My grandpa had dementia and was with my grandma for 65 years. He didn’t remember any of his kids or myself. Towards the end I would sit with him at his house and play old music. I played “I’ll Be Seeing You”, and suddenly he started singing the words, the first time he’d shown any signs of memory. I recorded it and he passed days later. We played that song at his funeral.

The mom was trying to tell her to pick Noah bc she didn’t want Ally to marry a man for security like she did, here she is 25 years later still spying on the real love of her life
@thatgirlwearingglasses41332 ай бұрын
See I don’t see it exactly like that. I think the mom doesn’t regret the choice she made of marrying someone else. I think she just wonders what might’ve and could’ve been because of how much she loved that other man once upon a time. So at this point she is no longer trying to make the choice for her daughter, she’s just showing her that she understands her more than she (ally) ever knew and that she wants her to have all of the info befire she makes this big life decision and doesn’t look back wondering what might’ve been. This is why at the end of that scene she hands her all of the letters and tells her she hopes she makes the right choice but doesn’t say what she thinks that choice is.

Actually we find out in the 2nd book, The Wedding, that only Allie died and Noah moves to a retirement home where he goes to the pond on the property everyday to feed a swan that he believes is Allie's soul. The book is told from the point of view of one of Noah and Allie's son in laws. The house Noah built sat empty and in need of repair until the son in law fixed it up, but I won't tell you why. I don't want to spoil the ending.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the Notebook, but I thought the mom was telling Allie that she herself loved someone that her parents deemed below her and forced her to marry someone else. She would go back to see the man she first loved and thinks about a different life, a life that was forced on her that she realizes now she doesn’t want to force on her daughter. Not excusing her actions with the letters just an FYI!

Yes this is a classic and to explain the scene where Allie and her mom go to that place where the guys were working allie’s mom was in the exact same position as Allie where she loved a man who was poor and her parents were against it because of that and she later ended up meeting allie’s dad (Allie’s Lon) and married him because he was rich and could provide security so she basically chose a life with money over true love so the point she was trying to make was to not make the same Mistake she did

I remember watching this years ago. My story is too long to write in a KZbin comment, but I fell in love with a girl, and then got my heart broken. After the heartbreak, I literally couldn't even stand up straight for a few days because the pain in my heart was so bad heh. And then, for some reason, I watched The Notebook for the first time, and just bawled my eyes out. I've never watched it again, ha. But this movie really is a great love story. I think it is a retirement home. I don’t think it’s directly stated in the book or by Nicholas Sparks himself (may be wrong though), but my good guess is while they were looking for retirement homes to have her stay in long term they prob figured (maybe before she progressed a lot more) that the retirement home was a good one because of it resembling the home I would assume her and Noah lived in for majority of their lives together and raised their kids in. This way maybe living in a place that resembles most like home (white panels, wrap around balcony) will make remembering easier and how she puts it in the book, make it easier to “come back to Noah.” Really sad but shows the harsh reality of this disease.

I don't know if anybody said it yet, but at least from a female perspective what I got from the conversation with the mother is that... Ok,she said "I love your father", like, "I don't want you to think I don't"... but what she's saying is she never stopped loving this guy, but she made the safe choice, so she was basically saying, "maybe you'll be brave enough to make the choice that I didn't make". I don't know if that makes any sense. It was also her way of explaining why she acted the way she did; because she knew it was serious, *because* she'd been there. So while the dad was just blowing it off as summer love, no big, she was the one who knew how this could go, knew how real it was and what choice her daughter might make, because she had already done it herself, and at the time, when they were younger, she thought she had made the correct choice... but now she wonders, watching her daughter go through the same thing... She said she wondered what her life would be like if she had made the other choice; she wouldn't wonder if she was sure she had made the correct one, if that makes sense? So when she was saying, "I love your father and I do not deserve him", what she's saying is, "you'll probably feel the same way, I know you also love Lon, and you might feel like you don't deserve him, but that's not a reason to choose him; you've got to make whatever choice is right for *you*". Eventually she's saying the same thing as Noah did but in more words. And it comes different when it comes from the parent who's the same gender as you I think then it comes from a person who has more of a vested interest in it if I am making any sense. I don't know if that helps any.

I ADORED this film when I was 16. Now, I can recognize how utterly toxic almost all of it is. Him, pressuring her into a date, their whole almost violent, co-dependent relationship. red flags so big the UdSSR gets jealous, I mean..jeeeez! The only sweet bit is the commitment when they're old, the reading and the very end when they die in each others arms. And even that...slightly tinged because it may well be argued that he only does it for selfish reasons - because it clearly upsets her often and a lot mentally and him, physically.

I believe wat the mom was doing at the end there was trying to right her wrongs. She obvs feels bad about keeping those letters from her. I can’t imagine her being totally fine with that, especially knowing how sad her daughter was. I believe the scene at the end is her trying to redeem herself and her character and right the wrong (of her keeping those letters from her daughter) and inevitably keeping the love of her life away from her). At the time, she prob thought she was doing the right thing. Ensuring her daughter gets a good education, meets a man that will treat her good, keep her safe and secure, everything that Lon was and everything that does happen. I feel the mom sometimes thinks “what if I ended up with this man (not her husband, other guy.” What if I choose him. Would I be happier? What if I decided I want to live with him? She prob does not want her daughter to feel like that because she knows all too well how that feels. Al and Noah separated once before, clearly. The fact that they somehow rekindled everything years later symbolizes a) their deep love for each other and b) maybe this is the man Al was supposed to end up with. With Lon , yes she would have felt safe and secure. Heck she probably would have been happy. But that “what if’ would keep her from genuinely feeling completely content and fulfilled. Her mom knew this, and as a final gesture, basically tells Al to follow her heart this time (who was with Noah).

So I always took the mom part as her sort of regretting putting her daughter in a similar situation she was in where she had to make a decision like that where she may one day wonder what could have been. She just wanted to show her both sides and have her make the right decision for her since the mom didn't necessarily make the right decision when she was young. Also --- so sad but in the book only Allie dies at the end.

I also thought it’d be even more of a twist if Lon was Duke, and after Noah died at some point he left her a book of their love. After Ally’s dimentia kicked in, Lon promised to read it to her so she could remember not only the love from Noah, but who Lon is to her and how they came to be.
