Hated this movie, expected more. This movie feels the need to put men down in order to boost women. There’s a different between equality & supremacy. They tried to preach equality but just ended up doing the opposite because this movie thinks that the only way women can have power is if they take power from all the men.

I’ve got to give you guys a LOT of credit. A LOT. I can’t tell you how many Barbie reactions I’ve watched. EVERY reaction with any guys in the group (guys I’ve always liked and respected) there was this weird tense reaction to some of the feminist stuff. I was completely surprised. Like, every time the mom gives the “it’s hard to be a woman” speech, they’d react so…..uncomfortable. They keep responding with this commentary about how that speech applies to everyone, that men go through that too, etc etc. They just couldn’t leave it alone or be supportive without including themselves. I’m not kidding. Every reaction. Also It felt like they couldn’t laugh at all the jokes? That it’s IMPOSSIBLE to laugh at any joke at the expense of men or male stereotypes? I was so disappointed. I’m a woman. Do you know how many movies make jokes about female stereotypes? Small things, like legally blonde saying women get manicures for comfort. Or all the movies that declare women like shopping like it’s a religion. Do you think that’s not an exaggeration? That it only applies to a percentage of women? That men like shopping too? What would happen if women got annoyed and insulted every time? We don’t. We laugh. We know it’s just a joke. But these Barbie reactions have me expecting a lot less of people now. So I’m not kidding, THANK YOU. For just laughing and not taking everything personally. For hearing that heartfelt speech and saying “go off!” And just stopping there. You guys just restored some of my faith. 🙏👍😅😅😅

I had a similar experience with some male reactors who surprised me with the amount of defensiveness it triggered in them. I did read in a comment section on one that someone who also observed this noted how men over a certain age were more triggered by this movie than younger ones, since the older ones were raised in a time where it was more prevalent for men to identify with the patriarchy. Younger men were raised to see the patriarchy as a thing separate from themselves, allowing them the distance to enjoy the humor and social observations. Makes sense.
@fima79429 ай бұрын
Why do you feel upset that some reactors thought that the speech applied to everyone, not just women? It's true. They are allowed to have that opinion. Also the speech is way too dramatic.

Kinda sad that Zuff didn't get the movie at all. To me, it's about how society puts pressure on men and women to behave a certain way. I'd rewatch the scene where Gloria talks about how women are supposed to be. For men, they are supposed to be large and in charge. Masculine, never showing weakness or emotions. All of these concepts are harmful. The idea you should be one way based on your gender is ridiculous and unattainable. It also shows that how things were in the beginning isn't good. Barbies in charge and Kens an accessory or an afterthought. Patriarchy isn't the solution though. There needs to be balance.

Barbie just chooses to be and exist as human. Becoming more in theory, something people already are, but forget or dissociate from due to ... established patriarchal & gender structures. Overall telling us all to just be the humans we are, instead of all these restricting roles & constructs that don't generally benfit us anyway. Best Barbie reaction, hands down. I've seen a few, and as another commenter said, it's like a breath of fresh air to experience reactions without gender biases. The montage of women at the end had me and my bestie crying. This movie hit so hard. Not to give brownie points bc I know it should be the bare minimum, but it makes me happy when men get the movie (to the extent that they can). Several guys got up and left during the showing I went to. So many people think this movie is anti man or women>man, but the message is quite literally just “nobody should feel that their life is made meaningful by conforming to societal expectations of success or the way others perceive them: your life is meaningful because you give it meaning, you live it, and you put yourself into it.”
@mandipandi30310 ай бұрын
I highly recommend getting the Blu-ray. The special features are amazing. Depression Barbie watching the BBC Pride and Prejudice had me howling, because that's been my comfort media for decades. I love how this movie showed that patriarchy hurts men too. Society has taught men that it isn't okay to express vulnerability, and men are to gauge their value on messed up things. Ken represses his need to cry and express how he feels, as patriarchy has told him it's not okay to do so. He's also judging his self-worth based on his material possessions, his girlfriend, and how other men perceive him. The movie really tells men who watch it not to listen to those garbage expectations anymore than the women should bend to the garbage expectations society has for them.

I was also on the verge of tears during the scene with all the old home videos of young girls Just that... feeling of a shared experience and a childhood now passed I can't explain it, it just made me feel emotional and the fact that she chose human imperfection and death, over basically perfect apathy Also America Ferrera's speech about being a woman just hit so hard I also love that the ending was Barbie empowering Ken to find himself - not to be a "man" or below her or above her, but to be himself. And that Barbie also went to find herself, out in the human world. It also spoke to that middle school/preteen/teen shame that many of us had growing up which was that barbies were no longer cool or were 'too girly" or too childish - but dolls (all kinds, not just barbies) are for everyone, even if you don't continue playing with them past childhood, they still _mean_ something to you

I went to see this three times in theaters and I've literally never went back to a theater for repeat viewings of a movie before. The first time, I took my 90 year old grandma and we got to talk about the evolution of women's rights through her life. Plus, my grandma had a bin of Barbies that we'd play with and I recognized some of the clothing in the movie (like the dress/hair piece she wore at her house party). The second time, I went with my aunt and we talked about the experience of modern teens/young women (my cousins are 16 and 18). The third time, I went with my parents and I got to talk about feminism and the challenges of being a woman with my father which we've never done before. I saw it a fourth time as soon as it came out to purchase with my other grandparents. My 87 year old grandma has become a vocal feminist in her old age (she grew up in a "seen not heard" traditional/strict house) and it was incredible to have those conversations with her and hear about her own journey and struggles. I laughed and sobbed in all viewings. The energy in the theater every time was so special. So many people wore pink and/or dressed up very 90s/early 00s (when they played with Barbie). It just felt electric and emotional and fun. It was akin to the midnight premiere of Harry Potter or Hunger Games. From the conversations I heard, plenty of people in the theaters were coming back for a repeat viewing. The dude next to me was talking with his friend and it was his fourth time! It was an amazing movie and it's so sad that Margo Robbie didn't get nominated for an oscar while Ryan Gosling did. I hope he wins though and I hope one of the TWO songs nominated wins. The chances of Barbie beating Oppenheimer for best picture are slim to none but that would be amazing, too. Loved the reaction!

And we need a Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants reaction. It is more a summer movie but still good to watch year round.

That is Rhea Perlman who is or was married to Danny DeVito, she was on "Cheers". The real Ruth Handler died in 2002, I think.

I think they know it’s not the real Ruth Handler lol they were probably questioning if Ruth handler being the creator of Barbie was a real fact

Barbies in my family are handed down through the generations. I say that to say, I had the pregnant Barbie and thought she was so cool! I also had a couple of dream houses and the RV shown on their way leaving Barbieland! By the time my family Barbie’s got to me there were over 30 years of Barbie’s in A LOT of totes lol

I have been checking your page hoping for this movie reaction and I am so excited! I loved your reactions, your thoughts in the review and throughout those "sensitive topic" moments were spot-on. You get it, and I love you guys for that. I didn't know Bryce is a yoga instructor Ken - how cool!

To be fair, in the intro he said he played with Barbies as a child, not that he actually owned any.
