colors/joy of the French film Amelie which is HIGHLY recommended for its humor and philosophy.

The ending never struck me as what could have been, it was always “what we wish would’ve happened but know it never really would’ve went down that way” they both make eye contact and for that split second they both go through what scenario they wish had played out at the same time. one last reminiscing of their love with a touch of regret

There’s something beautiful in a film that teaches you that love isn’t always enough, that people come into your life and inspire but you have to let them go to achieve the life you want and be the person you want to be but can’t do it together. Great reaction! The director stated that the film is really dedicated to all of the creatives trying to make their dreams come true. He said everyone that makes it has that someone along the way who helped them in the beginning and inspired them along the way. They don't both always make it or end up together but you never forget the person who supported your dream. I think these characters will always love each other for what they were to each other in the beginning of their journey.

The last look they gave each other, so beautiful, what they had led them to their dreams coming true. They'll always share that memory while being at a good place in their lives, we all have people we love from a distance. Their story did have a happy ending but we still got the "La La Land" version of their story towards the end where they end up together. This is like a poem in 3 parts: to Cinema, to Los Angeles, and to Love, definitely Oscar material. Love this movie, a rare modern Hollywood classic.

The pink haze sunset is actually something that is very particular to LA because of the pollution, so it creates these spectacular sunsets. This movie is an homage to old Hollywood movies, struggling artists, as well as to LA itself. When they leave the movie theater, they drive up to the Griffith Observatory, one of the most iconic buildings in LA. We have a lot of art deco buildings all around LA. I cried like a baby when I watched this in theaters for the first time (in LA, might I add). I'm glad ya'll liked it. It was serendipitous how I watched this on the plane last night but I landed right as she got to Seb's, so glad I got to finish it with y'all.

I think another way to look at the ending (to you keep you from being just depressed by it) is that there is nothing to suggest that both of them aren’t happy overall. She has her baby and her husband and they seem happy together. He has his club. That means that there is not just one happy ending for people. Yes, we would have liked for them to end up together obviously, but just because it wasn’t that happy ending doesn’t mean they didn’t get a happy ending. There are a million different ways our lives can go, some of them happy and some of them sad. Luckily for them they get to have their happy endings and also have the happy/bittersweet memories of each other.
@MRDY4322
@MRDY4322 8 ай бұрын
It bugs me when people call this a sad ending. I don't see it as a sad ending at all. Bittersweet, sure, but you can tell Mia and Sebastian are both happy with where their lives are at, as well as happy to see the other achieve their dream. They do still love each other and I think the dream sequence shows both of them imagining how things could have been if they stayed together, but they're both content to let each other go

Mia's husband was played by the main character in the movie "That Thing You Do", written and directed by Tom Hanks about a fictitious one hit wonder band in the 60's. The really cool thing is that the character in the movie was a HUGE jazz fan and went into great detail about the history of jazz and how it inspired him to play the drums. I thought it was really cool that they used this actor , from a 20 year old Jazz inspired movie for this bit part.

@@IndieCindy3 I have to agree. The Greatest Showman is probably one of the weaker musicals in terms of actual plot and writing. It doesn't take away from how amazing the songs are though. What too many people don't know; or forget or over look, was the fact Ryan was one of group of children hired by Disney for the second version of The Mickey Mouse Club. Him; along with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and JC Chasez (N'Sync), all worked together on the show. A show where everyone sings and dances. You have to be a Triple Threat; to be a Disney Star. Most of Ryan's roles after didn't request him to sing; as he wanted to be an actor, where the other 3 wanted a singing career. But it doesn't mean he didn't have the talent to be a singer.

I’m also Team La La Land. I watched Moonlight and loved it; really superb film with poignant performances. But that’s just it: the performances are largely what make that film. Meanwhile, La La Land had two wonderful performances by Ryan and Emma, as well as stunning cinematography, an entirely original and fantastic soundtrack, a beautiful score, and more. And even though it didn’t win, I feel like it is the more loved and talked about film. It is so re-watchable, unlike Moonlight which is slow-paced and melancholy.

Pump the breaks. Go watch some of IMDB's Top 100 movies before you call this the most unique film ever made.

The first time I watched this movie, I was immediately hooked. My parents didn’t like it, they aren’t huge musical fans. But I rewatched it so many times, and listened to the playlist over and over. I absolutely love this movie! No matter how soul crushing the end is 😅 If you guys want to react to another musical, I suggest Tick, Tick… Boom! Or maybe even Hamilton 🤷🏻‍♀️

1. Vanity Fair's KZbin channel has a video where the choreographer of La La Land breaks down how they did the first dance sequence on the freeway [there's some hidden edits]. It's a great watch. 2. The actor who plays Emma Stone's love interest at the end of the film (Tom Everett Scott) is also in the comedy TV show "I'm Sorry" which is pretty hilarious and [though cancelled prematurely after only 2 seasons] is only 20 eps so easy to binge on streaming.

So random but this always reminded me of that episode in rick and morty when the parents watch alternative universes where they never got together and saw how successful they end up only for them to see their alternate versions find each other again and tell them they still love each other 😭

This movie is heavily influenced by one of the director’s favorite films, a French musical, “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” which is considered the happiest sad film or the saddest happy film. It’s very different (as all the dialogue is sung), but the movie stylistically has a lot of parallels with La La Land. Both are incredible.

I usually really enjoy Zuff's random comments throughout the videos but this was a bit too chaotic, even Rob and Bryce seemed annoyed at one point.

The sign doesn't say Chicken On a Stick in french (it would have been funny though), it's a real parisian jazz club called Le Caveau de la Huchette, a very famous jazz club since the 1940's where some of the greatest have played. Damien Chazelle is a french-american director and he obviously loves jazz so he definitely knows this club. (sorry for my english)
